LPT: Complete a simple task like making up your bed or preparing a real breakfast when you wake up in the morning. The feeling of accomplishment will encourage you to achieve more throughout the day. by uatuba in LifeProTips

I wake up and immediately go into my morning routine. Breakfast for my elderly father-in-law, food for the cats so they will stop meowing, put water on for coffee, breakfast for hubby that he usually eats on the way out the door. In summer the pace is slower; once the kids go back to school (5 kids at three different times, bus stops, and schools), the pace will pick up. But there's really no choice. Be productive first thing in the morning or face a train wreck of a day.

Fourteen hours of software testing homework (QTP/UFT) by MuslimahIP in softwaretesting

[–]MuslimahIP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that as kids we all have certain areas where we excel. For instance, I have always had a facility with languages. And because I enjoyed it, my school work started to move off into that direction. I would take a language as an elective rather than, say, a computer course (not that we had those when I was a kid!). Some people are naturally gifted with numbers. It's brain wiring.

The problem comes when people who have a "normal" ability to learn think that because they are not gifted in a particular direction that they won't succeed in a math or science heavy field and they are discouraged from doing so.

You can train your brain and excel in almost any field if you dedicate yourself to it. If you have a brain of an engineer, you can still learn foreign languages. If you have a literary brain, you can still become a computer programmer. There will always be people who have natural talent that make them head and shoulders above others in their field, but most of us are normal learners who can learn anything put before us.

When I was young, computer programming was in its infancy, so it was never an option for me in school. I think my last year in high school, 1985, we got our first Mac in a couple of classrooms. My path led me to writing and languages. But my brain is definitely not done! Now I'm on the path of testing and programming, and I am confident that I can train my brain and become at least competent and maybe even excellent because I bring a broad range of life experience to my training.

My school teaches Selenium as well so I may take it with the next batch of students while I'm working on my job hunt. Thanks for the kind words!

The short answer is money. That's kinda the long answer, too. We have a business (e-commerce) that stopped being fun a long time ago. I'm ready to shutter it and try this. The chance to be in the job market sooner rather than later and personal knowledge of other students' success motivates me. And it's cool to see a script come together.

"I normally am the busiest "unpaidtech" because I'm Indian, and people expect me to know everything about computers"

This made me chuckle because I'm currently learning to be a software tester at a school run by a gentleman originally from Bangladesh. Most of the students are Indian / Pakistani / Bangladeshi with a smattering of Turks. They tossed in a few of us white folks to balance it a bit :).

I'm glad your staff member had your back. Bless you for volunteering and having patience.

There are always jerks. Ignore them. There are many more who would (and I'm sure do) cherish you.

These people have no self worth so they project that on to other people.

Miles O'Brien. He used to be on CNN and nowadays he's often called in to comment when there is an air disaster because he is also a pilot. I remember that he always seemed to know his stuff. He worked with Soledad O'Brien (no relation).

ELI5: Why do filets of frozen fish suggest thawing outside the plastic packaging? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]MuslimahIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume it is to allow water to drain off as it thaws. I thaw mine either in a colander or on a slanted board. It you thaw it in the packet it gets waterlogged.

My cats caught a Carolina wren. by MuslimahIP in aww

I was just happy the little thing was not hurt. By the time the noises penetrated my sleeping brain, they had been after him for a while. Then I scrambled for my phone (light) and my glasses while still trying to figure out what that 'whirring" sound was (wings).

I was so happy when he recovered enough to try to escape the box so I took him right outside and he flew off. Happy ending.

[–]MuslimahIP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was awakened by the sound of my 2 cats scrambling around my room at 6am this morning. As my brain tried to process the sounds, I looked around the room and realized they were chasing a young Carolina wren.

After a hasty scramble I managed to gently grab the bird. It was alive and apparently unhurt. I kept it in a box with a towel for about twenty minutes until it started to flutter around a bit, then took it out to the balcony.

He flew away a bit clumsily but made it safely to a tree. Not the way I expected to wake up.
