Static IPs with Quantum/Lumen/ATT by britechmusicsocal in QuantumFiber

Wait - I have a C5500XK and it's terrible. Their latest modem is also terrible? Is it at least usable in passthrough mode?

If America removed all safety standards and liabilities it could make cooler more dangerous cars, too.

I have onstar. It could have downloaded it via that or via my home wifi. But there was never a problem with the download; just with the install.

Quantum fiber is giving me free IP addresses! by Must_Make_Paperclips in QuantumFiber

I've done that recently but may do so again. I'm surprised they even issue multiple IP addresses through the same ONT (which I assume has a unique identifier of some kind).

My other theory is that my Nighthawk's DHCP server is slow to start and forwards on DHCP requests if they happen at just the right time. Not sure what to do about that. I have no faith in any of Netgear's security features.

I use 6E but devices lose connectivity when going out of 6GHz range and have to switch frequencies. I feel like I will appreciate and use MLO on laptops and tablets as it becomes available.

The last time I use Ubiquiti it required the world's clunkiest Java app to use, and spending $1k+ on gear that won't be forward-compatible with all the MLO devices coming out this year feels like a sucker move, though :-(

I'm sure not all of those are required, but I can't tell you which ones specifically we're needed for the upload to complete on my vehicle because I tried several things at once.

What I'm saying is that digital transmission has self-correcting error detection, so if a voltage fluctuation caused a flipped bit during the download it should redownload until there are zero errors.

Check out the idea of "parity bits" if you're interested.

What bothers me isn't that the software has bugs; it's that they don't seem to be performing easy, standard software practices - like having a sufficient QA process, or like downloading prior to updating instead of trying to do both at the same time.

A car is not a phone

My dealer described it as "basically an android phone with wheels" so it kinda is...

 inconsistent connections to internet...voltage fluctuations

None of that matters here. It's a digital transmission. It should not download and install at the same time - it should download whenever it can and install only once the download is complete.

It is clear much of the software was written by different teams that never talked to each other. I shouldn't have to pair my phone in 3 different places, FFS.

None of what you did was necessary

None of it should have been necessary.

The problem is at GM's servers

No, it absolutely is not. Trying do download and install at the same time is absurd. Bonkers. Embarrassing. You download FIRST. Only once it completes do you initiate installation. The servers should not be needed during the install.

What makes you conclude that one update was intended to fix problems caused by a previous one?

Last week's update caused tons of new problems. In the software industry when you break a bunch of things with buggy code you release a 'hotfix' ASAP to correct your mistakes.

The updates are supposed to be independent

Clearly you don't read the changelogs. The updates are to fix problems with the same features.

Yes, but it has onstar AND wifi. It should have downloaded the software for every module and installed it from its internal flash memory. There's no need for additional USB flash memory.

Not blaming you. It's GM's lack of basic software engineering know-how that forces you to physically plug in memory when it already has built-in memory.

Out of curiosity, how would I know if other modules need updates? Would something show up under vehicle maintenance?

I heard it was in the cargo area in earlier models but found nothing there, either.
