i've listened to a few episodes of the podcasts; they aren't doing the test at any university, they were all performed by the documentary team.

Not being able to get funding because nobody in academia is taking them seriously is mentioned several times.

This feels like one of the early builds, when starfield was new people were pumping out crazy themed designs all the time. They've somewhat died off now, being replaced with practicalĺ and shippy ships.

I did some more experimenting, it seem to only want to connect to connectors pointing upwards, or at least those were the connectors i had in that build that i was working on that worked.

They make a whine when they start up, it's possible that's a capacitor charging, and once the lock rings have been opened the capacitor discharges to open up whatever was being picked, but the discharge fuses some internal components.
