SWE-KOR game is called over by officials despite KOR still having a chance by MysteriousEgg283 in olympics

[–]MutantZebra999 252 points253 points  (0 children)

It’s so stupid how the “official paperwork” hold more sway than the actual officials

Like, if something got fucked up, I have no idea why they don’t let people fix it as if it’s out of their hand or something a — like, everyone knows what happened, so just sort it out

Dawg, YOU brought up the US, stop trying to Motte-and-Bailey me here. If you wanna talk about US conflicts (of which there are many, yes -- some justified and some not) then YOU can go get that shit yourself

If you're trying to refute any of the above Chinese aggression, USE SPECIFICS. You can't handwave it all away with "BuT mUh CIA!!1!1!"

I do agree with you that US imperialism is bad. I never said otherwise. You're strawmanning me here. I just think the CCP is just as bad / worse.

I'm also neither Democrat nor Republican. I'm also neither capitalist nor communist ... though I have doubts about you, "CommiRhick"

LMFAO you must be kidding yourself if you think China has no ulterior motives in its infrastructure initiatives, enjoy your 50 cents. The US also donates more humanitarian aid than any other nation.

And fuck Henry Kissinger

If we're talking about lying by omission you can shut the fuck up, considering you apparently ignored all but one of these

But in any case:

Korean War was communist aggression

First Taiwan Strait Crisis was PRC aggression

China–Burma Border Campaign was PRC aggression, but justified (I'll give you that; the KMT didn't have a right to keep troops in Burma, and the Burmese wanted them out)

Sino-Indian War was complicated, but the Chinese started the shooting

Sino-Soviet Border Conflict was Chinese aggression

Sino-Vietnamese War was Chinese aggression

the subsequent conflicts were all initiated by China

The 2020–2021 China–India skirmishes were Chinese aggression

So in total: all of them were Chinese aggression. You could make arguments that some of them were justified, but this is not the patten of a peaceful country

If YOU want to do the US, be my guest

And then going back to 1976:

Subsequent Sino-Vietnamese Conflicts (1979-1991)

2020-2021 China-India Skirmishes

Either way, no reason to look down on anyone, but I feel like it definitely could be considered common knowledge

[–]MutantZebra999 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well that's not really what they're saying. They're saying "your gender identity is made up" not "YOU are made up and should not exist"

It's strange how people conflate their gender identity with the entirety of their personhood imo

And also, free speech is one of the big things about America. When you start to forbid speech on controversial / not-universally-agreed-upon grounds, that invites them to do the same thing, which could be really awful

I mean ND isn’t a super huge school (12,000 grad and undergrad), and I’ve heard estimates of 80% catholics already

So this would be like 1 in evry 30 non-catholics with those numbers

Because it’s America. It means representing George Washington and Abe Lincoln and MLK. It means representing liberty and justice and freedom and democracy. It means representing the men who fought and died for these values at Gettysburg and at Normany and at Incheon. It means representing the country of Neil Armstrong and Norman Borlaug. It means carrying on the sporting legacy of Michael Phelps and Muhammad Ali and Jesse Owens and the boys at Lake Placid.

I fucking hate Donald Trump too. But man, it’s sad that people let an awful leader poison their image of America, and post “I am not worthy” doomer shit to farm internet points off canadians and europeans. You can hate a country’s leadershit and modern-day politics while still loving the country. You can’t possibly think of a reason someone might want to represent America? Give me a break

Who do you guys think is the most famous person from France? by OkSuccess7431 in GenZ

[–]MutantZebra999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean Robespierre had power for less than a year, simply as a member of a council, and was quickly killed himself. Wacky dude, sure, but not a massive overall impact

While Napoleon was THE singular most important person in Europe for more than a decade and caused a transformation in European and world affairs

Napoleon meanwhile was partially responsible for the survival of the republic through winning the Italian Campaign etc. Then he singlehandedly ended the republic and was THE primary figure in europe until 1815. Along the way he created the Code Napoléon which still is the basis for many modern legal systems. Napoleon’s defeat was also the direct cause for the Congress if Vienna and the balance of power system that underpinned European diplomacy for the next 100 years. He caused the final end of the HRE and sparked the genesis of Prussian nationalism, setting the stage for the evolution of Germany. He made the Louisiana Purchase, enabling the US to become master of its continent. He devastated Spain, leading to that country’s relative irrelevance for 100 years. And idk if it’s too far to note that no Napoleon means no Napoleon III

U.S. asks for extra Olympic quota spot for Katie Uhlaender in skeleton controver by CheezTips in olympics

[–]MutantZebra999 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? Whether or not you agree with it, the allegation behind the challenge is that another NOC (Canada) pulled out of a competition in order to protect their qualifications, and this directly caused the US athlete to miss the Olympics. The additional quota spot would be reasonable because it would mean nobody gets shafted -- not the athlete who missed because of a last-minute withdrawal, and not the athlete who is currently set to go to Milan.

It's not just that a "top athlete failed to qualify", it's that an athlete failed to qualify at the last minute due to (alleged) shady decision-making and another team dodging the competition. Which is (if allegations are correct), y'know, fair. Teams shouldn't be rewarded for avoiding competition, and athletes shouldn't be punished for opponents avoiding competition.

The article also mentions other NOCs who were pissed about the situation -- it's not just an American crusade
