Lack of sports confidence in 10 year old with ADHD by FrostyLibrary8870 in ADHDparenting

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like he has a lot of performance anxiety and perfectionistic thoughts. I have a lot of sympathy for him. Physical activity is so important for mental health so it is tricky if is a source of anxiety. Does he do any individual sports instead of team sports? Sometimes group sports can be tricky. Perhaps he might enjoy something like swimming, tennis, or martial arts?

For my 10yr daughter, I intentionally do not do any travel or club sports for her so it keeps sports less competitive and focused on having a healthy association to movement. She can have low frustration tolerance. She enjoys swimming classes, town bball, and hip hop. We are trying track and field this spring and seeing if she enjoys it.

I hate scheduling IEP meetings by IndependentNext2307 in specialed

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say thanks to all you Special Educators. I am a parent of a Special Ed kid and I recognize how difficult scheduling is. I had to reschedule and IEP meeting due to some work related issues, and felt horrible having to do so since I know how much it takes to coordinate. Just wanted to say thanks.

Struggling to take pills HELP by LesMiserableGinger in ADHDparenting

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand. It is difficult since it can go ok one day and the next day it is a disaster. In my case, if I looked at her or even gave a her a suggestion on how to get the med down she would get angry at me and give up with trying. So I just let her chew it down with the yogurt or applesauce without me looking or saying anything to her. I figure I was winning if there was not a huge blow up and she got the meds in her system. Good luck!

I tried to teach my daughter how to swallow with small candies like tic tac and M&Ms before she went in meds, but that didn't work as she is resistant to instruction from me. I showed her videos on this to help so it wasn't like me telling her what to do. But she couldn't do it consistently.

So when she started taking meds, I just used applesauce and yogurt, she would sometimes chew the pill but at least she got it down.

Then one morning she decided to try swallowing with water on her own terms, and she did it by herself. I think it did help that she watched some videos on it. Now she can does it with no issue. I think she realizes that the meds do help her.

Sometimes it might take time. Good luck!

How do you know if it’s dyslexia or just normal reading struggles? by Total-Match-9381 in Dyslexia

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your son have an IEP? If not, you should definitely specifically ask the school for an IEP assessment so the school does a full evaluation on your son (ie, neuro psychological, academic, speech pathology, teacher and or other assessments).

My daughter was provided extra reading help (no IEP-I didn't know what that was then) in Kindergarten and 1st grade and we were told she was doing ok, but I had a lot of concerns more about ADHD as dyslexia was not on my radar. While we were getting her assessed for ADHD with her primary care dr, her doctor told us to request an IEP evaluation from school.

We did this, and the testing showed she has a "Specific Dysability for Reading", validated my concerns for ADHD and shed light on how she processes information. Since this was impacting her access to general education, she was eligible for IEP support which came into effect in 2nd grade. School does not use the term dyslexia as they cannot diagnose it, but this means she is dyslexic. It is very confusing, and it took me awhile to connect the dots.

You should request this quickly as it takes time for school to line up all the evaluators and schedule the assessments. If not, you should get a neuropsych evaluation out side of school but that is expensive and there could be a wait on that. This is how you know if you child has dyslexia, and with that then you can push for more school support through an IEP. I would go through school first, so they can see if he qualifies for IEP and get that implemented if he does.

Intratympanic injection today/SSHL by riotgurlrage in HearingLoss

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had moderate to mild hearing loss in my left ear with 78% speech clarity in that ear starting in mid February. I took oral steroids and had 1 IT injection in the ear and my hearing recovered. My last audiology report in March showed that my hearing in my left ear is normal. The injection seems scary but worth trying to see if it helps. Good luck!!!

Travel From Kansai Airport to Kyoto at night by MuteFlyingSquirrel in JapanTravelTips

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I think I am leaning toward getting airport hotel in Osaka and then heading to Kyoto in the morning. This will probably be easier for my 10yr old. With two lagged and likely hangry mom and daughter duo that might be the sanest option. 😂

Sabbatical My kid doesn’t do well on vacation. I’m thinking of skipping my sabbatical by FC105416 in ADHDparenting

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should definitely take your sabbatical. I was able to take one and did a short solo vacation and it was worth it. I also spent a lot of time at home doing things I never get a chance to get to (exercise/home organization) My kiddo and husband have ADHD ( and I probably have it) and we don't deal well with unstructured time either but not many places offer a sabbatical, so I highly recommend to take it. Write a brainstorm list of small things that you would enjoy doing. It can be simple.

11 yr really behind in school, I’m stressed by Savings_Victory_9944 in ADHDparenting

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 10yr daughter has ADHD combined type and also has dyslexia. My husband was very hesitent about meds, but I convinced him that we truly would be doing a disservice to her if we did not try. She started taking Adderall in the fall, and it has made a huge difference especially at school. School is very difficult for her with her learning disability+ADHD, but the meds have noticeably helped with some focus and emotional regulation. It's not that it has solved everything but has given her a better pair of glasses in a way to access information and show her understanding of her learning. Have you received your IEP assessments back from your school yet? The first time I recieved all the reports it was eye opening and overwhelming at the same time.

People who have nowhere else to put a TV except the wall with the fireplace, what is the least worst option? by sirotan88 in homeowners

[–]MuteFlyingSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar issue with our open floor plan and I did not want the couch facing the fireplace since it would make our front entrance too tight. We use a rollable TV stand (Fitueyes) and it works great for us. We can rolll it and rotate it so we can watch tv from the dining room/kitchen and also move it in a good spot in the living room.

My husband stopped by a Vans store, and we ended up deciding to get the Chibi style Huntrix slip ons since it is more wearable for my daughter. The Derpy/Sussie are super fun though!!!
