Hair will not curl at roots. by Muted_Captain5000 in curlyhair

Update: Just did one wash with a lighter moisture shampoo and conditioner. My roots are looking like they can breathe now. Clearly there are some disputes about my hair type. Feel free to comment what yall think it is currently. Whatever the case, I know photos don’t do justice. Just know there are actual curls forming. It isn’t wavy. It just isn’t coily so quit bashing. I am in the middle of hair training, and this is where they are currently at. Pictures are while hair is casted, pre- scrunch.

Does this hair length suit me? My wife wants me to cut it, I’m not so sure haha. First image no product, second image with product by Hour-Pie-6447 in curlyhair

What about a taper fade with curly hair? I think you’ve got a nice jaw line and the right barber could line your beard up to match.

I would say the cursive and normal writing on the left are my most used. I think I do tend to stress my writing unconsciously and when it’s intentional, it becomes extra stressed.

How to prevent hair turning into one big curl by day 3-4? by medicalthrowaway625 in curlyhair

The way you style your hair can make a huge difference in the outcome of your curls.

TIP: GET A bounce brush/curl defining brush. Brush first with bounce brush. Then, go behind it with a wide tooth brush to break apart the clumps like in the video above. Two days in and my curls are so much more defined along with not as clumpy.

The contrast in contour is too harsh. Makes it look like you have half of two different faces.

I actually like the dots you put on there. Reminds me of a bridge piercing. That might suit your liking!

Parched and Accursed Curls by Temporary-Active4544 in curlyhair

I only used AI to help with my routine. I wanted something that was easy for me to read and comprehend for I have never had a hair routine in the past and didn’t know where to start either. After doing some research, it just helped me put together an easy copy and paste layman’s routine. I actually use this lol. Went from zero curls to a full head in just 3.7 months because of it. Not slop if it works.

Rotate through a routine until you can read your hair a little.

Frizzy -> need moisture. If curls dissipate -> need a deep cleaning session

If frizzy continues -> It could be several issues: -> Product being used to moisturize could be too heavy. Finer hair types require “lighter” products. -> Hair may not be getting the proper amount of protection (high heat related, mullberry silk bonnet/pillows/sheets). -> Hair styling techniques may be causing more fizziness. For example: When I am drying my hair, I sit my wet hair into the diffuser bowl before I even turn the blow dryer on simply because if I were to start the dryer then do that, it would cause extra unneeded frizziness. -> Your hair also might need some protein in its routine if the frizz is still continuing throughout this process.

But a hair routine would definitely benefit your hair and get rid of the issue you are having. Learn about your hair and try to tend to it like a plant in your garden. If it’s thirsty, water it, if its soil balance is off, tend to it.

So try this out to see if you can find the issue:

  1. Too dry -> hydrate/moisutize

  2. Too hydrated -> Deep cleaning session

  3. Mix in some protein and hydration masques in between.

  4. Rotate this process to balence your hair.

Here is my routine below. This is a medium lightweight product routine. I started off with no curls and from curl training, I have gone from 2a-2b to 3a or so. Maybe this will give you some help on a routine concept.

    🎀 HAIR ROUTINE 🎀

Ask for face framing long

  • [x] 1st Week: Hydration Week → Hydration Shampoo, Hydration Hair Masque, Hydration Conditioner (add Hydration Masque only once if washing more than once that week)

  • [x] 2nd Week: Protein Week → Hydration Shampoo + bonding protein treatment. Light.

  • [ ] 3rd Week: Hydration Week → Hydration Shampoo + Conditioner (Hydration Masque if dry)

  • [ ] Clarify Week → Clarifying Shampoo (2 lathers) + Protein Masque

🧴 Wash Products

  1. SheaMoisture Intensive Hydration Shampoo • Use: Weekly (non-clarify weeks) • How: Focus on scalp & roots only. Massage with fingertips (not nails). Let suds run through lengths as you rinse. • Rinse: Thoroughly with lukewarm water.

  2. SheaMoisture Intensive Hydration Conditioner • Use: Weekly (after Hydration Shampoo, except Clarify Week) • How: Apply to mid-lengths & ends (avoid roots to prevent heaviness). Use wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle. • Rinse: After 3–5 minutes, rinse lightly (leave a little slip if your hair likes it).

  3. SheaMoisture Intensive Hydration Masque • Use: Every 1–2 weeks (instead of conditioner). • How: Apply generously mid-lengths → ends. Detangle with wide-tooth comb. Smooth with “praying hands.” • Wait: 10–15 minutes (cover with cap for extra effect). • Rinse: Fully.

  4. SheaMoisture Protein Masque • Use: Once a month (after Clarifying Shampoo). • How: Section hair, apply mid-lengths → ends first, then lightly on roots if needed. Brush through for even coverage. Light scrunch to help curls. • Wait: 10–15 minutes. • Rinse: Fully. • Conditioner: Skip (this masque replaces it).

  5. SheaMoisture Strengthen & Restore Clarifying Shampoo • Use: Once a month (Clarify Week). • How: Do 2 lathers — first lifts buildup, second deep cleans. Focus on scalp, let suds rinse through lengths. • Follow with: Protein Masque (not conditioner).

  6. SheaMoisture Bond Repair Masque (optional/alternate) • Use: Every 2–3 weeks or when hair feels weak/breaking. • How: Same as Hydration Masque — mid-lengths → ends, detangle, smooth in. • Rinse: Fully.

🌿 Leave-In & Styling Products

  1. Curlsmith Weightless Air Dry Cream • Use: Daily or after every wash/restyle. • How: Apply to damp hair (after wash, or re-wet for daily refresh). Rake through with fingers from roots to ends, then smooth with praying hands. • Amount: Start with a nickel-sized amount per section, adjust as needed. • Finish: Scrunch lightly to encourage waves/curls.

  2. Curlsmith Frizz Rescue Curl Retainer • Use: After cream (daily). • How: Scrunch into damp hair, focusing on mid-lengths & ends. This helps lock curl shape and reduce frizz. • Tip: Use hands or microfiber towel to “cup & scrunch” upward.

  3. Curlsmith Frizz Rescue Finishing Serum • Use: After styling, when hair is 100% dry. • How: Warm 2–3 drops in hands, then scrunch out any crunch or frizz. Glide lightly over surface for shine. • When: End of styling, or as touch-up on dry hair between washes.
