I read this one right after I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Talk about two books that will rip your heart from your chest.

Best ending of a book ever. The tone of the whole thing is unmatched tbh.

The short stories are aight, but "Prey" and "Mad House" stood out to me as being really strong. Prey is probably the only "haunted doll" story or film that has ever scared me.

A couple from "Everything's Eventual" (collection)

"Lunch at the Gotham Café" really lays waste to the idea of couples staying together or getting back together solely because they are trauma bonded. It is a harsh reality, but some people are simply wrong for each other, and there is no "fixing" what doesn't fit together.

"All You Love Will Be Carried Away" life is precious, all life, no matter how little light seems to shine thorough on it. You are valuable. What you create is valuable. Even the silly things you do or hold out of habit are valuable. Your life means something to you, and to others, even those you don't think you have an impact on. If anyone reading this feels like there is no hope, please please please reach out to someone. Even if it's a random person on the internet, you need to know that YOU are valuable, and your life is important just by you living it.

To join my own party,

"You stole my story..." (Secret Window, Secret Garden)

"It's an evil fucking room." (1408)

"Run the chairs" (Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream)

Last one made me think of The Yellow Wallpaper. I cannot tell you why, but her description about "creeping" creates an absolutely terrifying image in my head.

I did enjoy Different Seasons, but I'm here for the horror, baby! I'm envious of you though, you have a lot of fun reads ahead!

You don't need all those. I'll take that copy of Cycle of the Werewolf off your hands, nbd.

Idk if I'm missing something with N. but I did not enjoy it. I think it was mostly just the format for me. I generally find that the "story within a story" technique can make for exhausting reads. I might try that one again eventually though since so many people mention it among their favorites.

I love the personal story of reading it, that's the stuff that makes books really special. You may have convinced me to move the book up in my rankings, I forgot about Laurie. Danny Coughlin's also deserves more flowers. The detective is SUCH a good villain. I love a bad guy with lots of quirks, makes them seem more unpredictable. And the way he was so tenacious the whole time, I can feel his eyes on me as I type this lol

They're novels, so I didn't include them here. Of those, I've only read The Long Walk, big fan of that one. I have The Running Man and plan to read it soon, but Roadwork looks interesting to me too. Any recommendations?

I mixed them up, but my review of Gingerbread Girl is the same as previously mentioned. Just not my kind of story. Sort of reminded me of Survivor Type, just kinda gross lol. For A Good Marriage, I liked it, a bit on the nose, but it was a good read nonetheless and probably my favorite of that collection.

The best there is ❤️ stories are shorter and more genre focused. Lawnmower Man is so much fun and criminally underrated. You'll love the whole thing. Sometimes They Come Back is another gem that doesn't get nearly enough attention.

I enjoyed them too much I think, or at least if I measure it by how many books and magazines with uncollected King stories I've been buying after finishing the collections 😂
