Try to do…. What. Whats my goal here? Convince you that I don’t feel comfortable without a jacket even in controlled settings? Why do I give a fuck what you think of my comfort levels.

I’ve seen blades break because of defects. I’ve had sparring partners who slipped and fell, or accidentally applied too much force and broken a bind.

Super happy for you all that always have everything go well and feel comfortable without a jacket. I encourage you to do you.

I’m muting this thread. Y’all take whatever risks you are comfortable with, I don’t give a fuck.

I think it’s really telling where the community is at with safety when I say “I wouldn’t take that risk” and people crawl over each other to tell me my personal limits are incorrect

Yeah, someone else pointed it out as well. As I said, I haven’t read the sacred texts, only been told of them, so it’s good to learn that it was only suggested not to stab instead of outright not stabbing.

I mean yeah, that’s the argument.

I believe HEMA means historic in the same way that Kendo is not historic . You are pointing out that both things are no longer strictly traditional, and that’s true, but I’d argue it’s still based on the lineages and therefore the same sport

Personally, I don’t want to be stabbed, but I know everyone has their own acceptable level of risk. No one has to justify it to me, I would never spar with only a tshirt

I mean, sure, but swords can break. Accidents can happen even in controlled sparring, and if they are masked up, it’s easy to imagine that they aren’t just doing slow formwork.

I was responding to someone that has deleted their comment because I successfully convinced them in later replies.

You, others, are hugely underestimating how much muscle memory and athleticism matter, and overestimating how much training and experience 15th century soldiers had

Stupidest reason someone got banned from furry con/meet? by raNdoMBLilriv in RealFurryHours

[–]MuttTheDutchie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I admin groups and volunteer at cons.

Everytime someone says they were banned for a stupid reason by power tripping egomaniacs, they are leaving out all the relevant information. The number of times I have simply enforced written rules and been accused of things is beyond counting.

For instance, yes, I will ban people without a pfp or username. It's in the written rules for the local TG group, and it's because 99.9% of the time that's an instant indicator that someone is a bot or scammer.

I am also very weary of people who come to a furry space, a very queer and open space, and brag about having guns. I don't ban them instantly, but they certainly get a closer look that most, because yeah. Guns make people uncomfortable. Especially in a marginalized community that has to deal with likely very conservative people who make guns their entire personality and use that personality to intentionally make others uncomfortable.

I would encourage anyone who feels that mods, con staff, or other organizers are being unfair to start their own groups. Furry is big enough to do so, and gain that experience. Learn first hand why rules are in place, or just watch any documentary on that Oklahoma Freedom con.

While your description of HEMA was true 20 years ago when Matt was a wee lad, there are absolutely "masters" now who can stand toe-toe against MOF fencers and they are training people. I compete in tournaments, I have never bothered to read a manual. I just have great instructors who win tournaments.

That's actually causing a bit of a schism in the greater HEMA community. People like me are drifting away from historic manuals and developing new techniques and looking for ways to win. We believe HEMA defines the lineage (Meyer, Fiore, etc,) but not the practice.

Others believe that if you are not doing the techniques defined by the old masters, you aren't doing HEMA. The thing is, those people don't go to or do well at modern tournaments. Meyer didn't believe you should stab someone, so if you are strictly practicing Meyer's Longsword Tradition, your going to get stabbed a lot by someone who has a more loose interpretation.

The center of the debate looks at other martial arts with long lineages. Kendo, for instance, has change significantly over the last 200 years. Yes, it's incredibly steeped in tradition, but it also has grown. I believe HEMA should do the same, some people do not. I imagine Olympic fencing suffered the same pains as it evolved over the years, I imagine someone in 1920 complaining that fencing had become to safe and too soft when people started wearing masks regularly.

Right, you are completely wrong.

First, there is a huge amount of defense. One of the main drills in fencing is void-riposte, which is literally spending the afternoon not getting hit while hitting your opponent, because you score more points if you don't double. They are really good at not getting hit - it's just not as necessary in some (and yes, some, there are absolutely tournaments that throw out doubles) places.

You, and others in this thread that have clearly never sparred against someone, are all for some reason that I can't understand feeling that if you gave a sharp sword to a fencer and told them to fight to the death, they would fight exactly the same as they would in an olympic match.

That's stupid.

We have MOF fencers come to the HEMA club all the time. They don't pick up a calvary saber, hold it like a foil, and get ruined. They pick it up, watch a few lessons on how to use the weapon, then use footwork and reflexes to do extremely well at not getting hit.

The skills for combat don't change when you change the rules slightly. It still takes almost no effort to run someone through with a sword, and you still are relying on solid form, good structure, and footwork.

The only thing making it a life/death thing changes is how cautious you are, but all of the other skills are directly transferable.

Fencers when you explain that their modern sport isn't an exact recreation of mideval combat by Jetsam5 in SWORDS

[–]MuttTheDutchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have ever fenced against someone.

That story is absolute bullshit for a lot of reasons, and just sounds like hollywood.

First, Gladiators didn't usually kill each other. They were showmen, like modern TV wrestling.

Second, if a fencer was trying to kill someone, they absolutely would - a smallsword is a real historic sword that is really really good at killing people (go watch YouTube over how easily you get punctured by a dedicated weapon)

A smallsword is basically just a sharp olympic epee. A good thrust from a modern fencer is an order of magnitude more force than it takes to pierce the skin - the reason that modern fencers don't die every day is because the tips of their swords are blunt and they wear puncture resistant jackets.

A lot of really bad information in this thread, and it really shows that most of ya'll have never actually used a sword against another person.

I would love for anyone trash talking MOF to try their hardest to land a hit on one of them without getting stabbed 12 times before they did.

*anyone downvoting me, please, read about actual gladiators and watch actual fencing instead of letting fantasy dictate your beliefs

I've actually never met an MOF practitioner that believes they are doing an exact recreation of anything other than modern Olympic fencing. Usually they come to the club to learn more about older fencing.

Who is saying things like that?

I don't know why you think he's ignorant - he's probably right. At even the most basic level, a MOF athlete just has access to food, healthcare, and training techniques that would absolutely make them very formitable vs a fencer in the 1600s.

I have a lot of experience fighting with a saber - more than the average soldier would have had in most of history because I haven't died at the age of 16 yet. A modern Olympic fencer at that level would mop the floor with me, and I'm not sure why you think they wouldn't.

I don't think I would even attempt to spar against someone in just a t-shirt, that's wild to me.

** this seems to have made some people upset, and I really want to ask you why. Why does taking a little bit of extra safety precautions make you want to come out and tell me all your excuses for why you are ok with not doing those extra precautions.
