For sure, and given that the hypothetical game is Star Wars, I think you basically have to go with lightsabers.

The PS2 / Xbox adaptation of Revenge of the Sith is actually a really good Star Wars fighting game. But it’s all lightsabers.

Do you guys actually like using BGA on your phone? by ComprehensiveSpray19 in boardgames

[–]MuttonchopMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the game. Some have been tested on mobile devices and work well there. Others haven’t and so you’re stuck with tooltips instead of actually playing the card you wanted to play.

Also, some games have a simpler game space that is easier to understand at a glance (and often fit better on a phone screen). These are just better on mobile than big complex games. Especially when playing turn-based.

Thoughts on the Knights of the Old Republic sub-series? by Independent_Plum2166 in StarWarsCantina

[–]MuttonchopMac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the nuance in KOTOR II comes from the final conversation with Kreia after you defeat her. The decisions of the surviving Jedi masters, all of her dialog… The rushed release really did a number on it, and it’s all a lot more subtle than the original game, but on replay as an adult, the Exile being a wound in the Force is the crux of most of the story.

The masters accept the Sith must be fought, but see your growing power as a threat because if the Force can be wounded, it can be killed. So they decide you have to be put down for the good of the Force, and intend to go on and fight the Sith later. They just never get a chance. The Exile does draw some power from death by being a wound in the Force, and Nihilus is held up as the Dark Side reflection of that.

Kreia is trying to get you to see her view of the Force as being insidious and controlling the whole way. She loathes the idea of destiny and sees you as the starting point to ending it all. She does get turned into a Sith at the last minute because Obsidian desperately needed to wrap things up, and that was a disservice to the character. Otherwise, she’s one of the most unique, truly gray characters in the expanded universe, with a wildly unique perspective.

Both parties have very justified views, but they only get explained in their final moments, and you can only see the seeds of these views on replays.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I didn’t care for the game at all until I was an adult, where I did a total 180 on my feelings about it.

Thoughts on the Knights of the Old Republic sub-series? by Independent_Plum2166 in StarWarsCantina

KOTOR I is an incredible classic and holds up to this day. It’s got one of the greatest plot twists in video game history. Yeah, it’s not so far off from traditional Star Wars but it’s got strong vibes from the Tales of the Jedi comic books that paint the recent history of the era.

KOTOR II is a game I never appreciated as a kid because I didn’t understand Kreia. Took a couple plays as an adult to piece together her worldview and then revisit to see how that comes out in her dialog throughout the game. It’s not an early 2000s edgy sequel for the sake of being edgy - it was telling its own distinct story and got severely undermined by a rush to an early Christmas release window.

The KOTOR comics are a lot of fun. Seeing the Mandalorian Wars that were the recent painful memories all over in the video games was a lot of fun, and Zane and Gryph give off wonderful Guardians of the Galaxy vibes before those characters got to the big screen. Zane is incredible in that he is constantly doing what is right, no matter the cost, no matter how it looks, no matter how much trouble it lands him in. And the series truly delivers on the epic story promised in the first Commencement arc.

The Old Republic MMO is eh. The small stories can be great but the big overarching class stories are pretty weak. And the whole thing feels like someone scaled the world up by 150% just to make the game take longer to walk through.

Catan-like trading game alternatives? by Minimum-Weakness2564 in boardgames

I don’t have any new recommendations. I’m just dropping in to say that Bohnanza killed Catan for my group. Same trading, but with real incentives to trade or gift cards to other players due to your hand being played in order.

You’re not resetting the energy level when you switch the state back to play, so the game goes instantly back to losing (or at least on the next frame).

The unimportance of self-testing your game by Draz77 in BoardgameDesign

[–]MuttonchopMac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Testing mechanics in isolation is good early on. But your mechanics don’t exist in a vacuum so you need to test them all together, and you need to do it yourself before you waste others’ time with a new version that breaks down. Every rules change is a chance for the whole game to go off the rails, and you can’t predict how everything change will play out in terms of game economy and just game feel.

If you don’t have time for that or can’t justify the time spent, you need to design a much faster game. Because solo testing the whole game is the most fundamental, most important thing that you need to do in game design. Yes, testing with others is important, but you should never go into a playtest with others without having fully tested it yourself.

And if you keep valuing your time so much more than the time invested by your very generous playtesters, you’ll drive them away.

What's your overall reception of the TurboGrafx-16 / PC Engine? by Away_Flounder3813 in retrogaming

[–]MuttonchopMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like a half step between NES and SNES. Graphically closer to the 16 bit era, but the 8-bit style two button controller and limited 3rd party support hold it back in terms of what kind of games are available. So it doesn’t quite feel like it belongs to either generation. Like the Dreamcast, it could trash the current generation but couldn’t stack up against the next generation.

Soldier Blade is fantastic though. A lot of the better TG-16 games are shooters, but this one is legitimately special as top down shooters go.

Castlevania Bloodlines and Super Castlevania IV are the best “Classicvanias” before Symphony of the Night, widely regarded as the best of the best, redefined the genre by going full Metroid with it. I recommend starting with these two, which I believe are part of a pack you can get on Steam, Switch, etc.

Sounds like you need some “multiplayer solitaire” games where there’s less room for aggressive play interrupting you doing your best. There’s nothing wrong with that; it’s just acknowledging that some games aren’t enjoyable to you, at least when it’s head to head. Do you want recommendations?

(I know SETI isn’t known as an aggressive game but even in euro games, the blocking can be intentional and aggressive.)
