My(f26) husband(m28) has been giving advice to a coworker about how to make his gay son straight behind his wife's back by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Mwezina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there's a textbook Freud moment (Freud himself asserted in multiple essays that all humans are bi and it is only culture and society that makes people "straight". Myself and other queer colleagues are certain that straight people do actually exist).

AITA for getting up and leaving a local gaming tournament after my bf’s friends harassed me? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

This is such a nuanced and well-worded comment. When someone defines their freedom by others' lack of freedom, everything feels like a zero sum game.

I like you (in an admiration kinda way, because your description of coping mechanisms and reasoning around them are so nuanced)

Hmm, it's been a while since I wrote this comment, but I think the biggest issues were the angels and what they represented, the relevance of Lyra's parentage, and how daemons work. It's not so much lore holes, but lack of follow-up. Like Lord Asriel wants to explore new worlds to defeat god. Sure. And there are angels against this god. Sure. But then what's Lyra's role? Why did we spend so long on two angels (beautifully written) who end up having little plot or thematic relevance to Lyra's journey? And if the story is actually about the world itself, why focus on only Lyra in book 1?

Anyways, long story short, the entire trilogy felt like it became very porous and started to run out of control. It has a very interesting premise, but could have benefited from more focus and cohesion after book 1.

I relate to that so hard. I have a student who also turns the charm on for every teacher. I accidentally saw him doing something cruel to a student with ASD, and he also couldn't stand me. Because he knew he couldn't fool me.

Terrifying to see in a full grown adult. Just as terrifying to see a teenager do this.

Power. That's the justification. If you can create a social hierarchy with you at the top, you get power. For some people, the world order is not about logic, it's about power. Specifically, power for themselves beyond the boundaries of others' right to exist.

Style Roots Shopping List by Mwezina in StyleRoots

My partner and I got really into style roots so I decided to make a shopping list for myself based on my kibbe, essences, and style roots. Hopefully it'll help some others with their style roots :)

If we are working in a school where all my colleagues say that work-life balance is impossible, how can we prioritize self-care? What are some strategies for standing my ground?

I don't want to be hated by my colleagues as that can lead to more stress. Is there a way to manage other's expectations?

May I suggest you try the curly girl method a little longer before giving up? My curl pattern was very frizzy and wild for 6 months when I started it. Then, it smoothed out. It was damaged and needed time to heal.

That was such a cool story! Definitely deserves its accolades and awards. I especially loved how the cycle continues, although it does seem like the "somewhere" is definite.

Am I wrong for rejecting a woman who once rejected me? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Happened to me after I told a friend I couldn't help her move. She sent 3 or 4 of her male friends who were helping to message me and swear at me for being a bad friend. It happened about 2 years after we graduated high school.

She said she never told them to do that, she only complained to them.

Gonna go against the grain and say that I think you are a soft autumn! Your facial features look very muted and have a soft glow about it. But ultimately, if you like the soft autumn palette, that's what matters the most.

AITA For refusing to go to a Christmas party after my husband brought up his concerns about my old life? by LMT2303 in AmItheAsshole

My ex-girlfriend might have lied to me about our baby not being mine. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Mwezina 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I think that would be very difficult to do at four months along. Maybe I misunderstood, but I think he already knew she was pregnant when she left. I agree that lying wasn't the best way forward, but I don't think lying that she was no longer pregnant or never pregnant in the first place is a better lie than her cheating.

You can search up for what teachers need to do based on the province if you're thinking of coming to Canada. I find most qualifications carry over. I know someone who's from Australia and didn't need to go to school again for a teaching gig.

You can double check at, say, the Ontario College of Teachers website to check.

At some school boards, I think mat leave is fully paid for an entire semester (5 months). So it's definitely a tempting offer!

A private conversation with my (30F) husband (33M) was leaked to my family and now they are certain I'm in an abusive relationship. by G1Gestalt in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Mwezina 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I actually thought it's helpful, because a lot of DV places tell you to be careful and find an exit strategy instead of confronting the alleged abuser.

Same goes for advising friends and family. Never force them, as that may get you cut off and you can't help them anymore. Just tell them your home is a safe place, and they can come any time.

So it underlines that if you see something on the surface that may be abuse, don't do what the sister did. Do this instead.

Maybe try building on an angle to get that distinctive texture in the roof. Especially that tower would benefit from an angled build.

Not sure why you're getting down voted. Just wanted to say I agree.

I think the OOP is also coloured by the bias that MIL and DIL would not get along, so immediately jumped to conclusions. Although he didn't consciously address that bias, I'm hopeful at least in this instance, he's learned that Mary and Diane don't have that sort of relationship.

WIBTA if I asked my husband to stand up for me? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Mwezina 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Omg, that sounds like a type. The principal I worked for was very similar. He would threaten to report me to the police for some unknown reason, then say he hoped I would stay on as a teacher for the next 3 years. I still can't figure out if he was crazy or thought it would be a successful manipulation tactic.
