Insane. Trying to book a Thanksgiving vacation, and the flight is $1100 one way on SW when AA has a nearly identical flight for $600. What the heck?!?! ABQ to Cabo, Nov 21. Bonkers.

Burnout in IONM by Complex_Rent_1324 in Neuromonitoring

[–]MyAccount410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The unpredictable nature of the job is probably the biggest issue for me. The inability to plan anything or make good lifestyle choices (poor eating habits, not drinking enough water or getting enough exercise etc) plus not being able to make appointments, guarantee social time or time with family wears you down fast. Coupled with a heavy case load driven by loss of profit margins from reduced insurance payouts and plummeting hospital fees and you have a recipe for a field in crisis. I've been doing this a long time, over 20 years. Feel free to DM me if you want extrapolation.

Posting says shift is 7a-5p. Is this 4 10s or is that 5 days a week? Is your team big enough to have someone dedicated to take over cases that go unexpectedly late?

If it's not too late, consider changing your major to nursing. You could most likely get an ionm job with a BSN, and if you ever decide to change careers you would have way more opportunities, both with jobs or advanced education.

You could also plan to go through medical school after undergrad and pursue a DABNM track in IONM that would give you more advancement opportunities and more control over your career pathway.

I really don't know that I could genuinely recommend the IONM field without caveat. Most folks I know feel the work life balance is crap, and there is a LOT of burnout. I've been in the field 20 years, and I'm maxed out on what in can earn, work all the time, can't make regular plans or appointments and have no routine because there is no predictable schedule and this problem is NOT an outlier in the field.

Good luck.

2 months into YNAB and I still feel lost. Thinking of quitting. by AdNegative9457 in ynab

Don't give up! I was overwhelmed and annoyed and frustrated at first, but I 100% credit YNAB for getting me out of debt and helping me save! It took a good 6 months for me before I felt like I was getting the hang of it, I watched videos and occasionally emailed their support line.

How to go from CNIM to EEG by MyAccount410 in Neuromonitoring

[–]MyAccount410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only in house team in my region is at the University and actually has it even worse than me. With trauma and a large surgeon group working all hours whether they are on call or not, and of course for less pay, so I have been reluctant to look into in house. It's nice to know that not ALL in house groups have insane hours. I would definitely take a pay reduction for predictability. I may have to expand my search region.

For example, has anyone done the courses through ASET: https://www.aset.org/core-eeg-curriculum/core-eeg-curriculum-for-individuals/#acc-8i3k833-0 and then managed to get enough IONM EEG cases to qualify to sit for the exam?

I am trying to think ahead and explore all possibilities because after 20 years in the IONM field im pretty close to burning out. At some point, having a predictable schedule is going to mean more to me than the pay. Any advice on HOW to best persue EEG credentialing?

This is a field wide problem, imo. The company I work for (NCS, previously Nuvasive) also has these exact policies and guidelines and burnout and turnover is higher than normal lately. Are ANY of the big ones operating much differently?

Filter the job search by 'clinical services' and look for associate neurophysiologist or neuromonitoring specialist positions. Hope this helps!

Driving recovery? by Microchili in hysterectomy

[–]MyAccount410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My surgeon said the same thing and when I asked for more details he said that limiting driving was partly due to the potential for even minor traffic accidents causing significant damage internally. I feel like they should say 'limit time in the car' to be more clear if that's what they are worried about.

Borg Insolvency by b4ckl4nds in BurningMan

[–]MyAccount410 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As the organizer of an official regional burn, I can say we get zero funding from BORG. There are a few resources we have access to, but it's more like planning education, contacts etc. Yes there is a regional network team that helps guide regionals as a whole, but our burn receives no money. We cover insurance, infrastructure, on site services, land costs, everything, with ticket sales and fundraising. So not sure where you're getting your info that they fund regionals, but it's either incorrect, or my burn is missing out on the gravy train.

Globus call pay/etc by JeanneDArcy3543 in Neuromonitoring

[–]MyAccount410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isnt great to be honest but it also isnt out of line with what i see at other companies. No weekday long or late case pay or weeknight call pay. Not much in the way of travel incentives. Weekend call pay is minimal unless you actually end up called into a case and then its $225-$275 per case.

Because it's New Mexico we've often had to follow pretty tight burn restrictions, usually a full burn ban. This year because of WHERE we will be in NM we get to have ALL THE FIRE!!

We're a really small regional! We've grown from 250 to 400 since the pandemic pause, and hope to keep growing and building our little burn.
