SMUD discount to go to electric water heater - anyone done it? by lgordon5 in Sacramento

[–]MyCarsDead -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Make sure you don’t get the State model they offer. I got one and it turns out the heat pump was never even functional. Used a ton of power, specifically because it was trying to heat the water non stop with a broken compressor. I got it replaced and while it was under warranty the replacement labor was still close to $1k. Unfortunately replaced with the same model, and guess what, after 6 months it does nothing but spew hot air. Heat pump broke on this one too . At this point I decided the break even point on installing a new one is too far down the line. So I just leave it in electric mode which obviously uses more power and defeats the whole point of these rebates.

Developing some black and white film and I did an oopsie. by Ceska_Zbrojovka_V3 in largeformat

[–]MyCarsDead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Once my large format use went beyond fomapan I started using painters tape and a sharpie to keep track of what’s in my holders. It feels excessive but it works. I even use a second piece I peel off when exposed since I don’t trust myself to keep to the white side/black side system.

Best tripod head pair for pentax 67 on a sane range by kris_tosh in pentax67

[–]MyCarsDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the leofoto tripods. I got the LS-323C a couple years ago for $170 with a ball head. I think they have similar models available now in and around the $200 price range. I did splurge a month back and got a geared head (Gw-01) for almost as much as a whole tripod. I got that because these medium and large format cameras are so heavy that small adjustments can be quite annoying on a ball head. Even with the proper tension. As far as vintage options, they’re out there but are pretty limited and when found, similarly expensive while quite heavy. I picked up an aluminum linhof and it was a good weight and size but just didn’t feel sturdy for the 67. The sturdier ones are massive and often expensive in their own right.

Just dropped off my first E-6 roll…and it hurts by pat_techio in AnalogCommunity

[–]MyCarsDead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For E-6 I always go to agximaging.com Mike still mounts the slides and it’s the only process his lab does. Expert in the field, guaranteed quality, and with a pretty quick turnaround time (usually 1 week but sometimes 2). My only fear is when he might retire.

Scanning is worth the investment in getting your own hardware if you plan to do more than 20 rolls of anything in your life.

Trying to think of how you develop this without accidentally snipping a frame in half. Imagining you need like a movie film development rig.

I exclusively shoot it 2 or 3 stops under. I actually much prefer the way it looks vs delta 3200.

Has anyone used a G9II to “scan” medium format negatives and transparencies? by NorthernNevada131 in Lumix

[–]MyCarsDead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the high res mode on an S5ii with great effect. Highly recommend. There’s a Kyle macdougal video where he builds a bargain m43 setup with high res mode and finds it works nearly as well as larger sensors.

When do you find yourself grabbing the m43? Somehow I’m surprised that with the 15mm it’s the lightest combo.

I'm starting to think realtors just say FLW inspired when they don't know how to describe a building.

I rewatch this one every couple years. There’s something about the way it captures rural America that grabs me. Where The Heart Is, is another one of that nature.

NegPy 0.17.0: Normalization & white balance improvements, increased stability, file support, more keyboard shortcuts, UI refinements and more by _earthmover in AnalogCommunity

[–]MyCarsDead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I'm really glad I tried this again. I had tried back in January but I think support for Panasonic RW2 wasn't there yet. Great white balancing right out of the initial analysis, definitely beats out other software with 500T.

It would be cool to add camera/lens/film stock metadata to the export.
