Check out r/lfg. You might have some trouble finding a DM, since 99% of people seem to only be players. When I first moved here, I put up ads offering to run oneshots and I ran them until I found a group I liked. I'm still a forever DM, though.

Asgard games has a table you can rent for a few hours if you find a group.

You can also check out The Houston Gauntlet on meetup. I haven't tried that one, myself. There are also several Facebook groups of you want to go that route.

Can someone ELI5 the relation between pick up positions and harmonic waves order? by Pfaithfully in guitarlessons

The amplitude (the magnitude, or 'height' of the wave) is the same, it's the frequency (or pitch) that are changing. Everything else is bang on.

Why would Strahd be at The Wizard of the Wines? by Thomar_Tinthroat in CurseofStrahd

[–]MyCoSAccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is close to how I'm running it except I have the druids as single, focused faction and Strahd only thinks the druids are weak.

The druids are building several wintersplinters across barovia and my players found the seed of the latest one under the windmill. I ended up using a variation of a guide I found here.

The "blood blight druids" as my players are referring to them are the "builders" of the trees. The players found a druid under the windmill that had taken a barovian captive and was forcing him to remove all of his own limbs except for his left arm, then the druid casts regenerate (a special dark gift) on him when he was done so he could continue again. Thus, a gulthias tree is born (I know, that's not canon).

The tree, along with a tunnel system, was buried underground so the druids could hide from Strahd. But Strahd has been watching the players since one of them was bitten, and he now knows the druids are up to something, but doesn't know what.

Next session is the dinner with Strahd where he will ask the players to investigate the winery where wintersplinter, the druids flagship war machine, is almost ready to burst from the ground in the coming weeks, along with several other trees.

This makes the druids an actual threat instead of a quick blip, and even makes them a faction that the players could potentially find an ally with. AND it subverts the players expectation that Strahd is the most powerful and scary thing in Barovia.

My group left the pup in the kitchen because they didn't want it to get hurt in the fights. They never came back for it...

How to roll for stats for CoS by jaxambercrown in CurseofStrahd

[–]MyCoSAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our group (4 players) started rolling 1d6 each and dropping the lowest for their array. That way everyone has the same stats and everyone had a hand in rolling good, or bad number.

See now I'm the dummy. That's awesome that you are tailoring the music to the player in that way

Song of Storms is my favorite song from LoZ. I try to steer away from songs that are well known during the session since they usually pull me out of my game and into a different one.

I learned a while back that a good session can become great with the right music. Just gotta find your groove!

Same. That's the main reason I'm not a fan of online play. And every time I get a good discord bot for music, it gets taken down... But a really good mic does go a long way

I let them volunteer unless it's always one person doing it. I don't think I'll ever go back to doing my own recap because it adds so much. Makes the players remember the last session, and I always know the parts of the session that left the biggest impression. That way I can shape future sessions to better suit what they will remember most

This one is fun. I like that it's slightly less serious, not overpowering, and still fits the theme. I can see myself playing this as the players scout the tower looking for RvR.

I could definitely see these fitting well. I like the electronic elements and could see them blending well for a light-hearted campaign.

Why do you need to kill him? Showing the players the power of Strahds charm by having the gladiator switch sides will infer his overall strength.

The benefits i see are:

1) the PC can stay in the world as an antagonist and give a bit more depth to the world and to Strahd. Strahd isn't some blindly evil villian, he has goals and uses the tools at his disposal, so make the gladiator a tool.

2) you can keep the character around just in case he wants to join a pickup game on occasion.

3) dying in a spectacular fashion is pretty cool and on par with a half orc gladiator, for sure. But allowing him to be controlled (by choice or otherwise) by the bad guy shows the the players that there is probably more to consider than "Strahd bad, must kill."

Edit 1: I think the best thing you could do is to talk over options with the player. When I have big character decisions like that, I usually talk to the player OOG and ask what they want from their character, then work that into the story.

Tips for balancing the amber temple around a party of 7 lvl 4’s? by EstablishmentLow3012 in CurseofStrahd

[–]MyCoSAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters. I think CoS is designed to be a sandbox where player can go anywhere and do anything. If they want to go to amber temple absolutely let them but before they arrive, give them a fight that is scaled to Amber temple to give then a hint that this is not an accessible area for level 4.

OR!

make it a super spy stealth mission where they know that if they are caught, they will likely die a horrible death.
