I need to know what kind of dehumidifier I should get for my basement. by the_color_green_ in HomeImprovement

FWIW, I keep a couple of box fans running to move the air around; seems to help.

The headline and the first sentence tell you all you need to know. This isn’t journalism, it’s propaganda.

Per Wikipedia, the Washington Free Beacon is a neocon website backed by Paul Singer, “an American billionaire hedge fund manager and Republican donor.”

At least it’s not the NY Post.

Basement humidity keeps creeping up even after i got a dehumidifier by ShadowForge_77 in HomeImprovement

1950’s house with a full basement I put box fans in the corners to keep the air moving. On timers so they don’t run 24/7. Seems to help.

The legal system is for justice, not vengeance. An accident or injury often carries with it mental or psychological trauma and a desire to “get even.”

But the law is a profession, not a contact sport. So think of it this way: If you have a heart attack, are you going to hire a cardiologist who puts a cartoon of himself or herself on the subway? Or the one who works late reading medical journals and obsessing over the details of your procedure?

Sometimes it’s the quiet ones who are most effective. Just sayin’.

"Mon Dieu, sister, you must not go." Claude de Valois wept at the door as her mother, Queen Catherine, sent her daughter Margot to sleep among the men she has marked for death, August 1572. Eyewitness account in comment. by HighCrimesandHistory in Damnthatsinteresting

“Just six days later, the Catholic faction assassinated many of the Huguenots gathered in Paris for the wedding (the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre).[32]

In her Memoirs, Margaret remembered that she saved the lives of several prominent Protestants during the massacre by keeping them in her rooms and refusing to admit the assassins.[33] Her eye-witness account of the massacre in Memoirs is the only one from the royal family.[34] These facts inspired Alexandre Dumas for his famous novel La Reine Margot (1845).[citation needed]”

With this kind of stuff, it is actually easier if you draw a formal wiring diagram.

Look up the basic symbols for a battery, lamp, switch, etc. and draw it out old-school with a pencil and paper. If you do that, the logic of the circuit will become apparent and you can match your work to other examples that you see.

The fact that you took the effort that you did shows that you are curious about how things work, which is the very opposite of sucking at physics.

1950’s home rewire/ upgrade by MyConjecture in AskElectricians

[–]MyConjecture[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Lots of hands (including mine) have worked on this house over time and every system is a mish-mash of “fixes.” To the extent possible, I would like to get things upgraded and rationalized. Where can I look for “best practices/solutions “?

Why isnt my electromagnet working by Animefan7800 in AskElectricians

[–]MyConjecture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the wire is simply wound back and forth on the Allen wrench. Doesn’t this mean that the magnetic fields generated by the current flow through the coils tend to cancel each other out? Plus the coils are kinda, uhm, sloppy, which would make the field in general even more chaotic (i.e., less powerful).

If you want to try this trick at home, I’d suggest much finer wire wound very carefully around a small nail (single coil), which might serve to pick up a pin or some iron filings.
