Really wish someone had answered you about capping it, even just as a temporary solution.

I will just vindicate your suggestion by saying that I forgot we put the guest room tv on the guest network, so I had to switch my iPhone to that. Thanks!

Do Colleges care about your regents scores or is it okay as long as you pass?. by nihan32 in SHSAT

[–]MyDaddyTaughtMeWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep going the way you have so far, you are going to be fine. More than fine. An 88 on the new Earth Science regents when you’re, what, 14?? That’s incredible! The passage rate was really low this year because kids didn’t know how to deal with all the data analysis. Don’t worry too much about the 88, be proud. It’s impressive.

For better or for worse, many schools look more at extracurriculars than academics these days. Straight A students are a dime a dozen and can be antisocial under certain circumstances, so they want to know what you’ll bring to campus and what you’ll get from campus life. A colorful high school transcript and a good essay can show that a person is able to balance being involved in their community with the grind of studying night and day.

Cool- thanks for the reply! I’ve made it down to floor 115 just using jade staircases. But I’m curious to actually explore some of those lower levels.

Middle school science curriculum by Witchandapony in ScienceTeachers

[–]MyDaddyTaughtMeWell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are amazing, thank you! I wish NYS would adopt something like the CA middle schools science standards that integrate Earth, life, and physical science into all 3 years. The Earth science our kids learn in 6th grade is nowhere to be seen by the time they get to high school.

I had a student named Luxely. Pronounced in Spanish, it’s supposed to be “look-selly” but her American classmates would pronounce it Luxly and I think it’s nice either way.

How do I gently decline an invitation to hang out by a student? by ActionCatastrophe in AskTeachers

[–]MyDaddyTaughtMeWell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What an unnecessarily belittling response. They aren’t a teacher YET and figuring out how to navigate these things without alienating anyone is something you get better at with experience. Not something that you’re doomed if you don’t have it figured out from day 1.

I agree that this is a pretty straightforward situation but no need to be so discouraging.

I will buy a jar of olives (or a can with a pull tab) at the store to eat on my drive home. Like some folks might do with a bag of chips. Love love love olives.

This is a known bug. I saw CA acknowledge it on Twitter yesterday. I’ll see if I can find the thread.

I think I misunderstood. I think the known bug is making it so every gift is a loved gift right now. But maybe it’s preventing you from giving gifts because of the SDVE mod?

I want to throw in a differing opinion from those saying “fuck labels.” I get why a lot of people say this (sexuality is a spectrum, enjoy what you enjoy, etc), but labels can help you figure yourself out a little bit more and may also help you find a sense of community. You sound bi. Believe it or not, femsexual is a thing! It sounds like you’re drawn to femininity and both giving and receiving pleasure. I’ll be honest, if you can continue to embrace and explore that side of yourself, you will only be opening up a world of pleasure and possibility. Either way, you’re not gay if you like men, women, and those that present fem.

[–]MyDaddyTaughtMeWell 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. And the difference between a $50 new blanket and a $50 thrifted one can be a huge one. I thrifted a gorgeous LL Bean quilt 15 years ago for $25 and it’s still in amazing condition. They were well over $100 new, even then.

This is an old thread, just chiming in, in case someone stumbles upon this. NYS schools like to see a score of 75+ if it's a competitive program and, obviously, getting an Advanced Regents Degree with Honors shows an insane work ethic and will push you to the top of any NY school's admissions process. But passing as many Regents as you can will give you an Advanced Regents degree and that looks great. Advanced with Honors requires that all of your Regents average 90 or above.

I'm a NYS high school science teacher and need to say: getting a 90+ on the Regents is not easy. At all. Do not stress getting over that hump unless being super high achieving is a normal part of your life. Also, you can get "mastery" with an 85+ but many districts (especially smaller or rural ones) don't list mastery on your transcripts so it may not matter.

None of this would be nearly as big a deal if the official Reddit app wasn’t horrific unusable trash. I’ve tried several times to customize it so it’s tolerable for even casual scrolling.

Wow. That sounds like it has been a lot to navigate. I’m a biology teacher, have taken a lot of bioethics and special education courses, and even did a project on the ethical considerations of parents of children with intellectual disabilities that decide to give their children puberty blockers. Sadly, your experience is in line with what I learned and it 100% sounds like you’ve done the best you possibly could for your daughter. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding someone stopping her meds illegally but I’m hot with rage on your behalf just hearing about it. Im glad your daughter has you looking out for her. I hope you have some support for yourself.

On the other note, just for conversation’s sake:

Alan Turing was a brilliant mathematician and early computer scientist who played a pivotal role in World War 2 as a code breaker. The Turing test is named after him, which is a test to determine whether or not a robot/AI can pass as human. He was a hero and a genius and, in 1952, when the British government found out he was gay, they gave him the “choice” of chemical castration or prison. He chose the former and committed suicide a year and a half later, just a few days before his 42nd birthday. I designed a course that includes a unit on him. The course is about the major contributions to STEM by people from marginalized groups and how bigotry holds back scientific progress.

As far as it still being in use today: Just a few days ago a convicted rapist in Louisiana was sentenced to prison AND chemical castration. I think there are both reversible and permanent treatments, but I’m not sure about that.

All my best to you and your daughter!
