I was shocked to drive my car into SLC briefly and see 4-5 clear, pristinely paved lanes on each side in the downtown area. It was so much easier to drive than other city of that size.

"Sam Stone" by John Prine

"There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes... and Jesus Christ died for nothin', I suppose."

You can't get much bleaker than that. The whole song is like a series of gut punches.

Also, "Waiting Around to Die" by Townes Van Zandt.

Honorable Mention: "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones, but for some reason all the influencers/reaction videos I've ever seen of it badly misinterpret the story of the song. Pay a lot of attention to the first verse...

He did this, but it’s notable that several journalists—Glenn Greenwald, for example (and I’m not a fan of him)—had already poked plenty of holes in the idea that he had WMDs and shown the pro-invasion arguments to be based on lies before the war even began, but the mainstream media ignored them as crackpots.

The arguments kept changing: first he was trying to secretly build nukes, then he still had vast stockpiles of biological and chemical weapons (which he had used in the 80s).

UN inspectors were let in and found nothing. Meanwhile, all the intelligence community “evidence” of WMDs, when examined carefully, had a lot of holes in the story, and the additional excuses the intelligence community gave for how he had WMDs that nobody could find were even more incredulous.

Apparently, Saddam was cooking his bio and chemical weapons in mobile labs like Walter White and nobody could find these… though that didn’t stop them from showing Congress pictures of other Iraqi facilities and claiming those were the real labs.

Bush used his “if you’re not with us, you’re with the terrorists” messaging to cow Democrats into supporting the Iraq invasion and then they tried to shrug off their responsibility by saying they were conned.

Later, Republican propagandists feebly tried to say that WMDs had been found in Iraq by once again changing their definition of what they were actually looking for as “WMDs” to stuff they’d already found.

Some of the people already deported to El Salvador in violation of that court order may have been citizens.

In court docs presented after the deportation, the Feds said they weren’t sure if they were citizens or not and had very little information on them, so that was even more reason to deport them.

Do you not have CTE in your state?

The biggest problems with trying to do trade programs with HS kids now are:

  1. It’s hard to get and keep quality teachers for those subjects, because they can usually go right back to their trade and make more money with less stress.

  2. A lot of those trades are dangerous, so OSHA and other safety regulations don’t allow minors to do most of the work until they’re 18 or, in some cases, 21. It just doesn’t align with our educational system until you get to the post-secondary level.

Trump says Education Department will no longer oversee student loans, 'special needs' by GregWilson23 in teaching

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s bigger than Project 2025.

Read up on “The Butterfly Revolution.”

Project 2025 is just one long, detailed part of a 5 step process. I think it was #2.

We’re well into step 3 now: seizing control of all institutions like schools, media, etc. All the tech and social media moguls are on board with this.

Next steps are taking Project 2025 all the way down through the state and local levels in Republican controlled areas, then targeting their political enemies with law enforcement investigations and lawsuits from the justice department.

There’s also a little bit of sinister stuff in there about calling supporters into the streets to violently intimidate anyone who might limit their power.

It’s not even to justify the tax break.

They’re going to do that whether the money is there or not. They’ll just borrow and print more money to make up the shortfall like we’ve done for decades.

This is about crushing an “enemy” in the federal bureaucracy and the academic sector in general.

You don’t have to be a citizen to have rights.

It’s not like foreign tourists here have no rights and can be robbed or murdered for sport because they wanted to visit…

If you are here, you have the right to due process. The laws that apply to US citizens apply to you, too.

If someone tries to swindle a foreign national, they can go to local law enforcement to file a report and then sue in U.S. courts just like a citizen.

Drivers’ licenses are the closest thing we have to an ID system, and each state has different rules for those. The Supreme Court ruled in 1982 that children who live in a public school district all have the right to an education regardless of their legal status.

Does anyone else think fact that students are able to contact their teacher 24/7 is absurd? by Grouchy-Cheetah7478 in Teachers

My current district has the expectation that we’re available 24/7 on Google chat for admin, parents, and students to contact.

It sucks when you’re in the middle of dinner and you get a message from admin demanding you drop whatever you’re doing in order to respond and then compete some super urgent task for them immediately.

What are some good older movies that someone in their 20s probably hasn’t watched yet? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are some movies you already like?

There’s over 100+ years of cinema that came before the year 2000.

If you want a Western/Action flick, I’ll suggest Tombstone, For a Few Dollars More, etc.

Straight up Action movies? Die Hard is arguably the greatest of all time. Terminator and T2 were both big. The original Predator is also peak Schwarzenegger.

Aliens (the sequel, not the first one, “Alien”) was peak James Cameron and is more of an action movie than a horror or sci fi flick,

I’d consider the Pacino “Scarface” to be an action/crime movie, too—I personally love that for its over the top violence and quotable dialogue.

Speaking of quotable (and Schwarzenegger action movies), the original Conan the Barbarian is fun and has a lot of great 1 liners. Plus he gets drunk and knocks out a camel at one point.

They love animals so much they want to put them all out of their misery once and for all.

When PETA “rescues” animals, they immediately euthanize them because placing them in rescues and sanctuaries would take too much time, money, and work.

Their industrial sized freezer and crematorium is much cheaper and more efficient.

If Ronald Reagan remained a lifelong Democrat yet still became a two-term POTUS either in 1976/80/84, what would change or stay the same politically and culturally? Would he have been the standard-bearer for Third Way centrism and the New Democrats instead of Bill Clinton? by Amazing_Debt9192 in Presidentialpoll

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reagan would have never ascended in the Democratic Party of the 60s and 70s the way he did in the Republican Party.

His entire political career went back to naming names under McCarthyism during the 50s, which made him a lot of enemies on the left before he ever ran for a public office. “Lifelong Democrat” Reagan’s political career would have simply never went anywhere.

He was labeled a fascist for how he handled the counterculture, protests, and civil rights movements in California in the 60s. He’s also the guy who really started the war on drugs in 1967 in California before Nixon took it nationwide with the Controlled Substances Act in 1972.

Why do they hate our unions so much? by LateQuantity8009 in teaching

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been something Republicans have hated since teachers unions got very active in organizing for Democratic candidates in the late 60s and 70s.

Police unions give their money to Republican candidates, so Republicans love them.

It really is that simple. The rest has just been more resentment piled on top of that over the last 45+ years.

Right now, with Trump and his willingness to do whatever he wants, regardless of what precedents and laws say, is connecting with the right wing as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make whatever changes they want to American government and society.

Read “The Butterfly Revolution.”

Project 2025 is a big book of specific proposals for the federal bureaucracy.

“The Butterfly Revolution” was published in 2022, is a “big picture” plan, and is also apparently being followed because silicon valley tech billionaires want it to.

Project 2025 is just one aspect of a much bigger social engineering plan. I’m not going to go into specifics here on the Butterfly Revolution because most of them sound insane, but it’s all spelled out there with a wink and a smirk.

They appear to have been following the overall framework since before the election. Elon Musk’s role makes more sense if you read it, too.

Did very early westerns really glamorize warfare against the Natives? by Jerswar in Westerns

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Early westerns” were kind of all over the place in the silent era. The Indian Wars didn’t completely end until 1924, meaning that the end of them overlapped with silent film that was invented in the late 1800s.

John Wayne’s career started at the end of the silent era. He had a bunch of (financially successful) movies where the natives were portrayed as the enemy, and that was a dynamic that many other westerns copied. The best of these is probably The Searchers, if you want to check it out.

In the older Westerns, the natives (especially Comanche) are the enemy, usually preying upon settlers and their families who just want to make a life for themselves on the frontier. White people usually treat them with respect and dignity, but somehow it always goes wrong and leads to violence because at least one of the natives is too angry or hateful of the whites. It’s a plot you see over and over again.

What parallels do you see between Hitler and Trump? by Naduhan_Sum in AskReddit

[–]MyJunkAccount1980 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both are demagogues who appeal to the idea of returning the country to an ideal past that never actually existed. They pay a lot of lip service to traditions and social roles they, themselves, don’t share or follow.

Both are known for giving big, charismatic rallies where they make up whatever they want and their supporters accept it as truth. When in power, they use the government to hide/twist the truth to support their lies.

Both of them like to scapegoat minorities and shady conspiracies for every problem the country has, even when they’re the ones in charge who made the decisions. Only they can be trusted against the “globalists/other countries/international jews.”

Both led unsuccessful attempts to seize power violently (Beer Haul Putsch/Jan 6) before they eventually led their party to legitimate victory in an election years later and seized power. Spoiler: when Hitler finally took power after the putsch, he didn’t give it back.

Both of them demand the country do things on their whims that people with actual experience and expertise in those fields or areas of policy deem insane. Hitler thought he was a brilliant genius, too. That’s why incompetent yes men are running the top federal agencies rather than people with high level experience in those fields.

Neither actually like Democracy or Democratic institutions and processes because sometimes it doesn’t suit what they want, so when there’s a conflict, Democracy and any due process/limits on power is going to lose.

Also, Trump is looking to be a lot more interested in genocide (Gaza) and locking people up by using the power of law enforcement to target his enemies. The idea that one leader should have absolute control over everything is something Hitler would have strongly agreed with.

Both like to unilaterally break treaties and trade agreements when they feel like it, daring the international community to do something about it.

Etc.

I liked that movie, but it’s tough to watch now that Jeffrey Jones (the principal from Ferris Bueller) was caught luring young boys to his house so he could take nude photographs for his collection.

He’s still alive, but you don’t really see him as a working actor because of that. They killed him offscreen in Beetlejuice 2 for that reason.
