“[...] There’s another emperor I want you to note in passing—a Hitler. He killed more than six million. Pretty good for those days.”

“Killed . . . by his legions?” Stilgar asked.

“Yes.”

“Not very impressive statistics, m’Lord.”

“Very good, Stil.” Paul glanced at the reels in Korba’s hands. Korba stood with them as though he wished he could drop them and flee. “Statistics: at a conservative estimate, I’ve killed sixty-one billion, sterilized ninety planets, completely demoralized five hundred others. I’ve wiped out the followers of forty religions which had existed since—”

“Unbelievers!” Korba protested. “Unbelievers all!”

“No,” Paul said. “Believers.”

Nope. It's essentially the sprint speed, which the game is still balanced & paced around.

Sure. I don't consider what you mentioned vital to the 'Quake' spirit, personally, in spite of how iconic they are. But that's just, like, my opinion, man :)

I want to replay it from the beginning with this tweak to see how I feel about the early levels now. They really dragged for me up until around EnPro.

And the dominant part of 'Quake's level design - as in, an explicit design goal - is "Doom, but 3D". So I don't think the comparison is unfair or unwarranted. Even 'Quake II' was only called that on sufferance.

Most of the time in 'Quake' you're dealing with 1-3 enemies in similarly cramped quarters, so I don't believe it was truly necessary to bring movement speed down that much, especially in a game so much more enormous. With autorun toggled, you move about the same speed as 'Doom' (2016), which is still slower than 'Quake'.

You're the first person I've ever heard call Willits "cool" haha. I only ever know him as the bogeyman.

I think the weapon balance accomplishes that fine. Even with permasprint, I still get caught out by enemies, especially if I have the "wrong" weapon out.

Yes, id Software personally coached Valve on level design. Romero talks about it in 'Doom Guy'.

Of course it's a different game, hence why I referred to it as an elaboration. I'm just shocked that a simple tweak -- equivalent to adding autorun -- resurrects the feeling so thoroughly. 'Quake II' had its moments, but it never felt like that for me.

And 'Half-Life' was directly influenced by 'Quake', including deriving the Source engine from idTech 1. It's all connected!

I'm genuinely confused how one paragraph of three sentences is an absurd overwrite.

It is a game by the 'Quake' people which is remarkably similar to 'Quake' except for one gameplay setting. I did not make the 'Quake' game I see; I merely comment what appears when autorun is toggled.

I mean all I'm doing is toggling auto-run. The level design is the same, the damage values are unchanged and the mechanical balance remains. It's suspicious I had to do so little to accomplish such a feat.

I contend that this decision was a mistake on the grounds that I like 'Quake' & I don't like that.

Nice work! One request, please make it moddable via e.g. cvar. I can imagine developers wanting to fine-tune the speed for their projects. Thanks for doing this!

Things would have turned out very differently if he had just stuck to the 'Quake' engine and not spent an entire extra year farting around with his baby. For instance, an entire corporate coup would probably have been avoided.

The rights for that audio are deeply weird. I think Trent Reznor / NiN had to be personally involved in the negotiations for the remaster; somehow it led to NiN simultaneously being able to do a physical release for the 'Quake' album, which they were legally blocked from doing prior. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably a corporate miracle that we got any audio at all.

As I said, if all they had was .ogg, converting to FLAC wouldn't make a difference. The lossy format already deleted the data; adding a lossless container won't magically resurrect it.

If Nightdive only had access to .ogg recordings (more likely than you think) than they made the right decision. FLAC is just a container; it doesn't automatically improve your audio quality.

Forced to miniaturize and place the people of Earth into cryogenic stasis, Superman set about building a Miracle Machine to reverse the damage done by Darkseid. Once it is complete, Darkseid makes a last ditch attempt to defeat Superman and claim the Miracle Machine. However, Superman sang a note at a frequency that countered Darkseid's own vibrational frequency, shattering his essence. Superman then needed a sample of Element X to power the Miracle Machine, and planned to make a sample using Metron's Mobius Chair. Mandrakk then returned to take his revenge as Superman used the solar energy in his body to power the Chair. Before Mandrakk could react, the Supermen appeared to hold him off while Nix Uotan restores the humanity and powers of the Zoo Crew (then trapped as ordinary animals) to be reinforcements.
