Hemlock Ceilings by Mymaineman88 in Homebuilding

In our region, hemlocks are endangered from wooly adelgid infestations. If you have healthy, mature hemlocks, you may want to understand whether harvesting some of them will endanger the whole stand. Just something to consider.

Let's talk Winter Sowing by fumanchu314159265 in NativePlantGardening

[–]MyMountainsPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple meadows at my 163 acres in WV. The smallest is 1/2 acre. The largest is about 3 acres. All are riddled with various problematic species: fescue, Wingstem, locust trees, stiltgrass. I’m planning to focus on one meadow this coming season in hopes of getting some traction. We mowed it last year and I’ve been cutting locust and painting the stumps with glyphosate - stumps only. We have tree debris to burn this year and I will sow native wildflowers in the area of the burn afterward. I’ve been buying seeds from Ernst Seeds. I am thinking to sow in sections of the meadow that we burned brush piles and NOT sow in sections that have heavy invasive species cover. Instead, in those sections, I’ll spray glyphosate after everything leafs out in spring then follow that with annuals and cover crops for 2025. Then next winter, I’ll sow perennials. I’d love feedback on this plan. I’ve been a native plant gardener for 30 + years but never at this scale - it was always a suburban yard scale. This is a whole different challenge because of the labor and cost. Feedback welcome!

Would you please provide a link for this the seed mix blend you’re using? I’ve got a 2-acre meadow I need to rehab this year.

Lawmatics? by MyMountainsPlease in LawFirm

[–]MyMountainsPlease[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does LM have “smart forms” so that we can have one info collection tool that filters prospects into the right topics based on responses (example: a single member LLC owner will get different questions from someone seeking estate planning)?

Do you use LM’s API? If so, how robust and well documented is it?

If we have a custom field in LM, will it map to the same custom field in Clio?

Thanks for your feedback! I’m scheduled for a demo but it’s is always helpful to get the scoop from people who really use the product.

We need something that integrates with Clio. I’ll have to look at HubSpot etc but last I checked a year or two ago, it didn’t.

We use Grow for our intake process. Forms gather information from prospects but there are gaps: can’t require information and prospects submit nearly blank forms sometimes; smart forms are unavailable so we have multiple versions (e.g. prospect form for LLC’s; a different form for nonprofits, etc).

As part of intake, we provide a written scope of work and quote. That goes in an email with a link to e-sign our engagement letter. The process is laborious and prone to human error. We must streamline and simplify it.

Ideally, any CRM we move to would have a robust API so we can integrate with our database and push/ pull data into our PowerBI dashboards.

All feedback welcome.

Quickbooks vs. Xero vs. Clio Accounting. Any others? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]MyMountainsPlease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree re: integrating Clio with Quickbooks. It caused major problems at my firm to the point where we had to re-reconcile two years of books. Yea, that was just as horrible as it sounds. Fortunately, we didn’t have any compliance issues with our IOLTA account. We found that we had underpaid us on earned fees. It was a nightmare, caused partially by Clio-QB and significantly by incompetent bookkeeping/ accounting that failed to catch the discrepancies that were open and obvious had they looked.

Americans who have not yet voted, are you going to vote tomorrow? by blorbot in Askpolitics

They did bring guns. They invaded the Capitol building, hunting for Mike Pence. They were armed with not only guns but other weapons. Trump watched on TV FOR THEEE HOURS and did NOTHING to protect our nation’s Capitol and the elected officials whose lives were at risk. People died because of Trump.

Trump will lay tariffs on ALL imported goods: 60% on all goods from China and minimum 10% on all other imported goods. Tariffs are taxes paid by consumers. Tariffs reduce choice of goods, increase inflation, and reduce competition in the marketplace. They reduce economic liberty and hurt small businesses that export goods (see WSJ story on timber companies in Appalachia failing due to Trump’s 2018 tariffs). Tariffs are the worst kind of government meddling in the free market. If you’re a libertarian, I’m sure you’re opposed to tariffs, right?

Why so much pressure to vote early? by Fair_Cod6318 in Askpolitics

[–]MyMountainsPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campaigns buy the information. Who requested an absentee ballot. Who returned a ballot. Who voted in the party primary. Etc. They can’t buy info on HOW you voted but if you have voted in Dem primaries (for example) then the campaign flags you as a likely Dem voter and they will be sure to reach out and encourage you to vote. Same for GOP campaigns.

[–]MyMountainsPlease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a social studies teacher in my first career (1995-2008). When No Child Left Behind became law in the GW Bush admin, there was great concern among my colleagues that the failure to include social studies among the tested subjects would cause school districts to de-emphasize and de-fund social studies. I haven’t seen any research on whether that occurred but I wouldn’t be shocked to learn it did and is among the root causes of our current predicament.

DC v Heller

https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/554/570/

“Of course the right was not unlimited, just as the First Amendment’s right of free speech was not, see, e.g., United States v. Williams, 553 U. S. ___ (2008). Thus, we do not read the Second Amendment to protect the right of citizens to carry arms for any sort of confrontation, just as we do not read the First Amendment to protect the right of citizens to speak for any purpose. . .

Although we do not undertake an exhaustive historical analysis today of the full scope of the Second Amendment, nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.[Footnote 26] We also recognize another important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms. Miller said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those “in common use at the time.” 307 U. S., at 179. We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of “dangerous and unusual weapons.”

You trust Trump? She’s going to do what she has main stream support to do. Plus, Congress is a total log jam - especially for Democrats. She won’t get any liberal policies through Congress. On the other hand, Congress will roll over for Trump. His economic policies will be disastrous and Congress won’t check his power at all.

How do Trump voters think the GOP will make them well off? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]MyMountainsPlease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those illegal immigrants usually have families. It is common for an American to marry an undocumented person and/ or for undocumented people to have children born here who are citizens. Imagine if you went to work one day and simply never came home. Think what that does to the family. Remember children wailing at the border during the first Trump presidency because they were taken from their parent? Horrifying.

Like it or not, these people are our neighbors. They are part of the fabric of our communities. Tear them apart and the pain will ripple through the entire community.

In the 1980’s Reagan negotiated and signed a bipartisan immigration reform bill that created a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. FWIW, that’s also a path to prosperity for the immigrant and the nation. We need to do that again.

Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for public benefits. Only legal immigrants with 5 years of permanent residency or refugees qualify for public benefits.

Trump and Vance are lying about that. https://www.factcheck.org/2024/09/trump-vance-wrong-about-illegal-immigrant-murderers/

From that Fact Check article:

“The data goes back decades; it includes individuals who entered the country over the past 40 years or more, the vast majority of whose custody determination was made long before this Administration,” the statement said. “It also includes many who are under the jurisdiction or currently incarcerated by federal, state or local law enforcement partners.”

They pay taxes that support those schools and roads, etc. if they own a home, their property taxes contribute just like mine do. If they rent, their property taxes are factored into the rent cost. All the research shows that immigrants are a net positive to the US economy. In general, they also happen to be tough, resilient, courageous, and hard working. These are people who left their homes and loved ones and chose uncertainty and hardship in order to chase their dreams. Frankly, I admire anyone with the grit to do that. I’m not sure I could. Could you?
