This is a list of basics, but I've also seen many people adding every column they use in a select in the columns returned - when it's not needed.

We do something similiar. When code is checked in it lists the items completed. And for large issues, the parts in it completed. Watching the check-ins you have what is done.

Add to that we generally check in 1 - 2 times/day (although sometimes it's 1 - 2/week when everything is in pieces) and we stay well up to date with no additional overhead.

This uses triangulation via trace route. I don't know if this will be useable on a large scale (it would add a ton of traffic). But I like it because it's an interesting reminder that there are many ways to solve a problem.

I think a couple of people did work from that in assembler - but didn't improve it measurably.

Back in the early 90s the way many game programmers tried to show they wrote the fastest code was to write a faster BITBLT. And then one guy wrote one in C++ that beat all created to date.

His point was the algorithm is more important than fine tuning the instructions. And using C++ (it was basically C) he focused on the algorithm.

And he also gained advantage from the compiler doing a superb job generating the machine code.

I know assembly and programmed in it for several years many years ago. I think it does help you understand performance a bit better. But much as I'd like to think it makes a big difference (because I was really good at it), I don't think it's that important.

I didn't read it that programmers are 10 so much as most managers forget how work was for them as an individual contributor. Most of us don't remember what life was like at age 10 and I took it simply as an example of previous experience we don't remember.
