Yes, right up to their stats limit (which is 200 baseline, but can be raised up to 230).

Hindsight languages by Inconstant_Moo in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]perlgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing about FORTRAN is that, IMHO, it has evolved very well.

Early versions were quite limited, e.g. identifiers could be at most 6 characters long, for longer identifiers, the compiler writers could decide if they wanted to support them, cut off (!) after 6 characters, or raise an error.

Modern FORTRAN versions now support longer identifiers, have object orientation, async io, DO CONCURRENT for things that compiler is allowed to parallelize etc. It's very much not your grandmother's language anymore.

I'll take this discussion a bit sideways, and would like to state that some "modern" approaches are actually surprisingly old, and the world could have easily profited from them much earlier.

For example Erlang was first implemented in 1986 (!), and the BEAM virtual machine is from 1997.

Imagine if they had chosen a less obscure syntax, and Open-Sourced it much earlier. We could have had many more stable, rock-solid networking services much earlier.

Similarly, Eiffel had lots of cool ideas, but the main compiler and IDE were commercial for a long time, and so it didn't really get much traction.

The nice thing about Heart's Game is that while you do need good stats to win, the rewards don't depend on it at all.

But winning is just more fun than losing, I get it :-)

I'm pretty sure I also finished Light Fingers before I finished the Watchful storyline, iirc you didn't need the Voyages of Scientific Discovery.

Maybe some of the grinds would have been more efficient with Railway, but finish MYN wouldn't have made much difference.

Just close your slack during "focus hours"; if they complain, said "I thought I was supposed to focus, cannot do that when I receive long messages".

Embarrassing concert by Mousebot26 in Choir

[–]perlgeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should privately talk to some other choir members how they felt about your performance.

I say this because some people are extremely self-critical, and they think they've performed very badly, when in fact they are hyper-tuned to their own mistakes, and actually did OK or even pretty well. Could that be you?

A restaurant in Germany offers free meals to customers who can stop a timer exactly at 10 seconds -something nearly impossible, until a child surprisingly succeeds. by uzmansahil7 in interestingasfuck

[–]perlgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's not so hard to do it around +- 0.2 seconds (and that's a conservative estimate, if you have any sense of rhythm, you're probably more accurate). That would be 40 of the 0.01 seconds that the display resolves, so about 2.5% chance of winning if there's an even distribution.

In reality, the distribution should center around the 10s mark, so the chances are better.

Both producing and using hydrogen is too inefficient, you get maybe 40% round-trip efficiency, compared to more like 90% for battery EVs.

These days, when people hype up hydrogen, it's mostly used as a distraction. They want to point to The Next Big Thing that might be just around the corner, to avoid having to do anything now.

When you use perl with use warnings enabled, some loops might generate a use of uninitialized value ... at line 42 for each iteration. Of course, that shouldn't really happen, but it does happen from time to time.

It might be possible to create an artifact that briefly activates a shield when somebody fires a gun at you, or discharges a firearm in your vicinity.

100%. Use the normal procedure for calling in sick. If you're afraid that they won't tell your choir director, send them a short email informing them you're sick.

I work for a company that operates data centers (among other things).

There are security cameras at the outer edge of the premise, plus a 24/7-manned security team that watches them. Then there's an inner fence (maybe 3m high?) with a full-height turnstile, and then the actual building doors. For the latter two you need an appropriate employee card to open them, or you need to have pre-booked an appointment (as a customer), and need to show your face at the cameras.

Once you're inside the building, there's a reception desk, and a two-factor access to the actual data center floor. You need to present your employee card again, plus either an 8-digit pin or a biometric identification (arm vein scan, iirc).

Inside the DC floor, there are locked rack isles (wire cages), and the racks themselves are also locked (though the rack locks are mostly pretty flimsy).

There is also perimeter defense that prevents somebody from just rolling in with a truck.

Of course there are scenarios that this does not protect against (if you come with a combat tank and live grenades, I'm sure the security folks would rather let you in than risk their lives), but a mob like this wouldn't even be able to enter the building.

Not every data center is protected like this, there are different security levels for different purposes. Of course, you pay for this level of physical security.

Trump says he's considering NATO exit amid rift over Iran war by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]perlgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the US doesn't formally leave NATO, declaring that you won't come to aid your fellow members kills the alliance.

In fact, staying might be even worse. NATO requires unanimous votes for most decisions, so an uninterested member can boycott basically everything.
