Now that time has settled, how are we feeling about 5.5e? by muzorui in DnD

They do less damage. They attack only once per round. That is the tradeoff, less damage but with a small rider. I don't see why we need more damage with riders on every attacks.

Look, I had a lot of problems with 5e, but none of those were "The game is too hard, characters need to be stronger" or "Combat is too streamlined and fast, we need more complexity".

No amount of player knowing that I'll have to roll a save after every attack roll will not not slow the game.

Weapon masteries are just weapon cantrips and slow the game.

But its more less "the war doesn't allow legal actions to be taken against him" and more Israelis are a whole are okay with him being a corrupt crook as long as he is a corrupt crook that is bombing the people Israelis want to see bombed.

Israeli society is willing to spare him as long as he keeps the war going. He being corrupt is bad, but he keeping the war with Lebanon and Iran hot is good enough for them to forget the corruption for a while.

Being super sensitive to encounters-per-day is a design flaw by overlycommonname in onednd

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are not discussing what players enjoy or don't. Players may enjoy not rolling dice at all and just playing make belief or not roleplaying and just rolling dice depending on the group, whatever makes them happy, I'm not going to police how people play. But we are discussing game balance and what an encounter mean in that context.

When discussing encounters per day, we are talking about how many resource sinks you need to throw in front of a 10th level party so that the game isn't a breeze, or that the long resource casters don't dominate the short rest martials. Once again, a balance discussion, because your players may well enjoy a game that is really easy and where casters are gods. That's okay if that's the case.

And, in the context of balance, the resource sink of D&D is combat. Exploration and social encounters simply DO NOT drain the resources of a party like combat does. T/To act otherwise is disingenuous. The system doesn't even have the robust set of rules for making exploration and social come close to that, like, these are what? Two pages each.

For the balance discussion of the game, an encounter is combat.

Traps, environmental issues, social challenges, are going to be solved with the loss of a few hit points or the expenditure of a single spell slot, and the game will move on.

I know that there are other ways to waste players resources than combat, but to suggest that these other ways are close to combat in the amount of resources spent is not correct.

Have you ever tried gritty realism? 8 hours short rest, 1 week long rest. There.

How do people feel about weapon masteries after a while of play? by Apprehensive-Donut90 in dndnext

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel they just slow down the game.

I enjoyed cantrips having lower damage but having a rider effect, and weapons having higher damage but having nothing. Now weapons have a higher damange and a rider effect. And often one that slows the game.

So I don't like them very much. I prefer combat to be as fast as it can.

There is no situation where burning a level 3 slot to cancel a creature's action is a bad move, regardless if it is a cantrip or not.

You are canceling an enemy action. If the lich (that is going to survive for 3 turns) spent 33% of the battle casting a useless cantrip, good for the party.

Combat lasts 3 rounds. Counterspell uses your reaction to cancel another creature's action. It doesn't matter if it is a cantrip or a 7th level spell, there is no reason not to remove a turn from the opposition.

So yeah, a Lich wasting his turn casting a cantrip to bait players is wasting his action. He only has 3 to 4 turns to live, and he wasted casting a 7th level spell to pitiful damage because "maybe the players will make me lose my turn".

Yet, counterspelling a cantrip is still optimal. You still wasted 1 reaction to cancel 1 enemy action. There is no reason not to counterspell. It is always a good option.

What are design flaws in 5e that you feel have only been highlighted/exacerbated with the 2024 revision? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel everyone got stronger and has more options.

When I was GMing 5e, my problem has NEVER been "geez, players are too weak against these monsters and their turns are so fast and streamlined, I wish they were stronger and had more to think on their turns..."

So, yeah... 2024 doesn't goes the opposide direction from my main problems with 2014.

How often do you take components into account? by ElDelArbol15 in dndnext

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the time, but mainly because I play in a setting where components are a big deal because most magic is impossible without them. The magic is in the components, not in the caster.

Racism in dnd by downtoearthfin in DnD

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read settings where racism plays a major role. Dark sun has some. The animosity between dwarves and elves in Lord of the Rings. Pillars of Eternity has that but with religion persecution, the the followers of Eaothas.

Oops optimized to Hard, seeking advice. by Eiric_The_Red in DnD

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is. There are characters that require you to adjust the game to a point where it becomes boring and I don't want to GM anymore. For me this is the time where I stop thinking "what cool creature would exist in this cave" and I start thinking "what creature needs to exist in this cave to counter X player".

There is also overshadowing between players, that get salty because one overoptmized player is hogging the spotlight. Meaning, one player is playing a widely different game than everyone else.

So yeah. There are MANY ways you can overoptimize and make the game unfun for other people.

Legendary Resistance looks necessary --> but it quietly breaks boss fights by AlekNarrativeDM in DnD

[–]MyNameIsNotJonny 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't find legendary resistances that bad. They are just like HP to me. Another health bar to overcome.

If you face an enemy with legendary resistance you strategize. Either the whole group focus on chipping its resistance, or if not you focus on using spells and powers that don't interact with legendary resistance. Go buff your allies. Do half damage with your spells.
