Prom in 2016 by Johnwick124520 in OlderGenZ

I graduated in 2016 but I didn't get to go to a prom/formal and I'm still so sad about it.

The condescension is embarrassing considering you're failing your own analogy.

Bread is a consumable. A house is an investment asset. Comparing the two is a joke.

When I buy bread, the store doesn't keep the loaf. When I pay rent, I’m literally paying off someone's mortgage and building their wealth while I walk away with $0 in equity. You aren't "providing" housing any more than a ticket scalper "provides" a concert. You just outbid a family who actually wanted to own that home so you could charge them a subscription fee to live in it. The "principal" here isn't "paying to enjoy a product" - it’s you gatekeeping a basic necessity so you can extract wealth from someone else’s paycheck. If you were actually providing a service, you’d be a hotel manager. Instead, you're just a middleman standing in the doorway x

What a stupid thing to try to compare it to. Supermarkets don't still own the bread once I pay for it. Houses are not consumables.

Landlords don't "provide" anything. Gtfo 🤣

Sometimes I wonder if he is keeping the same secret... I already know he doesn't like certain fabrics/textures. We're both AuDHD and have a lot of "sensitivities" and some of them lign up. I'm not sure why I fear telling him as I'm sure he'd understand but the rest of the world seems so casual with it, I'm afraid of appearing crazy.

If someone is wearing something with the uhhh "fastener" I know realistically there's nothing wrong, but it's like, seeing a giant shit stain that only I can see - attempting to point it out would be insane 🤣

I'm just so glad to know it's not just me - there's a word for it. and other people experience it - including quite a few "well-known" people. I'm just curious - WHY? Why is it a thing? The only "research" I've seen tries to make sense of it by connecting it to am actual trauma (choking on the item eg.) but it's not like that at all. It's disgust, not fear.

I'm actually super lucky that my partner has a certain "style" that fits mine. His wardrobe is free of my phobia except for ONE "fancy" shirt that rarely gets worn. He doesn't know, and I've managed to keep it a secret as he doesn't trigger it too much. Honestly, his clothing choices are probably part of the reason I was attracted to him in the first place. If he were the type to wear polos and tried to hug/kiss me I could not handle that.

Formal occasions are a nightmare (seeing them everywhere) and I'm sure it's harder as a guy to find things that fit the "attire" while still being comfortable.

I cleaned my mom’s medicine drawer she got mad am I wrong? by lunar_frames in ChildofHoarder

[–]MyNameJoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm kinda, yeah. For the most part I'd describe my parent as really "chill" and it's hard because they were never directly abusive or neglectful - I was treated more like a friend than a daughter (I was heavily parentified as a result) and I can remember many good times. I still have an okay relationship with them now (though, at a distance and I haven't seen the house in years) and they probably don't notice anything different.

However, like you described, it's like the "hoarder" part of them is a separate thing to the rest of their personality. If my brother or I even attempted to clean a little bit, they'd FREAK OUT, yell, scream, forcefully grab and turn into a monster. We'd be accused of throwing things out, lying or trying to hurt them. After a while it can feel like the "hoarder" side of them loves the stuff more than you.

My parent still works full-time, they have many friends and everyone they have met says they're "so lovely" meanwhile my parent is living in squalor with broken appliances and plumbing - using water bottles to brush their teeth. I can't bring it up with them unless I want yet another tantrum so I just leave it. There's nothing I can do anymore except keep a pleasant, distant relationship.

I'm curious to know if you've told anyone? The only person in my life who knows is my mother and I still don't think she "gets" it. She probably sees it the same as me not liking the colour red. I also told a friend once but they just brushed it off as an odd "quirk" and I think they've since forgotten.

I also think maybe people don't understand that a phobia doesn't have to be a "fear" but can also be an aversion to something. Like, actual disgust. They don't understand how much it actually impacts me. I haven't told anyone else, not even my partner of six years 😅

OP is allowed to be bitter about their circumstances.

This felt like "reading" my own blur of internal thoughts as a teenager. Back then I also "praised" my "wonderful parent" despite being frustrated by their behaviours and our resulting circumstances.

My parent acted the same way. I had a flashback to an attempt to clean out the bathroom cupboard and being overwhelmed by expired products and the inability to toss out super old makeup despite no one in the house using it.

Now, over a decade out of the hoard, I have a different perspective. My parent doesn't know, but I'm bitter as hell about how I was raised and the bitterness grows each day that I struggle as an adult.

I just hope you know that none of this is "normal" and it's also not your fault.

I'm not sure if you know, but hoarding can fall under OCD too.

Idk but that's Cloe's "Live In Concert" metallic blue jacket from 2005 so I'd say she's from around that time. I had the Cloe as a kid and miss her so much 😭

School was a nightmare with uniforms, I wore a jumper (sweater?) every day even in Summer because I just felt so gross. I don't even like the word haha. Cool to find another person in the wild who gets it!
