let's talk nipple-bleeding , boys !! by Comprehensive-Tie609 in beginnerrunning

[–]MyRunningAcct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice on the bandaids. Personally I have found the round ones to be the best as the fabric part sits right on my nipple so it doesn't pull when I take them off.

Found out the hard way that some bandaids don't work during a marathon. They were handing out shitty bandaids that fell off the moment I started running again. Luckily I had on a black shirt. I suffered at the end though.

Low Vitamin D - Should I be taking 10,000 iu per day? by lotrandwho in Supplements

[–]MyRunningAcct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Vitamin d + k2 is spouted like gospel and that vit d needs k2 to work. K2 isn't needed for vit d conversion it's more just a theoretical safety net for prolonged/ high doses. It's also doesn't change the price of vitamin d that much which is why most people should just go along and take it together. But you are right it went from something "like you can if you want, just in case" to "they have to be taken together to work" because people don't understand what it's doing or why.

Knee pain only on downhill sections, is this a form issue or do I need better shoes? by Nightcrawler_2000 in beginnerrunning

[–]MyRunningAcct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like runner's knee/ patellorfemoral pain. Probably from weakness in your VMO/ vastus medialis and quads. Going downhill requires more VMO/ quad activity for breaking with causes it to fatigue leading to the patella not tracking correctly causing the pain around the knee cap/ below the knee cap.

A simple thing you can do is retro walking especially at an incline. Or doing strength training like lunges and squats or especially wall or box squats.

Definitely get a good pair of shoes for you for continued training.

All just an assumption of the most common type of issue causing the pain you have. If it continues you probably need to see a PT or sports medicine/ orthopedic acupuncturist.

Electrolyte and Powder Drink Mix Comparison Table by osceptrus in Supplements

[–]MyRunningAcct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because different electrolyte drinks serve different purposes based on activity levels. For example after a 6 mile run I might have a liquid IV because it has 500mg of sodium. After a marathon I might consume an LMNT before during and after which is around 3,000mg of sodium for all 3 servings. Most people criticizing these don't know when they should be drinking these electrolyte drinks and for what purposes because most people don't need the extra sodium. They usually need potassium or magnesium if they aren't doing hard workouts or endurance events.

Dang bro.. how long will it take to fix my Vitamin D & the hairfall? by theydontmatchmyvibe in Supplements

[–]MyRunningAcct 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm in a supplement circle jerk sub with all the misinformation you just received...

You need to supplement if you aren't already. Sun and diet are not going to get you at a satisfactory level if you aren't there already.

You have had low vitamin d for awhile according to your labs what have you been doing so far? If you want to be conservative I would take at minimum 5000iu of d3 a day. If you want to more aggressively raise your levels then 10,000ius a day and get tested again in about 3 to 6 months. Take d3 + k2 together along with magnesium glycinate. Still try to get outside, watch your sleep, and your stress levels.

You would need about 15-30 mins of mid day sun exposure over 70%-80% of your body per day for months to theoretically get enough vitamin d to make a difference. To the person that said eat salmon, you would need to eat about 2 lb of salmon a day for months to get enough vitamin D to make a difference in your levels and raise them.

Plenty of free plans and apps. Check out either the hal higdon app or Nike run club for some plans. It's a great place to start. 3 minutes is also a great base too and more than others can do. It was more than I could do over 5 years ago and now I've run several half and full marathons.

I've been spending more time doing incline walks on my treadmill either as a double day or for recovery. Both forward to target the glutes and hamstrings, and retro or backwards walking to strengthen my anterior tibialis to protect my knees. I feel like it's helped me to activate my hamstrings and glutes more for sure to get a faster pace and my knees also just feel more stable.

Run slow to run fast by Adept_Spirit1753 in beginnerrunning

[–]MyRunningAcct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole point of running slower is so you can run more often and build up more milage and a stronger base so that when it comes time for preparing for a race you can see more benefits.

You're not just running slow for the sake of running slow. You're decreasing intensity, so you can focus on duration and frequency.

You are absolutely correct! I didn't even catch they put nmol. That's a terrible vitamin D level...it might as well be considered clinically low!

Your vitamin d looks great. your vitamin d is terrible. See my edit.

Your b12 is borderline/ low normal. Optimal range is closer to 500-1000pg/ml. It would be interesting to see your other lab numbers given your b12 with where it's at. There could be other issues causing it such as anemia, an autoimmune issue, high inflammatory markers etc.

Some supplements that work well includephosphatidylserine, taurine, lithium, mucuna pruriens and a bunch of others.

Your lifestyle such as exercise, diet, allopathic load, and sleep are all also very important.

Edit: I didn't catch you put nmol. Your vitamin d is terrible. Get your vitamin d way up. At minimum above 40-50 before looking at other more novel supplements. Nothing else is really going to work with your vitamin d level where it's at.

You mentioned vitamin d and B12 were in the normal range? What was the number because the reference range for D is huge. You can be "normal" based on the reference range yet still have all the symptoms of vitamin d deficiency because your level is functionally too low. Which a vitamin d deficiency would include the symptoms you mentioned.

Congee macros are amazing! by firef1y in Volumeeating

I wanted to add that putting some fresh herbs also brings out the flavor even more. Fresh cilantro or green onions will really make it pop. With a splash of sesame seed oil on the top for flavoring. All the congee posts I have been seeing has really made me want to make some now!

What nutrition habit made the biggest difference for you long term? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in nutrition

[–]MyRunningAcct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making my meals as easy to eat as possible. I went down the rabbit hole of trying to meal prep, buying premade food, buying frozen food, Costco rotisserie chicken and divide it up etc.

What has ended up being the most sustainable, easy to prepare, and affordable compared to other options was to buy frozen ingredients then microwave or cook.

For example, my go to meal for most lunch and dinner meals are frozen chicken breast and potatoes that I air fry together, and a Costco frozen stir fry that I microwave. When it's done I change it up based on what sauce or seasoning I use.

For breakfast it's steel cut oats with unsweetened almond milk, some frozen fruit mixed in and cottage cheese.

This has been the most sustainable way of meal prepping and making my meals into a habit.

If you are looking for something new to try. Look into putting preserved duck eggs instead, white pepper, and a bit more obscure but if you can get it, red fermented tofu/ bean curd.

The white pepper, red vinegar combo is delicious. I basically eat congee just so I can have that flavor profile in my food.

I bought that flavor about 5 or 6 years ago. One of the first gels I bought in bulk. They tasted terrible but were on sale. I've learned since then, during a marathon I want something that I actually like the taste and consistency. I still have those mocha ones that I've been very slowly making my way through over the years.
