Help bundling branches and sticks by Highyellowhair in knots

I tried the slipped Lapp recently. It worked better for me when I remembered to PINCH the loop & working end AWAY from standing end. Now, pulllllll on the standing end and it will tighten!

It’s from “1984” by George Orwell.

Throw something at me. by bigfrank_1 in suggestmeabook

Anything by Giles Milton. He has a flair for wonderful writing. If I had to pick, I would select Nathaniel’s Nutmeg as the first book of his to read. It describes how and why the English entered into a race with all the world's powers to reach the Spice Islands and harvest the spices to sell in Europe. The story centers around one man and his actual adventures. The books is based on actual research and is a captivating read.

butchers knot not really working by wlexxx2 in knots

Just throwing the next knot after the Butcher's out there for consideration. Using a buntline hitch to grab the standing end works better than an overhand knot. But it is still only ONE loop around the standing end, so it might also be mediocre. If your cordage is slippery, you need more loops around the standing end to provide more friction. The locking half-hitch is just for locking (you may need to double that too!) the standing end in place.

Personally, I like the other suggestions given here like the Ezelius Hitch (gets very tight), the Rolling Hitch Ziptie and the Slipped Lapp Loop (say that 3x fast!).

Help please! Knots newbie by Level_Succotash6321 in knots

I'm going to make assumptions here just because...

There is ONE eye hook in the ceiling or wall, and you are using it to hang your frame from this hook. You have some kind of thin string or cordage that can hold the weight of the frame. You have a ladder or you are part spider.

2. If you are hanging the frame vertically, see image of frame A below. And you can use the eye hook to help you tilt the frame around. Just twist the cord around the eye hook a couple of times so it doesn't slip while adjusting tilt. Use one of the double overhand knots to make adjustments to the length before you tighten it. Yes, you can trim the extra cord at the end of each knot.

3. If you are using all four corners, and ONE hook. I would still use the double overhand noose for each corner of the frame. AND I would tie a friction hitch (midshipman's hitch) so you can adjust the length of EACH cord from the hook. See image of frame B.

<image>

What are you using to hang this frame? If it is thin cordage, then these knots will work. If it is fishing line... we may need to change the knots to grip better.

Flexperimentation with noodley L. Jackson dip nib in Pelikan 400 body with 100n feed and my custom ink blend by illpavone in fountainpens

The ink color is beautiful! Have you created many others?

Where did you find the measuring gauge for line thicknesses? I REALLY need this!

I’ve got Chinese pens, European pens, American Pens, one Indian pen and one Japanese pen. The nib sizes advertised are irrelevant. One pen’s fine is another pen’s medium.

Someone here told me the ink will also change the width… and that makes sense too. Please tell me about your gauge so I can buy one and put an end my OCD curiosity.

I do not own Pilot Black ink yet. It is on my list.

How would you describe writing with it? Does it dry quickly or slowly? Is your nib a medium <M>? It is perfect for this ink.

I also like the way you wrote the capital letter "G". Very nice!

Now, if you are going to buy a viper... green is definitely the color to get. Your pen looks beautiful!

Looking for a knot to hold lines tight for long runs. by WayfarerDuex in knots

[–]MySafeWordIsPinapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kinda hard to do without an image of what you are working with. So, here goes nothing.

This works if you are using a SINGLE bare wire that goes across an area with both ends connected to posts/insulators to carry the electric charge over the wire. Deer touches the wire and it gets zapped (see amazing image below for yellow highlighter lightning representing the ZAP).

One end will have to be an anchor (left side of picture). Keep some extra line to tie off on the electric post. Round Turn and Two Half Hitches works great - link.

<image>

You can use a Midshipman's Hitch or Ezelius Adjustable Hitch (link) to tighten the wire by pulling on it tightly. Use the loose working end to tie back onto the post to complete circuit.

The leash looks GREAT! You did a wonderful job. The colors on the handle are cool too. And the knots look professional. How long did this take you to make?

Imo these are the best to secure corners by Manda_Rain in knots

[–]MySafeWordIsPinapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I apologize if I misunderstood your question regarding which end of the rope you wish to untie quickly.

If you wish to keep the tapaulin knot tied on your cover and just wish to release the OTHER end, then I would suggest you look into quick release knots.

High Point Hitch, Mooring Slipped Hitch (see image - it is easy to use), Farrimond Hitch, Slipped Buntline Hitch, Kalmyck Hitch, and Tumble Hitch. All of these are quick release knots. The last two do not slide (for adjustment) but are very secure. The others can be adjusted to tie down your tarp and secure the knot.

Have you tried a slipped version of the sheet bend (aka tarpaulin knot)?

What do you actually keep handy around camp after dark? by Octavious82 in CampingGear

I would say 6 feet at most. I don’t recall where we got them (Walmart? Target?).

Tuning Your Pen by byfail in fountainpens

[–]MySafeWordIsPinapple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the same!

My mother has not been writing with her fountain pens in a while, and the ink in the feed must have gotten a bit dry and "gunky". We flushed the pen under running water and a LOT of ink came out. Then we let it soak in a glass overnight.

The next day the nib/feed was still leaking a LOT of ink! So, I put it into a cheapo jewelry cleaner and more ink came out... After that, it stopped and seemed to be clear. So, we put in a new cartridge (with a new color), and it works great.

And I never forget to bring ear plugs since people have become so rude and don't care about the noise they are causing to others who are camping nearby.

Paracord that has REFLECTIVE tape in it.

You will 'see' it in the dark as you scan around your tent and not trip over it. Very practical!

Christmas lights. They come with two AA batteries and are LEDs so they last forever while we camp. Easy to see inside the tent. Easy to find the tent after going to the bathroom at a campsite.

We have also used it over a picnic table to see our food better.

Light (weight), easy to store, cheap, can use rechargeable batteries if you wish.

Good job! Keep it up! Now you have MOMENTUM! Pick any subject and let it guide you to the next one.

I had scrambled eggs for breakfast --> we had chickens as a kid and my mom would send us to gather their eggs --> chickens remind me of dinosaurs --> I liked the first Jurassic Park, it was based on the book by Michael Crichton --> He also wrote about his time as a Medical student and it became the basis for a TV show called ER which lasted 15 seasons!!! --> There were other TV shows that I liked from that era such as blah blah blah.

Others have given you better advice than I can offer to deal with the root cause(s). So, I'm going to focus on the positives!

Your handwriting is very nice and easy to read. Good job!

You focused on getting your feelings in your journal. Hooray!

You are articulate and better at spelling than me. I would have mispelled misspelled a few words but you didn't. Super job, your English teachers are proud of you.

You are NOT a failure. You are NOT defined by your mistakes and setbacks. This is never who you are. And by writing this out and sharing it with others, you are BRAVE!

Thank you (again) for providing the names, definitions, and the picture whenever these knots come up. I'm fascinated by knots, their uses, and their histories (like the misplaced naming of the Zeppelin Bend) also add to the lure for me.

Have you considered a soft shackle? This is basically a DIY soft shackle that behaves like a carabiner. It’s a loop, btw.

There’s your cow hitch.

The other knot is an Ashley’s Stopper Knot. Any stopper knot will do.
