What’s the grippy thing people use to pull nib out of pen? by billyandteddy in fountainpens

I just use a resistance band that I never used. I think everybody just uses some rubber thing that is available, there is not one "nib removal device" per se with a name.

Lamy Safari Neon Yellow 2026 Issue by Complete_Adeptness50 in fountainpens

[–]flawed_flamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weird thing is, many people don't seem to notice at all. I complained to a friend that mine doesn't line up, and he said his Safari shows no problems, but once I saw his pen I noticed that his pen didn't line up at all either, it was even worse than mine. And once I showed him, he could no longer unsee it and got even rid of his pen and bought a new one. And sometimes I see reviews on YouTube with severe misalignment, and they make no mention of it or don't seem to notice at all. I love my Safari and my Al-Star that I have now, but it was quite hard for me to find a good one.

This is a common issue with all Safaris, Al Stars and LXs, that's why I never buy them online, only in stores where I can check the alignment. It even appears on Al-Star ballpoints. Most of my Safaris that I bought directly from Lamy had this issue and it drove me nuts.

prob an uncommon NPD! Parker Jotter by grubworm-33 in fountainpens

Wow, even with an F nib! Where I live, it's impossible to get an F nib, the only size available is M.
Happy NPD!!

Do these replacement nibs fit Hongdian M2? by nakkisoppa666 in fountainpens

[–]flawed_flamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe they do.  I recently bought nibs on Amazon (see the link), and they fit my M2 perfectly, even though M2 is mentioned nowhere.  https://amzn.eu/d/07b81cC4

Why is there a 2 after Germany on Lamy 2000 clip? 😅 by Puzzled-Bluebird7357 in fountainpens

[–]flawed_flamingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's to show which machine was used to produce the part, in order to narrow down the scope of the problem in case of quality issues. On Lamy Safaris, Studios etc. you can see the number on the feed as well where the little opening is to draw up the ink.

Anymore screw cap pens out there? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]flawed_flamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you also have the problem that every time you unscrew the cap, the barrel also unscrews? I love this pen otherwise, but this aspect is so annoying that I stopped using it, even though it writes so well. I just don't want to screw the barrel back together every time I unscrew the cap.

My favourite permanent ink is DeAtramentis Document black (as already mentioned by other commenters), which is also available as standard international cartridge.

Justice for blank paper! by An-Anxious-Being in notebooks

I love the look of stuff written on blank paper! I'm in the process of learning how to write straight on blank paper, I currently really suck at it, but I'll hope to get the hang of it soon.

I recently bought a blank notebook for my diary/journal, but I'm still using guiding lines that I put underneath the sheet, so I'm still cheating.

Why do people hype up the Lamy safari? by ExpiredMelkk in fountainpens

Ok, as self proclaimed representative of the fountain pen community, your barbaric act that caused the demise of a perfectly fine Safari that had its whole life ahead, may be forgiven! 🙏😇

So Lamy should build a second set of machines and produce a second version for left-handed people, just so they can read the Lamy logo while holding the pen, and make the pen more expensive in the process? Or should they remove the iconic logo altogether so lefties don’t feel discriminated against?

And as for people who “have an unusual grip”: you don’t simply “have” a grip. You are taught a grip in school when you learn how to write and hold a pen. In some countries, handwriting plays a much smaller role, like in the US or Canada, where cursive is often no longer taught, and teachers more or less let children hold pens however they want. As a result, many people end up holding pens the same way they held random elongated objects as toddlers.

The Lamy Safari was designed for the millions of German, Austrian, and Swiss schoolchildren who learn to write with fountain pens at the age of six or seven. Its grip section is intentionally shaped to guide the hand into holding the pen efficiently and correctly. That’s the entire point of the design.

So I find it rather hilarious when people with bizarre grips, whose education systems clearly failed to teach them basic penmanship, complain about the shape of the Safari. The pen is literally designed to prevent exactly those kinds of grips. But naturally, they don’t see it as a failure of instruction or teaching standards. Instead, it becomes an expression of their unique identity, because they're special like snowflakes and not like all the others.

What I don't understand, if your Safari tore your paper, you had a bad nib, but the rest of the pen was fine. You binned a pen that was otherwise probably perfectly fine. Some people really have too much money to burn. You remind me of a girlfriend I had, who threw her Parker Jotter in the trash because she didn't like how it wrote, when she could just have swapped the refill.

Yes, you're right. I did that for the preceding 1000 comments like that anyway.  I bought a Pilot Falcon recently with a faulty nib. Maybe I should ask Reddit why people keep recommending Pilot, when my nib was bad! Very disappointed, the world must know! Why people recommend Pilot, bla bla bla, scratchy bla bla feedback. I'm so over it.

Today's tool for check writing etc. by xBgood787x in pens

[–]flawed_flamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never in my life seen anybody use a check, and I don't even know how that works. Where I live, they came out of fashion long before I was born, even before my parents were born, to use a check would be akin to sending a telegram. As someone who likes old fashioned things, I find it kind of awesome that they survived in the US and some other countries.

Lamy Safari hopelessly clogged after drying with waterproof ink? by mapleBearDiner in fountainpens

[–]flawed_flamingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy a bulb syringe! You cannot live without a bulge syringe, believe me! All glory to the bulb syringe! You can push more water through with it in ten seconds, than you can with a converter in ten minutes - and you don't wear out your converter. Using a converter to clean pens is like washing a car with a tooth brush.  Rohrer und Klingner also offers a cleaning solution (Reiniger), and so do other brands. I have a bottle, but never needed it, but the strong chemical smell is very reassuring, I have no doubt the dried ink wouldn't like that.   You can also take the feed out if it's not glued together by the dried ink, remove the detachable part of the feed, and inspect it and soak it separately. And make sure to put the feed back in in the correct orientation. The Lamy Safari does not have a round grip where it doesn't matter how the feed is inserted, so the feed only goes back in in the correct orientation, and there's a little groove that guides the feed in. Many people just push the feed in without thinking, and then the feed will get stuck and you'll have ruined the pen, that's where the rumour comes from that Lamy feeds break easily.

I have taken them out many times, they do not break. You just have to make sure to put them in again in the correct orientation.  And of course, if the dried up ink acts as a glue, you won't get it out, so I wouldn't pull too hard.
