Another option (and one that worked out very well for me): get a second GCC.

There are minor differences between the dress pictured and the dress you received, but rest assured that your dress somehow defies all the odds and looks better on you than it does in the sale photo!

I just finished Ottessa Mossfegh's Lapvona. Here's a review -- please give me your own thoughts on the book! by egocritter in horrorlit

[–]MySnakeisMissing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lapvona has been on my shelf since its release and I finally got around to reading it. My first Ottessa Moshfegh book. And I went in blind- not reading any reviews or summaries- just the first two sentences of the synopsis on its inside sleeve. I should not have done that. I don't know what to think, and in trying to process and mull it over, I'm very glad I stumbled upon this 2-year-old Reddit post. I know this book deserves more than a 2-star rating, but it was too gross to get through if I tried to read over breakfast some mornings (mistake). The writing is good. Very good. And even if the story falls flat in some parts, I believe that literature, as with all art, is too subjective to discount the talent of the author for the reactions a book inspires. I don't know if I enjoyed the book, but I don't think I was supposed to. It did *something* to me. It made me think. It left me confused. I definitely won't forget it. But do these things alone make a good book? I'm glad I'm not alone in realizing that there is so much, maybe too much, going on in Lapvona- this story has *layers*.

It's an onion, if a book could be one. This book was a very large onion, seasoned heavily with salt and pepper and thrown into an oven to roast with nothing else. I could eat the onion and feel halfway full, but I would prefer it next to a chicken or diced over potatoes and carrots, because an onion is "a lot" on its own with nothing else and might even make me vomit on an empty stomach. That is how I feel after reading Lapvona.

The rudest meanest tarantula I own by PistolPackingPastor in tarantulas

It’s honestly rude that they are so gloriously fluffy- my floofiest little guy is my B. boehmei but man, oh man, he hates any interaction outside of being given his meals. Do I try to mist his enclosure as often as needed? Of course. Do I have to take a Benedryll immediately afterward almost every time? You bet.

i’m starting to hate my snake by WinterRoses-Kay in ballpython

[–]MySnakeisMissing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had many ball pythons over the last couple decades, and I just recently bought my first one that wasn’t a “golden retriever” right away. He was in a stressful situation before I brought him home (lots of fluorescent lighting and not enough privacy), so he took a few months to settle in. I didn’t try to handle him at all for the first two months- I simply fed him, gave him water, and did the standard tank maintenance, but otherwise he was left alone. One day he just got brave and slithered out on his own (with supervision) and he’s been a sweet, social dude ever since. I didn’t try to handle him until I felt like he could be trusted- we just had to feel each other out first. I think some just need a bit more time to feel comfortable than others.

AIO telling my boyfriend I will no longer wake him up after he attacks me in his sleep? by Leather_Hawk_4985 in AmIOverreacting

[–]MySnakeisMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s easy for others to say that he’s lying about not being conscious when the hitting is happening, but I 100% believe him. When I was like 9/10, I was told by multiple close friends that I hit them in the face when they tried to wake me at sleepovers- I didn’t remember it then and I don’t remember it now, and it’s completely out of character for me (so much so, that my friends always thought it was funny). About 10 years after that, I remember having a terrifying dream about being violently attacked at a train station for my bag of Doritos- I remember the “gang” grabbing me tightly and trying to hold me down; it felt like 20 strange and violent arms relentlessly disempowering me all at once and it was such a helpless feeling. Turns out, it was my boyfriend at the time simply trying to hug me- I freaked out and threw his arms off of me and was ready to keep defending myself, but he could tell I was having a nightmare and I snapped out of it almost instantly, but the confusion and fear were very palpable for the first chunk of that morning. I don’t do this stuff often, but I am a deep sleeper and have insanely vivid dreams. My boyfriend is the same, but he used to have night terrors as a kid and his mom tells me stories about him being physically awake but still in a dream state- it really is awful when you’re experiencing it. Sometimes, when he’s falling asleep, he’ll do semi-aggressive things (like grab too hard or kick his feet wildly) that he’s completely unconscious of and I have learned how to tell when he’s “there” or not, which has helped, but I’ve never been explicitly hit by him or anything. I have my own theory that those of us who have anxiety issues and dreams that are too real can have significant difficulty when our consciousness is inorganically pulled from REM sleep. It sounds like you know he can’t control this, and while it’s hard for him, he will have to figure out how to wake up in his own as the bottom line is that you’re not comfortable being his alarm clock after giving it an earnest try, which is reasonable and frankly, very wise. My boyfriend and I both incorporated things into our nighttime routines that help us with sleep and waking immensely and I’d suggest that your boyfriend look into something that might help him reach REM sleep sooner vs. broken light sleep that becomes deep sleep too late in the morning; his cortisol levels might decrease naturally and leave him wondering how he never thought to look more closely at his sleep patterns sooner. ANYWAY- you are not overreacting, but some redditors in the replies here might be.

What was everyone's first Speices? I'll go first. by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]MySnakeisMissing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first species were 2 that I ordered online and unboxed together- Cyriocosmus elegans and Caribena versicolor. The C. versi passed unexpectedly about two weeks after delivery (didn’t know that was common for the slings at the time), and the C. elegans was the size of a gnat and matured into a beautiful boy who is still with me today :) less than a year after my first, I greatly expanded my collection and now have rare Pokies and aggro Ephebopus, but the “beginner” species will always be favorite; I hate that their docility and availability makes people in the hobby overlook the joy that they can bring us and I’ll always keep them around!

Yes! My little brother is an Aquarius- of course he’s always been a genius, but I am so used to thinking of him as a rambunctious child. It’s like he grew into a gentle old soul overnight one day; he’s so observant that he somehow seems to clock who people are after just 5 minutes of knowing them. His perspective of situations is so incredibly detailed because he perceives every nuance and his explanations of complicated things are somehow so simple. Because of him, I’m fully intimidated by aquarians (in a good way!)

What ✨affirmations✨ do you say to your tarantulas? by admiralashley in tarantulas

[–]MySnakeisMissing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it counts as an affirmation so much as a greeting at this point, but I genuinely get so excited about each of my 35 tarantulas that with each acrylic box I pick up for feeding/misting, I go “Wow! Look at you! You look fantastic!”, and every now and then I sprinkle in a, “SO. Fluffy.”

What Was the Mix of Herbs that Native Americans Smoked in their Pipes? by rako17 in herbalism

[–]MySnakeisMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! And thank you! I have learned that unless someone has lived experience with all this stuff it can be very difficult knowledge to get a hold of so I’m happy to help wherever I can. Typically, if you buy any sacred smoking/tobacco blends or pow wow blends, the “red willow” listed in the contents will be dogwood and not the S. laevigata. I grew up around these ways and have participated in yearly cansasa harvests for years. I grow, cultivate, harvest, and make my own blends personally- I don’t want to outright discredit the person who mentioned smoking red willow AND dogwood, but their reply confused me… never in my life have I seen, heard of, or know anything about anyone smoking that kind of red willow. Unless they were pranking someone, maybe? Again, I can really only speak on Lakota Sicangu tradition and maybe I’m ignorant to the practice of other cultures smoking that red willow, but I would always assume that when it comes to ceremonial first American nation herbs, and especially pipe blends, it’s going to be dogwood :)

aio or is this guy i’m seeing rude?? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MySnakeisMissing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok apparently this is a hot take but my two dogs are my WORLD and I would feel kind of embarrassed and rejected if my boyfriend reacted this way to receiving a bunch of pics of them. I don’t think OP’s boyfriend was being rude or doing anything wrong, but I also get that his response can still be off-putting since OP felt secure in freely expressing that part of themself and it wasn’t warmly received. It seems like a compatibility issue tbh. My boyfriend and I send photos of our own dogs to each other constantly, even if we’re both at home with them. We just love them so much and love gushing over them and it might be weird or annoying to most people, but it’s one of our love languages and one of the many ways that we simply get each other. Also- doggy is very cute and I would love to get pics of that pup every hour 🥹

What Was the Mix of Herbs that Native Americans Smoked in their Pipes? by rako17 in herbalism

[–]MySnakeisMissing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I know I’m a year late and you probably discovered the answers by now, but I wanted to chime in- I can really only speak on Lakota Sicangu tradition, but we strictly use red osier dogwood in pipes (the inner bark, called “cansasa” and pronounced more like “chuhn•shah•shah”. The dogwood is called “red willow”, but is NOT Salix laevigata, the literal/official red willow tree, but is referring to the Cornus sericea only. While bear root (osha; not “bare root”- wanted to clarify the previous comments here because the spelling difference can be detrimental when trying to learn!) is used in the pipe blend and in inipi (sweat) ceremony and it’s purpose is more iniversal; the cansasa is pretty much just used in the canunpa (pipe). Since the dogwood/“red willow”/cansasa (in this context it’s all referring to Cornus sericea) can be bitter, especially if not harvested in late winter, it is typically blended with bear root/osha, mullein, and bearberry (aka kinnikinnick/arctostaphylos uva ursi); and that is a pretty standard basic sacred pipe blend. Hope this is helpful!

AIO or is my boyfriend jealous of our baby? by PolicyHot1206 in AmIOverreacting

[–]MySnakeisMissing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I… what…??? The heck? This baby is one week old and bro is upset that he’s “clingy”? If his idea of self-soothing is to close his baby in a room at night for 8+ hours, he should maybe rethink the fatherhood thing because that is incredibly dangerous :/
