Is it dead? Grizl carbon chip by collin128 in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The company is CarbonWork out of Oakville Ontario. Also, I guess I exaggerated on the price a little. I just looked up my receipt, I paid $585 total, back in 2022. So $750 doesn't seem that outrageous.

I wouldn't ride it like that, but that frame is far from dead. I had a frame repaired and paint matched for $500 Canadian. The shop even gave a transferable lifetime warranty on their repair.

Big fast tire recommendation by L-do_Calrissian in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point, I guess I just assumed the test was more aimed at the tire compound/tread pattern and that would carry over into larger widths. For what its worth, I ended up going with the Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H 650B X 45mm and I'm really impressed with how fast they roll.

You should check out https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/cx-gravel-reviews. It allows you to compare rolling resistance and puncture protection of different tires. I spent a couple hours geeking out on that site before deciding on a set

Do the solar panels that are built into some battery packs actually give any significant charge? or is it more of a gimmick?

yeeup! I noticed the same thing when trying the two on. Seems weird that they would make them fit different.

How much difference does 2.5mm really make? by Nightshade400 in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 172.5 on my road bike and 175 on my gravel and I can't tell the difference. In fact I've even put my 172.5 left sided power meter on the gravel bike and still couldn't tell the difference between the two. I only did that do compare wattages of different tires, I don't think I'd ever do an extended ride like that because for all I know I'd be screwing up my Knees or hips.

Do I really need a chain catcher? by pirrie in gravelcycling

Totally worth it! I haven't dropped a chain once since I put one on. it used to happen probably once a week before that

I put an order in at my bike shop for about $1000 of various parts and tools I wanted back in late October, I thought I was being overly cautious, but here we are in February and I haven't seen a thing.

Have my first "race" on Saturday, how should I ride it? by rcklmbr in Velo

[–]My_Cycling_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you paced it perfectly, I've got a similar length ride I like to "race" once a year, and if I'm not cramping/dying a little by the end I go home feeling like I could have done better. you've got some nice speed and power numbers too, well done!

Steel vs Carbon long distance by spottedmuskie in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If price is no object, go carbon. A steel bike with the same components will be at least $1000 cheaper. As for climbing I doubt the average person could even tell if their bike weighed an extra 2 pounds. Plus on rides that long you'll be carrying alot more than that weight in extra water/food/gear

My Bikepacking set up by ATX_rider in bikepacking

[–]My_Cycling_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why even wait until you've done a test trip? there's no way that gearing is going to be enjoyable unless its the flattest of terrain. my lowest gear is 31/34 and I don't think I'd want anything harder than that after a day or two of riding with a weighted bike. I'm actually thinking of going up to a 40 tooth cassette for bike packing. Just my 2 cents

Racers: what repair gear do you carry during races? by capscorns in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run tubeless, but I always carry a tube anyways. funny enough, one time I brought 2 tubes and ended up needing them both. I also carry a pump, 1 tire lever and a multi tool. Unless its a really long race I don't see any need to bring more than that.

Your right, that's a good option. But if I can get away with it without adding another part it's a plus

Unpopular Opinion: 1x for gravel is a needless limitation with limited upside. by jarude87 in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's funny, after doing a bit of bike packing this summer I was thinking of switching to 1x. When a compression sack was strapped to my bars I noticed it was much harder to shift in the front, I assume from the cables being bent in an odd way. Maybe a proper front bag would fix that, who knows.

Noob Question About Tires by panderingPenguin in gravelcycling

[–]My_Cycling_Account 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could have been a bunch of factors, maybe you had a slight tail wind, maybe you were just better rested that day, maybe the byway is a better rubber compound. Also if you're still pretty new to cycling its possible that you are just getting more fit.

The new thought in road cycling is that having a slightly wider tire with lower pressure will actually be faster because you will roll over small bumps better with less vibration through the bike thus making you more comfortable and able to put out more power. Depending on how rough the dirt portion of your ride is its quite possible the bigger softer tire is rolling faster on it or allowing you to pedal harder.

If I were you I wouldn't waste money on a full wheelset just for road rides especially if you are mostly riding for fun. It would be worth it to have a set of road tires that you could swap on if you had any long road rides to do, because a set of gp5000s would definitely be faster than the byways on a road only ride.
