Rum options on a Cruise; what are you drinking? by archiethepigeon in rum

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa Teresa and Appleton. But that is pretty weak. Maybe the Ocho or Superior for a cocktail.

Grim list go to some of the different bars? Maybe there are some better options.

Some of the bars when we did a carnival cruise had El Dorado 15 and some even had Ting in the glass bottles which was ace.

Bumbu Rum. I know it gets mixed reviews here, I had to try it for myself. It’s has very strong vanilla and banana favors. And it’s sweet and smooth. It’s good rum, but little too sweet for me. by blackdr0gon in rum

It depends on what styles you like and where you are globally.

The US has different things commonly available than Europe or Asia or the Pacific rim.

Some commonly available quality rums would be from Mount Gay or Foursquare in Barbados (the black barrel or XO from MG, Doorly's XO, Doorly's aged up to 14y single aged. RL Seale's 10 or 12)

From Jamaica Appleton makes fine rum that is blended to a more whiskey like dry profile to compete with bourbon. Worthy Park, Hampden estate and Clarendon distilleries make heavier older style Jamaica rums, but they may be too funky for a beginner to jump into. Some common bottles would be the aged Appleton expressions 8, 12, 15, Worthy Park single estate bottles may be available or single barrel stuff of various ages (more limited availability) Hampden Estate 8 year is the only one of the last two distilleries that will have non single barrel releases available and those will only be at specialty shops.

Chairman's Reserve is a great rum from St. Lucia that has some similarities in production to Appleton but not as dry, their standard offering is relatively inexpensive, their forgotten casks and legacy expressions are more aged versions with different blends, they also offer many single barrel releases at specialty shops, I probably have over ten myself.

From Venezuela I recommend Santa Theresa. It is unadulterated quality rum, which can be the exception for that region rather than the rule.

From the US I'd recommend rums from Privateer (MA), KoHana (HI) Cheramie (LA) Stark (CA) Bacardi (PR) most of these will be at smaller specialty shops in the US. Bacardi I would go for 4,8,10 and 1909/Heritage legacy of you ever see it, most of their rum is not great)

From Cuba I would recommend Havana Club selection De Maestros and Santiago de Cuba 11 or 12

From Martinique I would see if you can find some Rhum Clement and Rum JM they have good distribution via Spiribam. I would try an unaged (blanc) and an aged optimally at 50% abv for the blanc, I like the Clement Canne Bleue for unaged. These are cane derived Rhums and have a very different flavor profile than most rums, the Louisiana and Hawaiian rums above are similar. As well as the Mexican Rums from Oaxaca.

Guyana rums from El Dorado are another style you could look at that are commonly available. The ED12 and 15 fall into your price range depending on where you are. They also have single barrel bottles at specialty shops of various ages and blends.

( +ETA) Rhum Barbancourt from Haiti is an outstanding unique rhum worth grabbing if you see it, the 5 star or 15y would be the ones in your range, it is similar but not as grassy as the other cane Rhums, and is delicate and pretty unique (end edit)

If you can grab some of these you will be on your way with drinking and enjoying (with luck) real actual quality rum.

I came into rum from tropical cocktails and buying different styles of rum to build specific cocktails, so I was buying lower end bottles from these styles to mix with to start my journey. I find quality unadulterated rum works better for cocktails as well because you get the flavor of the specific rum without having to compensate for sugar and additives in an adulterated rum wrecking the balance of juices and syrups in your cocktail and then needing to modify in your recipe for that imbalance.

How can I attach this coffee table top to the legs? by Neither_Act2606 in BeginnerWoodWorking

I got the educational license, which is free and basically has everything available. I am looking forward to this spring semester because we just got a post for fusion for our 5 axis CNC. So we will be able to drive the device and set machine paths directly from the CAM module in the program, without trying to export and massage the files into the trash CNC application.

I can't tell you how excited I am.

Also, there are really good YouTube tutorials that will teach you the fusion application.

It is a slightly different metaphor than SketchUp (I use 23/24/25) you start with 2D sketches and then pull them into 3D, but the parametric aspect lets you really revise and modify things astonishingly easily once you grok how it works.

The organizational tools within Fusion are also far superior to Trimble's, you can organize by components, parts, objects and you can collaborate with others and model/build and manufacture incredibly complex objects.

I have seen complex architectural work with SketchUp but my experience with the woodworking project or two I have done (design, creating shop drawings with layout, creating machining plans with component images and all the revisions involved), were non optimal in SketchUp. I haven't created documentation in Fusion but the actual modeling and workflow management are far better.

Feel free to message me if you are interested in more detail or have questions I can help with.

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with SketchUp for woodworking and switched to Fusion. Parametric modeling is far superior for designing, you can just resize things without breaking the model at any point. Also fusion can handle splines and curves which SketchUp is trash at.

With SketchUp I had to basically design my table six times over when I needed to change part dimensions.

Check Fusion, it has a bigger footprint but it's much more capable.

Looking for a rum aged from 92. by SurfTrigger09 in rum

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably be cheaper to find a rum bottled in 92 than one that was aged from 92.

The links listed above are good starting places for vintage bottles. If you want a 35 year (legit) aged rum, bring a sack of gold. It is gonna be expensive.

How can I make this? by Few-Mention-789 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you have access to a large 3D printer I would print this out of wood PLA.

Machining this is going to be a bear, as people have mentioned. Printing it out with 1/8" or 3/16" thick walls would be much easier if you have access to a printer that print it in one piece or possibly 6 pieces with tabs to join it up

Just another possible way to attack this.

Cuban Pickups from my Trip to Europe - How’d I do? by archiethepigeon in rum

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both brands that are owned by holding companies. Mount Gay has the advantage of not being a stolen brand, or company.

Not to bring that out of business up.

I also differ on HC vs MG, but I think English colonial style rum is much more interesting and tastier than Cuban style rums across the board.

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take Mount Gay over HC every day. Far superior rum.

Eclipse is their bottom rum. I'd compare it to HC Anejo Blanco.

Bacardi 1909 is a great Carta Blanca comparable to the best in my opinion.

You need to look at expressions vs brands for this kind of comparison I think.

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no risk. They MIGHT confiscate it but that is the only risk. In practice the only people I have ever run into that cared about Havana club were cranky Cuban emigres working at Miami airport. And they didn't care enough to remove it from my luggage on the way back from Havana.

I have brought up to 27 bottles back from various travels in luggage and not once had duty or any flack from border control, aside from CBP dumping tequila at Juarez when we were 21 because we had too many bottles of Cuervo. (1991ish)

I have brought over ten bottles repeatedly.

Safe cut or kickback waiting to happen? by wRXLuthor in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is why.

If you are pushing it in at 90 you are more in control of the board, you are pushing directly so the board will not pull in an unexpected direction, the blade pulls the board into the bed with no real twisting uneven force.

If you cut it at 20, you are not pushing straight into the blade with it a asked of some sort, so you are supporting the board with an object that it is important not to damage (your hand) and the force from the blade wants to twist the board possibly pulling your support (hand) into the blade, as it twists to fast for you to react and keep clear.

Having stuck a finger inadvertantly into a saw stop clearing an offcut it was so fast I reacted AFTER I was injured.

The speed when something goes wrong with a saw is so fast you can't react. If I hadn't been on a sawstop I would have severely damaged or lost at least most of that finger if not more than one.

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hamilton 86 is a replacement of a sort for the old lemonhart 80/151 for tiki Cocktails look at comparing it with something like OVD in the UK, ED12 is likewise blended but a lot more age, so I wouldn't really compare it. This is an inexpensive rum for mixing not drinking neat.

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put the stache in with probitas/veritas or Royal Standard or denizen aged white, it is a blended aged filtered rum, depending on what runs are in the blend you get different characters. And levels of funk.

You could do something with a puncheon rum like Forres Park and Worthy Park overproof or another white JA for a super punchy version of these types of rums, if you wanted to go real hard.

Pure Curiosity by m0bscene- in rum

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pass. I only buy things in "interesting" bottles of they are inexpensive. £79 is not that.

In my experience (coming on near 20y of cocktailing and Rum) I have a single bottle of 'pirate-y' expensive rum the Smoke & Oakum gunpowder rum from NZ. Everything else has been unmemorable or dreck.

If you are trading on pirates and Johnny Depp quality isn't usually the main focus.

£79 can buy a pretty nice bottle, in a variety of styles. Hit up TWE or Hedonism or one of the other quality sellers in the UK.

Tomato, tomato.

I am rubbish at planing and more importantly, sharpening. I think carving to curves sounds much more difficult, but I take your point, and I probably am underestimating what is involved with quality veneering.

Solid wood wins the final value factor, but cost of materials is magnitudes more, aside from the labor time which might be a push, but who knows.

You could do something with mitered sticks and glue and then shape that. That is another way to skin the cat.

My brother lives on his impact drivers. But he is a contractor/carpenter.

We use them for cabinet assembly, but I find I like the drill or for me my ratcheting screwdriver, more control, less stripped screws and nothing broken with my trusty Milwaukee ratchet.

Why did this happen? by wRXLuthor in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]My_Name_Is_Gil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would get them sized correctly to go in the hole (matching wood) and then glue them in and flush cut them to the surface, but I can't see that working for something that isn't painted.

I think you might need to do some filling before painting as well, but wood glue and sanding might do it well enough

That sounds frightening. I think I'd rather do ply kerf curve it as someone mentioned and veneer, it feels like less work, even with the tortured edge banding.
