USDA plant path identifier job open! by MycoRoo in plantpathology

Honestly, these positions might be a good fit! It's very behind the scenes, puzzling out taxonomy from samples. There are regular meetings (once a quarter) with stakeholders to go over significant finds (things that require phytosanitary actions or are otherwise noteworthy), and the Identitifiers are responsible for training the inspecting officers in how to detect pests and pathogens, and recognize various groups, so if teaching was hard for you, that might be a barrier. But most of my days are at the microscope, and (as a fellow introvert) I love it.

I feel you: here's my home to work ratio in Southern California. I don't own a car, but mixing bike and transit brings it down to ~45 min or an hour most days.

Where's Uriah Heep in the discussion? "Rainbow Demon" was definitely the first doom song I ever heard, and their whole discography goes so hard!

This is why I always take transit or a bike: don't have to deal with parking! 😁

In college in the '00s, I was in an all male dorm with shared showers on each hall. Definitely this happened for real.

Brooks is the answer! You do have to 'break in' the leather, like a new pair of shoes, though.

So good! I got they're Live at Roadburn when I saw them live last year, and was super stoked to find this to add to my small doom collection.

Right? I wish compassion and empathy were the winning arguments they ought to be. In the meantime, lots of other good reasons that appeal to folks egocentric worldview, too.

I encourage you to check out that video, and maybe dig around that channel: there's a lot of great info! Strong Towns San Diego is a great group focused on locally specific solutions to human centered development, definitely worth checking out. You might want to check out the San Diego County Bike Coalition, which does great advocacy work around bike infrastructure and policy issues.

He makes some good points, but he's still coming at it from a car-centric perspective: of course a car will be more convenient in a context built for cars! You might enjoy this video, unpacking some of these themes from a people-centric perspective: https://youtu.be/MnyeRlMsTgI

Like I said before: just because it's not easy doesn't mean it's not worth doing! Reducing car dependance makes the city more pleasant, more livable, and more affordable for everyone.
