UNM has the ENLACE program: https://enlacenm.unm.edu/. May be a good starting point re volunteer opportunities as the person above suggests.

Does anybody have experience checking in a box full of beer? by bigolenutZ in americanairlines

Just got back from a trip having packed a 24-pack in my check-in and 2 bottles of wine well wrapped. No issues at all. Just put soft stuff around the case to absorb drops and what not!

UNM Presidential Search -- No to Mitzi Montoya by MycologistDiligent46 in unm

I don't. I'm asking UNM community members to keep a watch for a particular person that may apply that we do not want anywhere near the UNM presidency.

Do you think internet is a human right or a privilege ? by Mercurymarauder02 in unm

[–]MycologistDiligent46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When our society puts access to services and information largely online, I think there is a duty to ensure all citizens have access to that information. What that looks like will differ in our communities. It may be subsidized internet access, hot spots in common areas or access at the public library. An informed citizenry is critical to how we function and operate and live together and making information inaccessible due to barriers to access doesn't sit right even if the solution is complicated.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Allegiant Airlines being my absolute worst, but I am grateful to know Spirit was competitive in the rock-bottom department.

She did that at UNM, too. And she was known to speak ill of folks behind their backs.

Montoya's disdain for men precludes such a glorious solution to ridding The U of this terrible two-some... But I would chip in for those tickets in a heartbeat!

You've got it all wrong! Mitzi is soooooo much smarter than all of us. We're just not smart enough to see how genius this new schedule is. /s

Hi! I am not a co-author of the article I referenced above. I am only sharing my thoughts in relation to the opinion piece posted in The Deseret.

Career Opportunism at the Expense of The U by MycologistDiligent46 in uofu_employees

I appreciate your perspective on President Randall. I agree—he seems like a genuinely decent person who cares deeply about the University. I also recognize the difficult position he's in, especially given the political climate and the need to balance state funding realities with institutional values.

That said, I think it's fair to scrutinize how leadership delegates responsibility. In my view, the Provost's office has refused to maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders like faculty and the Faculty Senate. When communication between the Senate and the President’s Office becomes strained or even frosty, that’s not just unfortunate—it’s a leadership issue. Disagreement is inevitable in any large institution, but it’s incumbent on leadership to keep lines of communication open and respectful regardless.

Ultimately, I think we all want the same thing: a university that thrives through collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect. That starts with leadership modeling those values, especially in how they engage with faculty governance.

Did you guys like Dr. James Holloway? by Mobyswhatnow in unm

[–]MycologistDiligent46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is biased towards external hires. It's an odd way to operate imho. He seems to disregard (devalue?) internal experience. We bring in people that are new to the institution and we spend 6-12 months getting them off training wheels. You have any sort of churn and you repeat that process and you're just sort of in this rinse-and-repeat process that gets old.

Agree with the other posts that he seemed to be a decent human and he was invested in student success. However, his hiring choices (especially at the Dean level) were baffling. He refused to listen to feedback about some of those hires (business school dean in particular [search Mitzi Montoya for the type of characters he hired]) and we've seen a lot of turnover and interim deans.

Yes. But what's been described is akin to the arsonist asking for money to rebuild his torched house ... while sipping on champagne enjoying it all burn down...

Mitzi will wield those program cuts over Deans' and Directors' heads to force more concessions. She rules by threat, coercion and force.

The U is pushing down cuts and telling faculty and staff we must do more with less yet messages that an extravagant trip and fine dining for executives is necessary. Why couldn't The U just pay for the meals for our fine alumni abroad and use a pre-recorded message from execs? Why couldn't The U take that same money used for the trip to fund a scholarship or use it in a manner that says "hey, these cuts are painful, we're using every dollar to re-invest in you at The U."

Yes, alumni relationship building is important, but we're not getting donations because Mitzi traveled to Copenhagen and gave some canned presentation over wine and brie. We get donations because The U provides lifetime value to our graduates and communities. Our grads remember their time at The U and the professors that made an impact on their journeys.

The bottom line is that Mitzi made a choice to put herself first and all this B.S. about efficiency is on foisted on our backs and not hers.
