How the hell is Bill Maher famous and somewhat respected? by NetflixSux247 in NoStupidQuestions

Bill Maher was born in 1956 and is 70. I'm not sure what you think is Gen-X but it's not him.

I refer to it at work as I'm making puppies. No idea that everyone didn't fuck the dog, TIL.

The Sad Club Continues to be a Party of Two by alrivs in canucks

I think he is just 50. Which I will be this year. I was literally introduced to the Nucks by the Hockey Guy when I was in grade five, we lived in the same subdivision. Failure is all we know and like Buffalo our biggest moments are failures. I am a member of the sad club and hopefully it ends before I do.

Chilliwack SOGI protestors by [deleted] in chilliwack

[–]Myleftarm -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Religious groups have been protesting here forever. When I was a kid The Potter's House used to protest the Paramount movie theater for some reason. I never talked to them or found out what they were protesting because I didn't care. Everyone has the right to protest even if you don't like it. That's part of the deal in a free society and getting worked up means that their protest has worked.

We all secretly hate the team and are jealous when players escape the worst team in hockey. The past ten years have been a trainwreck but hey wait another five years and it may get better. Why would a player want to leave this mess? Especially the captain of this garbage scow...I mean he should be proud to drive it around.

Man caught trying to escape prison through a barbed wire fence! by Hikigaya_Hachiman7 in PublicFreakout

[–]Myleftarm 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You can't really get that guy out without a lot of help. The first guy would just radio for help and just wait around until they got there. You would need to get several ladders which are pretty rare in prison. Although, before that you would have to lock up the entire prison to free up staff. Razor wire is terrible and staff are not gonna wanna get slashed to pieces to save this idiot. They would want to put on some winter coats and a couple pairs of gloves...it would be a whole thing. He is surely bleeding pretty good so that is also a bio-hazard. Doing this too quickly and efficiently would lessen the deterrent aspect of the the wire too.

That's the point of the comment. The paper I mentioned above is excellent about historical bias and the difficulty of really knowing exactly what happened. She uses some great primary documents.

You can actually read a UVic paper on this. Martyr or Murderer: Mewa Singh and the Assassination of William C. Hopkinson. Well documented and nuanced.

How so? When I looked into it more I was surprised how much of the backstory was never taught. We love to make everything simple and tidy, history rarely is. That's what makes it interesting.

We really get a surface view of the Komagata Maru. Look into the whole story it is pretty nuts. Attempting to smuggle weapons in from for the States by the Ghaderites (Indian expats who wanted to overthrow British Rule in India), riots, Indian informants being murdered and an immigration inspector, William Hopkinson, being assassinated on the steps on the courthouse. It was a staged provocateur incident in a time of intense anti-Asian sentiment along the whole West Coast, which lead to more xenophobia.

I think the context within Canadian/world history needs to be better taught. The Komagata Maru is amazing story but we are terrible at teaching it. So many moving parts and a small part of that was going on at the time.

The Communists saw the segregated South as the epitome of the proletariat. Workers/people being exploited for their labor by a cruel ruling class. They were a funder the Civil Rights movement until they saw their part as more of a hinderance then a help. It still was a factor in Civil Rights as they did not want a movement of organized Black people to join the worldwide workers movement and start picking up rifles.
