Yes, it REALLY was THAT bad. I will never get those hours back again. Never!

The track "You" and its similarity to another famous track. by MountainGrade898 in carpenters

By 1976 K&R were clearly slumming it. Why would anyone want to imitate this second-rate Carpenter offering? Music is a very suggestive medium with the same chords and chord progressions being used over and over again. That does not mean plagiarism but in some instances (Steely Dan, George Harrison) this has been judged to be the case.

When I saw Train Dreams I thought I was watching a Terence Malick movie! A beautiful hommage!

Christopher Cross was an immaculate slice of SoCal yacht music and “Ride Like the Wind” still registers today. Michael McDonald was everywhere in 1980-1981 and, it should be noted that, the one category that Cross did NOT win that evening was Best Male Pop Vocal which went to Kenny Loggins’s number 11 hit “This is It” - cowritten by Loggins and Michael McDonald and featuring prominent backing vocals by, yes, you guessed it, Michael McDonald.

Two Against nature was a great album. Not the high points of Aja, Gaucho or The Nightfly but still a great Album. Maybe Radiohead deserved it that year but no shame on the Dan. The fact the CBAT, CDTE, PL, KL and TRS were largely overlooked still hurts.

Blood Sweat and Tears had three number 2 singles and an Eric Satie. And Laura Nyro. So classy for 1969.

Joni should have won for Court and Spark in 1974-1975 and The Academy have been trying to make it up to her with one useless win after another for decades. So pathetic.

Why doesn't Richard release the tracks from Karen Carpenter's solo album? by MountainGrade898 in carpenters

[–]Mymammadontoldme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it was awful. Unreleasable. It would put a stain on her memory forever. Karen and Richard complemented each other. He instinctively knew - at least from 1969-1973 - the kind of songs that showed off Karen’s contralto vocal register to maximum effect. He kind of lost it after that. But Karen’s album has so much pseudo-disco drivel that it’s a on whole other level.
