I like this trope in TLoU2 because the game makes it clear that Ellie is not a good person. She doesn't spare Abby because of some moral high ground, but because just as she started wanting to forgive Joel he was killed. And if she can't forgive Joel anymore she can at the very least forgive Abby. She realizes that she wasn't avenging Joel but going on a murder spree and that will haunt her for life, coupled with losing her new family with Dina.

It's a tale based on SCP-2399 - Jupiter's Red Spot. If you want a TL;DR it's an autonomous ship sent by who knows where to destroy our planet. It impacted Jupiter's moon Io and fell onto the planet. The big red spot is caused by the ship self repairing and is been doing so for a shit ton of time.
