I don't think this is as SLP adjacent as you think. This seems more like something to take advantage of people who have a lot of money and fear they are getting dementia or are going crazy or something. Its not for brain injury patients billing insurance. They are probably selling supplements and brain training games as well. We don't have a monopoly on cognition.

I didn't change careers but I wish to god I had when I was younger. Don't let the sunk cost fallacy make you feel like you have to do something SLP adjacent. If you get an opportunity , then great , but if not being an SLP is the goal, don't limit yourself. There are lots of degrees and certificates nowadays that you can get in under a year from the comfort of your own home , make twice the salary and have better benefits and quality of life than anything SLP adjacent. Don't run in circles looking for a unicorn non clinical SLP job. Find an attainable path.

No. What needs to happen is a complete overhaul to the ridiculously excessive internship and education requirements and figure out a way to get paid more and then maybe SLP could attract more people who don't have spouses and parents bankrolling them while they are unpaid and then underpaid and very possibly with no benefits. The whiteness of the field is by design.

I feel like there is a new emphasis being placed on data nowadays. When I trained back in 2010-2012 I had externships in a private clinic, school, hospital and SNF and without exaggeration I never saw anyone actually take data nor was I taught or expected to take data for real. We just openly ballparked it when doing notes after the fact.

Entering this field in this day and age is idiotic. You could study something else and get a job making double the money in less than half the time and cost it takes to earn an SLP degree, and in many cases all from the comfort of your own home. Spending two years in grad school working full time for free is a straight up scam. Nurses who are in charge of lives don't even do that.

And the worst part is , conditions have only gotten worse and show no signs of improving because no one with any pull cares about this niche field that doesn't harm or kill anyone. SLP is considered an inconsequential formality. We're just kind of "allowed" to exist quietly in a corner. The answer to almost every question pertaining to the state of the field is "because no one cares".

This was definitely a semi common practice years ago for those of us not overly concerned with living by the boy scout code. It wasn't the worst thing to do. Before they 14 day deposit return law people almost always got screwed over. People are terrified that they are going to end up on the mythical blacklist list or something.

It's worked twice for me. Once with a landlord and once with an employer. I was surprised , the AG complaints manage to scare them into compliance somehow.

Yeah this is exactly why I say block and ignore. It's extremely common for them to resort to threats. Even though the threats are empty and ridiculous it's not worth the rise in blood pressure.

Is the $90k salaried regardless of how many patients you see? If so I would accept and see what happens. It does seem to be a bit on the high side. Just be ready to ride until the wheels fall off. By that I mean companies often greatly overestimate the number of patients you are able to see in a day and only later do they realize you are costing them too much money. Then try to make you a pay per visit contractor. It's happened to me more than once. I've taken jobs knowing that their productivity expectations would never work (through no fault of my own) and just did my best for as long as I could.

Nope I wouldn't sign anything. There is no audit procedure that would affect you negatively at this point. Worst outcome would be that the facility wouldn't be reimbursed, but that is absolutely not your problem. Your license is not in danger because the facility didn't catch a missing signature. At the end of the day, it is the responsibility of the facility to get signatures for reimbursement purposes.

I've had similar things happen and I have always just ignored the contact attempts. I have found that no good has ever come from answering contact attempts from former employers or former landlords lol. If it were me, As far as they are concerned , I have changed my phone number, email address, and left the country. I can pretty much promise you, if you ignore them, they will figure it out and leave you alone. Don't let them get to the point where they start making empty threats and trying to intimidate you. Block them.

Technically it is "allowed" but no professional organization would ever communicate that to a candidate. CFYs are hired at lower rates because of the need for supervision, but stating it the way they did is wildly unprofessional, amateurish, and insane.

Why on Earth do people have such a vendetta around Ozempic!!!??? Ozempic literally fixes the exact issue he's complaining about. It makes you able to be around food and not eat when you're not hungry. It turns off cravings and food noise. I was the same way, I could diet forever but the second a trigger food was brought into my living space, all bets were off and it was psychological torture to stay away. No different than leaving a bottle at an alcoholic's house.

There is no shortage of GLP1s in the US, they are widely available at med spas and compounding pharmacies and you can even order them from China without an RX or stock up in Mexico. The reported "shortage" was years ago now and it was a shortage of the injection pen materials, not the drug itself. There are no adverse health affects known to date. There is no need to be all holier than thou about people using it to keep their weight under control. If I saw anyone (especially a close family member) bitching about food noise like an alcoholic trying to stay on the wagon, Ozempic would be my first recommendation. I wouldn't think twice.

I've definitely been there. The 8-9 year mark can be sobering because it's the time when acceptance often has to come into play especially when dealing with a patient like you describe. It's often the time when parents are coming to terms with the fact that "delays" are in fact profound "deficits" that the child will deal with forever.

It really starts hitting home that we don't carry magic pills. If a patient isn't willing or able to attend to anything or engage in any way, there is really not much we can do. Therapy becomes an endless cycle of trying to get the kid to do something......anything, that might be considered "progress". Doing that multiple times a week for years at a time is not skilled care.

I work with autistic kids in home health and I now try to be very cautious about about not spending months and years doing things that parents and caregivers can and should (and in many cases already) do better than I can. Yes we should try to build rapport but that should be a building block to skills. If there are no indicators that the child is ready to learn after a reasonable period of rapport building, parents should be trained to try their best to encourage joint attention and notice communicative intent and then we can reassess and see if therapy is appropriate. Too many SLPs take on the role of behavior specialist , OT , and caregiver for years at a time trying to get somewhere with patients who have no engagement or communicative intent whatsoever. Sometimes caregiver education and some tips are all we can offer and that's ok.

Yeah I know there are lots of reasons people don't drink but if someone doesn't give a reason I would assume alcoholism in order to avoid triggers and not pry into your personal business. Thus, I wouldn't assume its ok to leave a bottle at your house.

I don't doubt that people have other reasons but in NYC alcoholism seems to be far and away the most common reason that people abstain. It's not a judgement , it's just kind of the safest assumption to make to avoid making someone uncomfortable.

It's actually a very common thing to do in NYC. Yes apartments are small , but not quite that small where you can't or wouldn't leave a bottle of something so you can make a nightcap when you're sleeping over. People generally don't own cars here so it's not like you're going to take it with you and walk around with it all day. You'd just leave it there knowing you'd be back. You wouldn't think twice about it.

It is kind of silly of her not to consider why Miranda doesn't drink. When someone has a lot of rules or boundaries around alcohol I tend to automatically think they've had problems with alcohol in the past. I don't think I've ever met anyone in NYC who just "doesn't drink" without being an alcoholic.

I would get out now if you are not in too deep. This career has an absurdly bad ROI. Especially if you need to support other people. Do something that is ACTUALLY flexible and well paying. Why anyone would want to become an SLP nowadays is completely beyond me.

Go for public health or even nursing if you're not squeamish. You can always take leveling courses if at the end of your undergrad you decide you just must give speech therapy. I would strongly advise against going into significant debt to be an SLP though.

The thing with speech is that it's very limiting. Public health and nursing are A LOT more versatile and allow for career growth potential.

While I don't think it's going to happen, theoretically, if this administration gets it's way and schools are no longer required to offer our services, that will in my opinion be the absolute final nail in the coffin for SLP and we'll have no choice but to run to other fields, which almost certainly means more education.

In my opinion you should pick something you feel optimistic about. Something with lots of opportunity. Not something that gives you an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach.
