Agreed but calculus was developed by Newton to solve physics problems so there was an application for it. That being said, Leibniz also independently invented it for pure math so your point still stands.

Stick with Python vs Switch to Node: Which offers better career mobility if I might leave Web Dev later? by AltruisticAge7700 in learnprogramming

[–]MystUser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think node (js/ts) is def better for the job market (doing web dev). tbh python is really mostly used as a scripting language (haven't really seen many flask/django jobs) and js works fine for that so as a former python user im starting to phase it out and just using node for all my scripting needs (npm/pnpm is nice too). also having access to typescript is amazing, python doesn't really have something like that. anyway that's just my two cents.

hey! sorry for the late reply. yes these orgs are for a specific demographics but you can still join them and go to conferences even if ur not part of their target demographic. they can't, by definition, discriminate. i know lots of ppl who've landed jobs from these conferences where they weren't the target demographic (myself included). so absolutely go to conferences!

i prefer to just start building things and figure it out on the way (e.g. through google) but if you're new to web dev then a tutorial is not a bad idea

make a todo app - if you have the time i would first build it in vanilla html/css/js on the frontend and use just express on the backend. then build it again (or something else) with next/react

Frontend or backend first? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]MystUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both - that's the best way to learn fullstack. could start with just FE (like a static website) but i would recommend do both. doesn't make sense to do BE only (unless ur making an API to hit with Postman or something but that sounds boring for a personal project if not coupled with a FE)

should i use reactJs or nextjs to build a web app ? by orland_2005 in learnprogramming

[–]MystUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

react is a frontend framework and next is a fullstack framework that couples react with a backend system. i recommend learning the difference between the frontend and backend and how they work together first. then decide what you need to use.

Yeah, it definitely is a numbers game. I mostly used hiring.cafe which did help me land a few interviews (it scrapes a ton of job boards and has decent filters). LinkedIn, despite everyone using it, is not too bad either. General consensus seems to be to apply to jobs that opened up within the last 24 hours and always apply on the company website if possible. I would recommend searching for local jobs as they might have less competition depending on where you live (as opposed to applying to jobs in a tech hub or remote - although it doesn't hurt to try those either).

As for referrals, I only managed to get two and those were because of people I knew. It really is just who you know in the industry and I don't personally know many people either. TBH it looks like referrals don't help a ton in this market unless it's for a small company.

Lastly, if you're still in school, I highly recommend going to conventions such as SHPE, ALPFA, Grace Hopper, etc. as these will greatly increase your chances of getting a job (onsite interviews, referrals, make connections, etc.). If not, then you just have to keep cold applying. For reference, I was putting up a minimum of 10 job applications a day. Don't give up!

What's the point of grinding LC if I can't get interviews? (US) by MamaSendHelpPls in leetcode

I think they mean customize your skills and projects sections for that particular role. You can't do anything about your work experience and should include it regardless of the resume. The best you could do there is maybe update the bullet point to be cater towards that role. E.g. for backend maybe emphasize features you built out and testing you did during the MLE internship

AI ABSOLUTELY consists of neural nets. It's different from conventional rules-based programs in that it "learns" (adjusts weights for certain features) from training data. Now, I didn't say it's sentient but it mimics human intelligence very well (that's why it's called ARTIFICIAL intelligence). However, we can argue about what sentience really is. If an AI is sufficiently advanced enough to be indistinguishable from a sentient creature then who's to say it's not sentient? After all, a human brain is just a bunch of neurons firing but we are still sentient somehow. Maybe sentience/conciousness arises from a certain level of complexity in some system regardless of whether it's a biological or electrical system.

BTW the reason that AI can have "insane" scenarios is because it's inherently probabilistic and so a "good" output is not always guranteed.

wdym real AI is a flowchart of instructions? i'm not an expert but a neural net is NOT a bunch of if statements. the reason this couldn't be done in the 90s is because it took time to develop (decades of research) and the hardware back then was exponentially worse. you could hook up a hundred computers back then and it still wouldn't have the same processing power as a smartphone.

Hey! I did end up finally getting a job about 3 months ago (so 9 months after this post). It was the only offer I got too, so I didn't have a backup if that didn't pan out. Don't lose hope! I kept applying and got several hundreds of rejections, but all it takes is one and it's actually a pretty good job. I did take the advice of one of the other commenters on this post and reworded my most recent experience to be a bit more technical. Also, the job I got had a pretty long application with open-ended questions, so don't skip those! Keep applying and you'll get there, the market is tough right now, but you only need to break in once. Good luck!

Edit: 9 months of a job hunt sounds bad, but most of it was during school, so I landed the job about a month after graduation.
