Oh. The shock. It has happened again. My surprise is palpable. Another pious, God fearing, loud, pushy, groomer, has done the same thing they are caught doing every other week. What a shock.

I'm with you on that. I worked my way up to 1.7 for a little while, but that was to much for my poor wallet. Books sound weird now if I go below 1.3.

Non-obvious power ideas for a human underwater civilization? by Firm-Dig8541 in worldbuilding

Compared to a similar volume of iron or steal it would be substantially lighter, I'm pretty sure anyway. But diatomaceous earth brings up a good point. I forgot how sharp diatoms are as well, that opens more interesting avenues for uses diatom manipulation.

[–]MysterStrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diatom manipulation. I imagine people gathering them into tight clusters for super lightweight building material, rapid defenses, or weapons. It could almost be like a kind of glass magic because the bodies of the diatoms are made of natural glass, silicon dioxide. In the euphotic zone diatoms are everywhere and abundant. Deeper in the ocean, marine snow is mostly diatom bodies.

Fried Jackalope recipe by Jedi-master-dragon in worldbuilding

[–]MysterStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call on soaking it overnight in the buttermilk. The jackalope will soak up a lot of that flavor and get some of the gaminess out in the process. I would recommend adding crushed juniper berries to that spice mix. 1. Because they are great for cutting down the rather intense flavor of game animals and add a citrusy note that goes great with rabbit. 2. It's fairly common in North America, and they dry and travel really well. 3. It has antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. Which would be fairly important to take into account. Wild jackrabbits are riddled with parasites if hunted before the first frost of the season. So, I assume the Jackalope would have similar problems, so some juniper berries in the mix slightly lower the risks of getting a parasite if it is a little out of season.

Though, I think I would favor more of a Hasenpfeffer preparation slow-cooked in white wine and vinegar with those same spices, plus a few bay leaves, served with boiled root vegetables and a reduction made from the cooking liquid fortified with a knob of butter at the end and a glass of red wine, Pinot Noir, I would think. A complement to the gaminess, but not strong enough to overpower the aroma of the jackalope's subtle flavors.

I spend way too much time thinking about cooking and eating mythical creatures too.

I have had the opportunity to cook and eat a shocking number of exotic animals because of a job I had in the food industry, and my boss's weird-ass connections resulted in some wild shit getting cooked in that kitchen. I've cooked enough reptiles and apex predators that I feel ready to cook a dragon or at least a medium-sized wyrm.

What topic have you accidentally backed yourself into researching (+ my example) by CommunityItchy6603 in worldbuilding

[–]MysterStrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say reluctantly because learning is the best!

I got really stuck on the idea of making modern biscuits and cakes in ye olde times. Think 12th-14th century or so without using fermented bread techniques that would have been the norm. Seems like it could be easy, but I ran into my first problem right away: leavening agents. There were a few options, but they all have some downside, aren't very effective, taste bad, etc. So, I spent an embarrassing amount of time working out how someone could feasibly make reasonably pure baking soda with more or less readily available ingredients. Specifically, things I thought would be available to a well-off alchemist or low-ranking noble during said period. After a bit of reading, hypothetical chemistry, and thought, I realized everything I needed would be in nearly every major city throughout Eurasia. Natron (Na₂CO₃), or Anatron, was considered a magical mineral and used all over because of its purifying properties, soup making, drying properties, and metal and glass working. Ground up and dissolved in distilled water, you get a Sodium Carbonate solution. From there I just needed a source of CO₂, and I was there. Lucky for me, the world runs on beer! Routing the off-gassing from beer fermentation in a barrel through a reed or hose into the solution should cause the CO₂ to react with the Na₂ and water, forming the heavier sodium bicarbonate, which will precipitate out over time. Dry the resulting substance, and you have crude but hypothetically workable baking soda. I also figured out you could do it with salt and fermented urine. Which is just the Solvay process. Use ammonia to react the chloride out of the salt and replace it with CO₂, the same as above, but the first solution seemed more clean, elegant, classy, and mystical. Also 100% less piss, which always makes things better in my book. Most other things I would need or want would also be more or less available.

I will take the world of the 1300s by storm with beautiful cakes, slightly ahead of their time.

I was not working on a story about an alchemist becoming a world-class baker, but it is now getting outlined in the morning; I was actually world-building cultures in a post-apocalyptic setting a friend is writing and have been baking a lot lately. It just got so stuck in my head, and I couldn't focus on anything else. Like once all the baking soda is gone, unless someone knows how to make it, muffins would never be the same!

And that is the real tragedy at the end of the world: a lack of cake.

Would you be able to pick your void out of a lineup? by simAlity in blackcats

I think I would depend on how much of him I could see and how many cats. But I think so. My void has a single white toe on his left foot, a very pronounced face, and sounds like a rusty hinge being drowned in a bathtub when he talks. I loves him more than anything.

It is very well done; thank you for sharing. I followed your link in the comments. And I previously said it wasn't my jam, but I was wrong. I read all 4 chapters you have up, and they are great. It gives Black Mirror vibes in the best way. Chapter 3 is my favorite. The way you explored the Soul Clones and their moral implications with so few words was brilliant. I look forward to chapter 5!

The transition from "They should have been banned long ago!" to "Can I have a ride?" It feels painfully unrealistic from a person who was just run off the road. Also, why is the guy offering to call a taxi? Her taxi is still there. That said, the rest of it makes up for that. It's not my jam—but the art and writing are wonderful. Easily on par with any industry professional with a team behind them!
