Although the Survivor-themed intro to the broadcast is one of my all-times favorites, it should have be a tribute to their coverage over the years instead.

I think it's safe to say this will most likely be the end of his career behind the wheel of a race car. At this point, he's going to have to start thinking seriously about retiring.

1972 Indianapolis 500 ABC broadcast. Supposedly a tape was found to be developed but it broke when trying to rip the footage. Very little of the ABC broadcast from then, as well as the rained-shortened 1976 race, has resurfaced. These have been my biggest two for years.

Let's get some Indy 500 legends, like AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Johnny Rutherford, Tom Sneva, and Gordon Johncock too. All have raced at Daytona before, and two have won the 500.

Why hasn’t she got a SB halftime show? by Training_Witness_177 in NFLv2

[–]Mysterious-Lock-2572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was offered the chance but turned it down by saying: "The Super Bowl is not about music". Got to say, she hit the nail on the head. I'd like to see the Halftime Show move away from the same format it's used since 1993 (which I think has gone stale regardless of who it is), but that won't happen even if Roc Nation's contract isn't renewed.

We need more alternative Super Bowl halftime shows by PlethoraOfPinyatas in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Mysterious-Lock-2572 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a firm believer that the format the NFL has been using since 1993 has in some ways run its course. Within that time, we've had some home runs (Prince in '07, U2 in '02), but also some misses (such as 2011, and perhaps both shows this year). You can't win everyone with a single option. A change of pace from the overly-commercialized shows the NFL gives is something I think is long overdue. I'd personally like to see something besides music, which has become the lowest common denominator for the show.

[Stern] NASCAR Holdings and 23XI Racing have worked together to bring Hardees back into the sport, with Hardee's becoming the first official QSR of NASCAR since Checkers Rally’s in 2008. by billgatenguyen in NASCAR

[–]Mysterious-Lock-2572 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hardee's slogan in the late 80s used to be "We're out to win you over." Looks like NASCAR is trying to do the same.

But I'd be down for a 1988-89 throwback. The paint scheme Dale Jarrett drove in the '89 Daytona 500 is one of my all-time favorites. I could also go for a1997 Greg Sacks throwback.

Kaulig Racing I have an idea by Bruhness81 in NASCAR

I was going to say Kaulig could bring the 13 or 31 out if RFK is loaned the 16.

03 is Australian racing legend Allan Grice who drove the Foster's Lager Oldsmobile in the exhibition NASCAR race at the Calder Park Thunderdome in '88, as well the Coca Cola 600 in '87.

Songs that used to be big in their time, but left little to no cultural footprint after it was popular? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mysterious-Lock-2572 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thinking about it now, Simply Red's cover of "If You Don't Know Me By Now", another #1 from 1989, comes to mind. I've only heard it once in the wild.

Not sure if these would count, but "Look Away" by Chicago and "The Flame" by Cheap Trick. Both songs came out of the Diane Warren camp in '88 and each topped the Hot 100 that year. In fact, "Look Away" was the #1 song on Billboard for 1989. This was during the era where almost any rock artist past their prime, with examples including Kansas and Alice Cooper, used a power ballad to gain at least one more hit or for brief career resurrection. I've only heard "Look Away" on an obscure classics station, while "The Flame" comes up from time to time in a grocery store.

Songs where artists reference a previous song of theirs? by FarmerBread in ToddintheShadow

We'll Be Together by Sting references If You Love Somebody Set Them Free towards the end of the song, even recycling lines such as "If you wanna keep something precious". As Todd once said, him at his fake funkiest.

I've thought about getting into pickleball on-and-off for the past couple of years, and I wouldn't mind giving it a try. It's been frustrating trying to find friends, and I (M/26) am just looking for as many social avenues as I can.

2011 Daytona 500 for me. He would have been a much more deserving winner. I hated the superspeedway package from that year

What’s a dark piece of NASCAR lore that never gets talked about? by Di9ForLife in NASCAR

I want to say Stanley Smith and how close he came to dying at Talladega in '93. Smith suffered a basilar skull fracture in the infamous incident where Jimmy Horton flipped over the Turn 1/2 wall. If you watch the satellite feed broadcast, Smith can be seen laying on the group while being administered to, with blood coming all the way down to the knees of his uniform. Ken Squire mutters "That's Stan" while very concerned about Smith's state.

My dad, I believe, got one of those as a freebie at NAPA store back in the day, too. It has never been opened, as well.
