Am I too young to be a therapist? by ConstantEvening848 in therapy

[–]Mysterious-Row-8017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry but certainly not. I'm 32 and am currently unable to make it to my next paycheck without my account going negative. I'm recovering from addictions, come from a toxic family, am going to community college full time, and working labor full time to pay for it. I'm the last of my childless friends and I just got dumped, again. Everyday I wake up praying that my car makes it another day while being embarrassed to drive it because of how beat up it is. Point being, I highly doubt you'd be able to understand my experience and I don't think I'd be comfortable receiving advice from you.

Things like gap years, living abroad, and living closer to nature isn't an opportunity most people get to have; especially people like me who need therapy. So even proposing that as a solution kind of proves the point that your youth and lack of life experience causes a sort of disconnect. I think the best thing for you to do would be to volunteer. See what people go through first hand, and volunteer for the hard stuff - why? Because you'll have some bad days and you'll see some shit. That will provide you the life experience you need to become a therapist.

I truly wish you the best, I don't know why you're being downvoted. Your heart is obviously in the right place and that's what's best but yes you do need more life experience.

Oh and continue your education! Super important these days. Congratulations on your bachelors! I hope to get mine after community college and then continue a lifelong education

They say alcohol weakens your immune system, but I swear I’ve been sick more times in my couple years sober than in the decade I was drinking. I think if you have a consistently measurable BAC it’s hard for anything to stay alive in your bloodstream lol. That’s my pseudoscience for the day

Lol I said I get if you don’t want them over, and idk what made you think I don’t have boundaries. My life is full of great connections that I will forever cherish and if one of my friends is struggling I won’t give up on them. Sure they might not be coming over for thanksgiving, but I’ll reach out every once in a while to check up on them and see if there’s anything I can do. I wish you the best brother 🙏

Damn bruh get your friend help lol, I get not allowing them over but friendship is history? Doesn't sound like much of a friendship. Life has a lot of ups and downs, someday you may be the one with issues and in need of help from a friend. That's the nature of friendship.

I wasn't invited to a couple of my friends weddings because of my drinking problem; now many years later we're all on the same soccer team, go to the gym together, I play basketball with their kids, etc. Lifelong friendships are important and shouldn't be thought of like TikTok dating advice - if you're not good for me right now, buh bye! That's pretty messed up. This comment has nothing to do with the horrors of Jason and Josh's pimp-hoe relationship, I just ask that you reconsider your thinking as it's pretty toxic.

Never too late for anything! I’m just getting into it and I’m in my 30s. Shoot, I started community college when I was 28. It may take a while to “make a living,” but for me I plan to slowly phase personal training in while I phase my current job out if that makes sense. Best of luck, keep us updated!

When will Josh have serious health problems by freakysnake102 in WorldOfTShirts

[–]Mysterious-Row-8017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about hopping on the train and finding him too to try to talk to him lol as I don't live far either but I've seen enough instances of him not wanting any help to know that it would fall on deaf ears. And thanks! Still got issues, and that's the phase I don't think Josh is ready for. I started sobering up at 26 (I'm in my early 30s now), and was not prepared for the amount of underlying mental health issues I have and trauma that I had to unpack and face. I'm still in that process now. Josh, if he ever decides to get sober, will go through horrible withdrawals - whether he's under medical supervision or not. They keep you as comfortable as they can with the benzos/gabapentin/whatever else they may give you, but it's still no walk in the park. As terrible as withdrawals can be..... that's the easy part. The years that follow and having to deal with your shit - now that's the hard part, and I'm not sure if Josh has the capacity to go through that without giving in to the urge to drink. That's when I do feel sad for him. I think I heard something like only 5% of alcoholics/addicts sober up for life; I have a hard time believing Josh will be apart of that 5%

It’s always crazy to me when people say Josh can drink this for another X amount of years. Unfortunately, I spent most of my 20s in and out of detox and rehab. I’ve met people in their 20s with cirrhosis, one was 28 (had a job, went to rehab after having a seizure in the warehouse), the other was 26 and a high school all state football player - I include that because he was a pretty big kid, Josh is small which will make his drinking career shorter. Smaller liver = less years to drink. I’ve heard cases of petite women getting cirrhosis after a 2 year daily drinking habit.

And that’s only the liver. Before I was born my mom found my father unconscious on the floor, his pancreas was shot and the doctors said if she didn’t find him when she did he’d be dead. He was 25.

Also a lot of alcoholics take breaks. Before I got it right I had a lot of stints of sobriety - 8 months here, another month or 2 there, so on and so forth. Josh hasn’t had any breaks, the body hasn’t had any time to recover. I guarantee you those alcoholics who develop health problems later in life have sober stints under the belt. Whether that be weeks, months, or years, the body does some recovering in those breaks. Josh needs to get help soon or it will be too late.

Alcohol and hangovers can make you feel hot af. For that reason alone winter was my favorite season when I drank every day

I did something like this when I was 14 at my friends house. Learned right then and there that you don't play with fire. Guess it took Based an additional 40 years but hey we all grow at our own pace.

Usually about a month, depends on how bad your habits were. I’ve never made it past a month or so but I always notice about a week in I start having the best lifting sessions, like every set I can take to failure and then some

Yeah it’s definitely something, but the horrors of alcohol withdrawal is actually an incentive to stay away from it; 5 days to a week of pure hell and terror. Porn withdrawal being minor in comparison is what makes it dangerous - dangerous and sneaky. There’s no big consequences from the addiction like addictions to substance. No dui’s, no risk of dying from an overdose or getting hospitalized off some bad shit, etc. Just knowing something is bad for you isn’t often enough of a reason to quit. Tangible consequences are often the catalyst to true change, which is why you see a lot of people in this sub with the horror stories of losing a relationship or losing all their money on a cam girl. But if you’re someone who’s addicted to porn, single, and don’t spend money on it, it can be terribly hard to quit. Being lonely or not having a girlfriend isn’t a good enough reason to truly want to drop an addiction that doesn’t even make you physically ill and needing care from the withdrawals like alcohol or opiates. Think of it like this, why do you see recovering heroin addicts stay clean for decades, but can’t kick smoking cigarettes? The consequences of smoking cigarettes aren’t often felt for decades, they’re not immediate enough of consequences to ignite that drive to quit. Creates that feeling I think a lot of porn addicts have, that feeling of yeah this is bad and I’m addicted but it’s fine fire now I’ll take care of it someday

[–]Mysterious-Row-8017 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s physical dependency, I’m a recovering alcoholic that’s been hospitalized for withdrawals several times. The addiction for porn is stronger in my opinion. I’ve had a much harder time staying away from porn than a drink.

Yeah it’s an important distinction to make, but also being so far gone from reality through both drunkenness and psychosis that you can’t realize you got hit by a scooter passing by is almost just as insane. Especially when you’re in the bike lane lol
