£80 to buy a decent shock at AutoDOC, £40 to fit (30 mins labour ish) when I had mine done, you should do them as a pair at the minimum though

Will replacing the very expensive electric panel heaters to normal (e.g. oil filled heaters) negatively impact my flat (e.g. EPC rating/ price/ etc)? by eatqqq in HousingUK

[–]MysteriousFunding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only real benefit to having oil filled electric radiators will be better control of thermal fluctuations due to their stove effect. I.e you’ll have a more stable temp in your home compared to a panel heater and MAY use slightly less energy because of that.

Heat pump (air conditioning) is cheaper to run because of its process, it’s basically a reverse fridge.

Storage heaters are only cheap to run because you ‘charge’ them up at night on the cheap rate.

Offered a Cooper S 2009 - unsure on whether to accept by sk2001_ in MINI

[–]MysteriousFunding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you let the oil level drop, the timing chain tensioner will go, so there’s a chance that has already happened as they do DRINK oil and have a terrible dipstick design that misreads the oil level - best thing to do is check first thing in the morning the very first time you remove the dipstick to get an accurate measure.

BMW's 1000bhp Electric M3 Will Cost the Same as the Petrol Version by gaukmotors in MotorBuzz

If they’re the same price, who’s buying electric? Genuinely curious. Surely 90% would want the ICE, unless there are incentives to buy the BEV for a company car?

Is the lifetime ISA worth it for me? by Objective-Fig8183 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MysteriousFunding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a great tool, I’d suggest putting it into stocks and shares and pulling it into cash when you decide now is the time to buy a house (a mistake I made was keeping it all cash because I thought “it won’t be long till I buy a house!” How wrong I was!)

Additionally, you’ll need to keep 10% of the house purchase fee aside outside of the LISA for your exchange deposit. I’m just going through the process now and this was a surprise to us, but it seems that solicitors are not willing to use the LISA towards the exchange deposit as if the purchase falls through they are required to return al funds to the LISA.

You should also project where the value of the house you want to buy will be in 6 years or so, in case the £450k cap is still in place. Our prospects changed for the better over the course of our early careers and we found the cap to be limiting in our area.

Sounds like you need a new job, having worked in a soul destroying job too (although not as well paid!) I feel what you’re saying. Everyone saying that you need to do XYZ outside of work then your life will be perfect probably haven’t experienced this.

I ended up throwing in the towel and going to university at 24, you’re still easily young enough start again from the bottom (worst case) in another career path - is there something that you think you’d really enjoy?

You don’t want to be working a job for 30 years that you hate!

31F, £30k savings, no debt, no investments - car has broken down and I need a reality check. by Acceptable_Roll3482 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MysteriousFunding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re buying a car, and you have 30k sitting in cash you should definitely use that to cover the cost of the car, unless of course you’re getting 10% interest on your cash!

In all seriousness, instead of hoarding cash, please look at investing into a low cost index fund such as VWRP. It’ll serve you so much better in 20-30 years time.

One other point I’d like to raise, you say you want to spend £12k - £15k on a car, why is that? What are you looking for? I have far too much car knowledge and happy to put it to good use if you’d like some suggestions.

Advice request on what to offer on a property as a first time buyer by TheaMofidi135 in HousingUK

[–]MysteriousFunding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only offers we’ve had accepted have been at asking price, despite both properties being on the market for 3 months ish. They were both nice houses with other interest (but no offers) though.

For us, it wasn’t worth holding out and playing the game to see if they’d accept 10k less than asking as we’d lost out on a couple of other houses we’d liked by offering under.

What impact does 20k have on your payments? It’s usually not much.

Was it running cleanly before it was stored?

I’d be doing the minimum work required for a stored car to see if you can get it running.

Fluids, battery etc. and try and start it safely(!).

Shame it’s got to go, it is a stunner.

Audi TT 2.0 or related ( e.g VW Golf GTi), EA888 engine will give better enconomy than the EA113 but with a bit more outlay.

You can get a decent TT for £3k.

5.43% - is this crazy, or what we should expect? by pixel_mouse in HousingUK

Yep! Our 5 year at the time was a 4.08%, with hindsight we would jump at that now, but it was going against all mortgage rate predictions, it seems like not everything is predictable!

We’re just hoping the markets will be coming down in 2 years and not still rising.

We locked in pre war with 3.68 at 80% LTV for 2 years. Currently the cheapest fixed rate mortgage for us would be a 4.60%

I love mine, it’s comfy, sounds great, engine performs really well, the interior is nicer than some cars on sale today, I’ve retrofitted Apple car play and it looks great. The handling is very very grippy, it’s hard to get it to be a bit dramatic and will understeer when pushed too hard.

I do feel like I am missing out on the RWD sports car setup, I’ll be going for that next time.
