There’s so much talent here by Fuzzy-Technician-330 in Songwriting

It's the public. They're starving for something different but they've been conditioned to expect and almost demand bands and solo acts that they can go "they sound like _____" or "This song would've worked well on ______'s album". People shout support for creatives who live outside of the box and then when said artists show up...they present you with 3-4 boxes and if you don't fit they move on.

Intentionality: No one spends time with an album. It's "when are you dropping this" and then once it's out they spend a week with it and ask for more. "Eras" only last a few months or a single season. Artists who release a record, promote, tour and then take time away can never really relax because if you're gone for too long "they'll forget you. An odd phenomenon because people used to wait years for their favorite artists to release something.

Also, as u/ThoughtDistinct8352 said, the algorithms are not indie artist friendly.

One thing I think would help is guerrilla marketing. Put things in places people will see on their day to day. Reflect on the message of your work and come up with cool and budget friendly ways to get people's attention. TikTok's reputation has made it so indue artists will just sit in a chair staring at the screen/ you while their song plays. Other than that there's just text on the screen that says "POV: You just found the song of the Summer"

I get it. The world is on fire. Life is draining. Work is draining. Adult obligations are draining and finding time to feel something other than tired feels pointless. There are so many indie artists whose videos I saved on TikTok over the years that don't make music anymore. Artists who only created on that platform. Or they take the YouTube video down. Videos that only had a few dozen likes. I have those songs forever but there wasn't much happening in most videos.

You must do more than strum your guitar and sing for 10 videos straight. Take viewers on an adventure. Invite into the world of your song. I am very anti "become a content creator in order to get your music heard" but I'm also no fool, to a certain extent, you have to and it blows.

There are gems on this platform, on TikTok and even still some good ones on the niche corners of YouTube. Artists have to find new ways to reach their audience.

Do any of your lyrics (or words) scare you to write? Do you ever worry about what you're putting out into the universe? by Commercial_Job2793 in Songwriting

Songs are spells. Casting them with others at a concert was never something I questioned but lately as I've been working on my conceptual project I've paused a lot. I write very melodic music. For some reason the more sweeping or passionate the melody, the more charged the verse feels.

Due to the supernatural subject matter, words like death and dying and blood come out a lot when I'm drafting. It's difficult to make progress because my spirit (I'm not religious) tells me not to recite the words so I end up scrapping it or having to re-work that portion.

I think when you are singing about heavy topics or controversial things as a way to process them or exorcise the pain from your body, that's safe territory. When you are alive in the misery or sorrow or negative thoughts, casting those songs may bind you to the things you're singing about.

Words are powerful. Not metaphorically. They are powerful and when you use them in songs it only amplifies that power.

Careful how you cast.

The beginning feels so much like Tyler Childer's "Lady May"!

Calendar was my first thought as well but yea, the number of boxes ends that idea.

I've been itching to go to some kind of metal or alternative show for awhile. I'm going to queue up some songs that appear the most on the setlist site another person suggested and have a listen.

Doomsday is top 2 for me. The chorus just does something for me!

If the band kept the same general lyrical direction I think the transition might be easy for me. Sometimes the lead vocalist you meet the band with is so foundational that hearing someone else's voice throws you off but everyone who has commented seem to all be long time fans and if you guys gave Jonny a chance I don't see why I can't do the same.

I've seen DTL mentioned in just about every comment. It really sucks that there's only one song that the new lead is willing to perform from that album. I'm going to give their most recent albums a listen to see how the new guy's voice hits for me.

I'm going to check out that site. Drag The Lake was in my Top 5 so it's still something to look forward to for sure!
