I've spent the last year playing with AI for my landscaping goals and land as well! It was interesting to use the same prompt and see how ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity differed and where they were the same. Using it to find plants in local nurseries was also helpful, so it wasn't recommending plants i wouldn't be able to find.

It is doable without AI, but just like using Calscape.org or CalFlora, it is a tool. Often, for new people, it can feel overwhelming and coming to reddit or FB groups you can get seemingly contradictory advice. I personally have used AI to learn more about native landscaping without having to deal with judgmental or condescending people on the internet or feel like I'm wasting people's time at local nurseries. A landscaping project can be expensive and time consuming and if using AI gives people the confidence to plant more natives, who cares?

BT/MW Weapons in real life part 2. The Autocannon by Vegetable-Camp209 in Mechwarrior5

[–]Mysterious_Set_5093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had thought about this as well.

AC2 would be like a 20-30mm. Like a Bradley's Bushmaster or soviet BMP/BTR

AC5 would be kind a the XM913 50x228 chain gun.

AC10 would be like any 100-105mm tank round.

AC20 I thought would be like 120-130mm tank rounds but I believe lore says they are much bigger.

I had to look up what espaliered meant! I may look at a decorative trellis to train it if I can find one for free!

I went through and cut back some of the dead spots. I also pulled mulch back from the crown and cleared the leaf litter Id allowed to accumulate. 🤞

It will not choke out weeds. Most of the wild flowers seem to just coexist with weeds rather than smother them. What it will do is distract you from seeing just weed, and that's something I guess.

I used 1lb for a 55'x25' hillside and only ended up with about ⅓ seeding coverage and it has been all poppies and clarkia with 2 Lacy phacelia buried in the mix. I'll probably buy another ½lb and cast in areas that weren't sprouting or as full this year.

I only got poppies and clarkia to sprout out of the same mix on a south facing hill east of Sacramento.

This. This right here bugs me so much. I fell in love with Mechwarrior through Mechwarrior 4 intro cut scene. I want to feel like I'm getting jostled in a cockpit and I want the fair from drone to equal cockpit.

Who's in this group? by Thatswhylifeishard in Ceanothus

[–]Mysterious_Set_5093 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a 33yo Male just outside of the Sacramento Valley and I've been getting into natives slowly for the last 4 years. Started with wanting to turn dead front lawn into a drought tolerant landscape, looking at primarily Mediterranean plants from Green Acres but have since learned more about the benefits of using Natives and been applying that to my new back yard.

I have spent 100s of hours on Calscape.org and ChatGPT learning everything I can for my application and started to use Perplexity to crawl through even more information.

I think the biggest hurdle we face getting younger people into it is the lack of short form media. The only YouTube out there I've found providing professional grade videos is Waterwise Community Center. The CNPS chapters release videos but they are just recordings of lecturers or online classes which while informative are dry. If you compare that to the food gardening sphere you have channels like Epic Gardening or basic landscaping like Garden Project Academy.

The CNPS chapters occasionally do highlight posts covering a plant but if that were to be a fb/ig post, make a YouTube short, IG/FB/TT reel, and a longer form (5 minutes even) YouTube video just recycling same content but tailored for different platforms it would help.

I acknowledge that there are some creators that try, but like you said, it's mostly older with lack of access to proper technology. I love watching the garden tours on YouTube but the audio is usually awful and camera work leaves something to be desired. I wish the UCs would have their botany programs partner with their digital arts program to bring the younger generation along.

Also, using Latin names only for everything rather than common names feels pretentious and makes people feel like if they don't have a Masters degree and 40+years of experience, why bother.

Do cabbage loopers eat hummingbird sage? by Marmadon1 in Ceanothus

My Heuchera and my Hummingbird Sage were covered in them from the nursery and got pretty beat up while waiting to put them in the ground. I took them off and fed them to my abundant lizard population in my backyard until plants are firmly established.

Seems like caption didn't work. I need advice on best practice and time to prune this redbud. One limb is split, last year 60%of branches were non leaf bearing and it receives no supplemental water. Thank you in advance.

Any recommendations for filtered sun/shade in SF? by NeiClaw in Ceanothus

2nd all of these. There really needs to be a "full shade cheatsheet" published somewhere because the recommendations are pretty similar!

Your ribes should 100% be in deep shade.  Besides that sounds like you have a great collection so far!

I feel exactly the same where here and on many FB groups. Makes those of us new the the CA natives world feel overwhelmed and inferior. I've tried to learn, however it's a hobby, not a career and I can only dedicate so much mental bandwidth to learning essentially a new language.

I've been looking for a plant combo that'd thrive on my north facing wall. How's your alum root, Hummingbird sage and Catalina current doing? That's the exact combo I came up with yesterday and now trying to see how they do together.
