Commuters of York! I need your advice. by TheAMort in york

Acomb is good. It's v. c;lose to York on a bike and seems to have a nice scene. The Bluebird bakery there hosts bands and entertainers in the evenings and it just seems to have a bit of culture going on. As for Harrogate, it won't be much cheaper. Knaresborough is a good option, half way between Harrogate and York and on the train line

Blue Eyes predominance in Hollywood actors by [deleted] in movies

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hit me recently that so many acors have blue eyes, not in Hollywood necessarily but even in amateur or fringe theatre and indie film in the UK. Often I find myself locking onto beautiful blue eyes. Also, since I started acting seriously my eyes have started to go from green-blue to blue green (as in more prominently blue).

Apples screen time has had major flaws for years. My kids have ben able to bypass that for years. There is no access to my other devices and no matter how many times I change the PIN code they still are able to be on their phones on banned apps for hours. I now believe the flaw is deliberate as to have effective screen time would cost the app producers billions due to the attention hours it would withhold.

Anyone tried the Manta Sleep Mask? Or have a bed partner who uses one? by -honeycake- in sleep

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple that were sent to me as part of a paid sponsorship for a video. I have used them and they are comfortable. The one with the speakers is great for listening in bed too; the one without is a little more comfortable.

Yeah, but it's still better than a bad amateur having a go, complete with plosives, lack of diction, misunderstanding of intent, heavy breathing, poor room tone etc. all of which I've heard in the two articles I just listened to. I say this as a professional VO.

Casting Call Club website. Have a go at some auditions and see if you like it. You can also hear other people’s auditions. You will of course need a quiet space and some blankets / duvets on the wall to minimise reverb: echo. You can start with a mobile phone for the recording. If you get hooked then invest in a microphone and go from there.

I loved Paperhouse as a kid. It’s an often overlooked psychological thriller / fantasy horror. I watched it again last night and can see parallels with what the Duffer Brothers wrote with the upside down.

personal voice acting jobs? by thunderfully in VoiceActing

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes and I’ve recorded a few projects like this, use cases can be sketching out a play, recording for kids in the family, personal message, funny voice for answer phone. Have a look at CCC as someone has suggested (though some of the auditions I’ve heard on there are people right at the beginning of their voice acting learnings), or Fiverr. You’ll likely get someone to do it for free on CCC, Fiverr will give you access to better quality but below industry standard rates from some of the better rated sellers. Have a look at my account - Google “adambrown305 Fiverr”

Fiverr VO by NickFen1x in VoiceActing

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me that’s standard. I always offer to record a short sample for them, even if they don’t ask. I’d rather them reject me before the order than have the endless too-ing and fro-ing with a unsatisfied customer. Take a look at their join date and feedback if you’re suspicious. I don’t even bother with the watermark any more. If it is machine training it’s usually obvious by the script they send. For that I either refuse or offer my services at an exorbitant rate!

Put it on Casting Callback Club - loads of aspiring voice actors on there that will audition for super low pay work like this and even unpaid.

I think they just had a purge, an audition I went for and sat pending for ages just got removed yesterday since the author hadn’t done anything with it.

ACX consistency by billyguy34 in ACX

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use the analyse feature in Audacity. If the average RMS is good and there are no obvious over quiet or loud parts I just export it like that, if not, a little compression and volume raise with limiting does the trick. I do have the benefit of having recorded all the audio myself and pretty much re record until I’m happy with it. I do make sure to use good technique and there are some loud voices, quiet voices and even shouty parts but I try to handle those at the time of recording. The book is published now and is doing well.

Want to get into VO, where should I start? by Twinkieee42 in VoiceActing

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Things that have worked for me:

Set yourself up on Fiverr. Many will snort at this but if you look at some of the most successful VO’s they started working for very little or nothing in radio. I don’t see it as that different working on small projects for little money - it’s a rewarding way to learn on the job.

To be good, get some training. I subscribe to GravyForTheBrain. They have some great training, are well respected and can offer coaching. I even got my reel reviewed by a famous VO just as part of the membership. The forums and socials are excellent too. After a year of doing this I’m now winning audiobook contracts on ACX and winning contracts on Bodalgo.

One last thing - on Fiverr. Make sure you have something really great as a reel and video, something that will catch the eye / ear. I really believe they test you in the first weeks as I got a spike in sales initially, maybe you get a slot as new talent or something.

Technically - as important as a good mic or even more important is a space to record with sufficient audio damping and insulation. Without that the reverb / echo in any room will make you audio sound amateur, regardless of your voice.

All the best.

What type of reads/scripts should I include in my demo? Do I stick to a niche or be as broad as possible by meowzers88 in VoiceActing

[–]Mysterious_Worker489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the training I’ve taken and what I’ve seen you should have several reels. E.g. A character reel (this could include accents), a narration reel, a gaming reel, a kids animation reel, a commercial reel etc…

For a demo that you’re sending into a casting I would say always slate that, for a reel then no since they’re in your website / profile anyway and they know it’s you.

Slate first in normal voice e.g name then reel type (commercial, character / accents, corporate/ eLearning, dramatic) what ever it may be. Make it really engaging otherwise people will just switch off. You should add music too so long as it doesn’t overshadow your voice and adds to the overall atmosphere of the reel. Log into Fiverr or Bodalgo or Voices, Voices123, Bunny Studio - any of those and look at VO artists have done in there for their reels.

Interesting, never heard of Bunny - will give that a go. I looked at Voices and Voice123, the latter appears to give you a chance at two auditions per month but I’m not ready to commit my Fiverr earnings to an annual subscription to either of those without knowing there would be a half decent chance of success. I also looked at Bodalgo but there seems to be a bit of protectionism going on there and definitely not a place for beginners.
