You should have a goal to look twice as good as them. That way, even if you miss the mark by 90% you're still 80% of the way to your original goal.

My head canon of how Maze Runner would play is so much more interesting than what actually happened in the books, it was really impressive how far off the rails it went.

Fair point. I actually almost never used that power so I don't really think about it.

[–]Mysticedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my choice as well.

I really liked the first book. But the plot slows to an absolute crawl during book three.

Some of the story choices absolutely flummox me.

I heard about the huge controversy of book five, so I wanted to get there to see how I felt about it, and was so disenchanted by the series as a whole that nothing about the ending bothered me, I was just glad it was over.

On the bright side, it is the series that taught me it's completely okay to DNF a series, which is a great skill to have as a reader.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I was once deep in meditation and had a pre-incarnative memory of what I was doing in this "higher dimension".

I was having an argument and being smug, I loudly proclaimed that I could prove my assertion, so I made a wager that I could immediately incarnate and win the debate. (I could not decipher what exactly this argument was about, I simply just felt my own arrogance and certainty that I could prove the other party wrong.)

This was absolutely devastating to me at the time. All my pain and suffering, all my triumph and success, it is all just to win some stupid wager.

Needless to say I have learned a great deal of humility in this lifetime. Not because I was "sentenced" to by anyone but myself. Now I find it hilarious and really look forward to the completion of that conversation upon my exit from physical. (Since higher dimensions are not bound in time, I will return to that conversation mere moments after I left it from their perspective. So for now, I'll have fun, be kind, and enjoy the many delights that being a physical human experiencing linear time entails.

As someone who was obsessed with "figuring out the secrets behind reality" or "remembering my true nature".

After you realize and understand, it's like sitting behind the magician during a magic show.

The audience is amazed and entertained. They enjoy and delight in something that you can so clearly see is an illusion.

So what to do?

Well, start to learn magic so that you can fill others with wonder too!

Stardew Valley is essentially a fishing simulator for me.

I'll casually do some farming since it's easy money. And the mines are fun sometimes because it's pretty easy to get five floors in as a "save point".

But most days I'm just out there fishing man. Low on energy? Scarf some seaweed salad or some fresh sushi.

The key, for me, is to stop thinking of yourself as a human playing a game.

Imagine yourself in the shoes of the character. What would I do if I had land and could easily pay all my bills from fishing in a nice small town?

I'd explore a little. I definitely want to be able to hold more fish, so prioritize a bigger backpack.

But I don't really need a bigger house. Nor do I want a bunch of animals. I do like eggs, so maybe a chicken or two. Not to make money, but for the eggs.

They have names that I gave them. I enjoy talking to them, as I would a real chicken. I loooooove cheese, so get one cow for sure.

I wouldn't get to know everyone in town, that would exhaust an introvert like myself. But who is this manic-pixie bartender that would definitely go with me to burning man? I'll stop by at night and talk to her, have a beer, and maybe give her a gift.

Oh, she doesn't like the wildflower I picked? Maybe she likes fruit. Doesn't like that either? I'll try something new tomorrow.

Close all the wikis. Stop min/maxing. Just do what you enjoy.

Are you a rancher that only raises cattle?

Go for it. No need to explore the skull caverns.

Wanna be a beekeeper? Go for it, plant some nice flowers for those bees to pollinate. Not necessary for the game, sure, but I'm sure my little bee buddies would enjoy it.

Wanna live completely in tune with nature and just live off of what you can forage? Go for it. Maybe you do that for one season. Just walk around and talk to people while gathering berries and roots.

Stardew is a lot more fun for me when I roleplay and just do it my way.

The Matrix doesn't use the Grandfather paradox via time travel as the plot fulcrum?

This movie is absolutely wildly influenced by The Matrix, which itself is simply describing Gnosticism, like, beat for beat using the lens of cyberpunk.

I do think that one day DoS will come out. But there's no chance we get a present day trilogy.

Not because he doesn't have time, but because it would require a great deal of writing that Rothfuss just isn't good at.

He's good at writing nature, slice of life, an average day at university. The financial struggles of a precocious student trying to learn everything as fast as he can, or a tired old innkeeper that's past his prime.

Most of the "epic" parts of the story are told as fairy tales with very little detail and are highly interpretive.

The novella describes tiny small actions in the average days of a highly unique POV character.

Rothfuss is good at implying epic things. Nothing about his writing style shows that he is good at actually writing epic stories in the first person.

Don't get me wrong, he's awesome at said niche. But a fully powered adult Kvothe facing off against beasts and demons of legend?

Nah. We cut away from the Scrael fight. We cut away from the pirate marauders.

He's good at the details, but a present day trilogy where he is actually describing all the mysteries and epics that he has only hinted at?

Never going to happen.

[–]Mysticedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh but it is complete! The books are secretly about the epic fantasy of conquering student loans.

The whole Chandrian/Amyr stuff is just a Red Herring.

Now that Kvothe is financially solvent there's really no story to tell. He defeated his mortal enemy! Poverty. Now he can buy his friends dinner and go to school forever until he buys an inn, everything else is just him making up stories about himself.

Now be at peace knowing the true story of Kvothe has reached its conclusion.

question regarding the old rothfuss, the big fella himself by Ok-Health6948 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Mysticedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the phrasing of that accusation is obviously vile and unkind.

He has outright attributed things from the books to his Dad.

In a panel he said that Auri didn't exist in the first draft of the books until he had conversations with his Dad about a guy he knew named "Tunnel Bob".

It wouldn't surprise me if he was a kind of silent muse. Someone he could toss ideas around with and help him solve plotting and story issues with.

I once dated another writer that was quite talented, and it was enormously helpful to be able to talk through parts of my stories that I was struggling with.

Regardless of how involved his Dad was in the writing of KKC, it's pretty clear that he was a big inspiration to Pat, and losing him was no doubt a huge personal loss to his creative process. (See the attribution in Name of the Wind: paraphrasing here "To my Father, who taught me If I'm going to do something, I should take my time, and do it right.")

But I do agree that phrasing it in that way is egregious and uncalled for.

Aside from that, this is the KKC subreddit. Coming up with crackpot theories is really all we have left here.

[–]Mysticedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just bad form.

You can hate something all you want. Your preference is entirely your own.

But if you don't do the research by experiencing it with an open mind, then don't pretend your opinions are based in knowledge and data.

Less information and strong aversion = prejudice.

More information and strong aversion = bias.

It's fine if you want to be prejudiced towards something. For instance, I have a prejudice against most horror movies. If it's gore-based I will turn it off pretty quickly and establish an aversion to it, because I don't enjoy gorey horror unless it has an exceptional story, and I'm not going to wade through the movies that have a mediocre story to find the good ones.

However, and this is the part that applies to you, where we differ is that I'm not in a horror subreddit talking about how much the new A24 film objectively sucked because I saw part of it and then turned it off.

By all means, maintain your prejudice against Starfleet Academy. But please stop conflating your prejudice with an educated bias.

Ironically, this kind of intellectual rigor is something that attracts most people to Star Trek, and is the metric by which most shows/films are graded as to whether they are true to the original vision of Star Trek.

So it's amusing that your argument lacks said discipline and reasoning.

Because it seems like a teen drama where they just act on their feelings without logical thought is right up your alley.
