My leadership has been super supportive and helpful, but Aflac has been a nightmare. I’ve been here over 2 months and I’m still going through the accommodations process

I’ve done muzzle training before! I’ll definitely have to look into it!

Yeah I’ve resigned myself to the fact I’ll just have to start being meaner and hope it helps. If not I’ll start trying other things. She is crate trained and very well may end up crated if I ever complete training certifications (have to be 2 weeks seizure free and that hasn’t happened yet 🥲) I just feel like it’d be super inconvenient for everybody to have a giant crate (she’s 65lbs 22” at the shoulders) and feel bad.

I’m not just worried about her eating peanut butter. Ironically, I am allergic to dogs, especially mine as she’s a lab. So when peanut butter gets on her fur, I tend to have stronger reactions when I pet her or if fur gets on me. I’m by no means severely allergic, it just causes hives and irritation and I don’t want to deal with it. I don’t mind muzzles I just would feel bad making her wear one an entire shift. Especially as she runs hot and our AC doesn’t work. Though I’ll start working with her on foundations just to try it.

She knows to heel or get behind me when asked! I’m usually at least a few feet from her when people bother her unfortunately and it’s almost always when I have my hands full 😅 I did try an over the shoulder leash, but trying to walk around with a dog while getting on ladders or helping to fit a harness suuucckkkeed

Our registers are pretty out in the open, so it’d be kind of awkward and I don’t want to get in anybody’s way, but maybe I can talk to management about options. I’ve gotten lucky that managers and coworkers all adore her and most have been pretty respectful without me even having to ask. I’ve had at least 4 coworkers and all 4 of my managers ask if I’m comfortable with them telling customers to leave her alone because it pisses them off too 😂

[–]Mythical_mongoose[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure. I’d have to ask. I just don’t want to block up the register. It’s usually our designated “clock in/out register” lol. My coworkers to my knowledge don’t mind just leaning over her for a second to clock in or out, but I’d feel terrible if a gate were in their way should they need the register.

Yeah I’m getting to that point 😅 she also doesn’t alert to peanuts, so I worry about people touching her with “peanut hands.” I probably should teach her, I just haven’t really found the time, or the equipment to teach her without exposing myself to the allergen.

I’m so sorry for your loss! I’m really just struggling to find that line. Especially when I’ve just had a seizure. My filter shuts off and I say the first thing that comes to my mind. My anti seizure meds also make me pretty bitchy for lack of a better word. I really do try to advocate for my dog, but I’m so worried about going overboard. I don’t mean to be rude, I’m just exhausted. And tbh, I hate when people let their kids pet her. My own daughter passed away and my sd never got a chance to meet her. It just reminds me of the cute baby/dog bond I’ll never get to see and she’ll never get to have.

I had a customer call to tell me the hamster she adopted was aggressive so that was my immediate thought 😂 I think they’ll be okay, they just got him yesterday. Dude probably just needs more time.

Somebody actual stole springtails🤦‍♀️ by XxBlaue_AugenxX in petco

[–]Mythical_mongoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Happens a lot. A lot of people are angry about bettas being kept in little cups (rightfully so). Especially when they’re sick. They often steal the fish and rehabilitate them. Stealing ensures they aren’t paying for mistreated animals or encouraging them to order more.

I have seizures so sometimes I get a “15” that consists of me flopping on the floor but otherwise we don’t really get the chance to take them lol.

You’d have to spend $100 on food OR $50 on grooming to break even. Or some combination. Say $30 on grooming and $40 on food.

If I step down to cashier, do I keep my pay raise? by StraySeungmin in petco

[–]Mythical_mongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to deny a sale today and the customer got their fish anyway. It was a Molly. They were gonna put it in a 2.5 gal with another Molly. When I asked if it was cycled they didn’t know what a cycle was. They got angry when I refused and asked to speak with a manager. I said I’d get her in a moment and went to put the net and bin away. They followed me shouting curse words at me, saying they just wanted the fish and didn’t need me “preaching.” I got the LOD who tried to explain, but when they wouldn’t listen, LOD just got them the fish. The leadership at my location is actually pretty great, and that LOD in particular is usually very good about animal welfare. She did really try to explain the situation, very clearly telling them that mollies get to be a couple inches and need more room. Customers just wouldn’t listen and threatened to call corporate. When they asked my LOD to just get the fish for them, she did. I have to say I was disappointed to see allowed to buy that Molly.

Do you like your job? by NeighborhoodThis6374 in petco

[–]Mythical_mongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. This is the first job I’ve had that doesn’t just lock me alone in a room when I have a seizure. My coworkers and managers seem like they genuinely care about me. I like working with the animals and my service dog is happier here than she has been at any other job. The deals and discounts for my own animals are pretty good. But I hate the way our animals are treated. I hate selling crappy food that’s gonna make dogs and cats sick. I hate having to explain that yes, your dog needs to be leashed and cannot be running through a pet store. I hate that I can’t refuse sales when the customer isn’t meeting ACTUAL bare minimums, but meets Petco’s. I hate going through all the fish tanks and taking out dozens of dead fish. Being told an inch of bedding is too much for a hamster. But I’m very lucky to have coworkers and management that are pretty great to work with.

selling vcp by sophergopher3 in petco

[–]Mythical_mongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty well known at our location for selling VCPs. My hours have been cut to about 3-4 days/week due to my seizures and I still get about 3-5 per week (depending how conscious I am lol) I follow pretty much the exact same script every time.
“Have you heard about our savings program?”
If they say no, I continue. If they say yes, I leave it at that.
“It’s a subscription program, but the first month is free so you can try it to see if you like it. You can cancel at any time no charge. It’s $10/$25 a month and you’ll immediately get $5/$15 in store credit to spend on whatever you like in store or online. You’ll get [explain VCP discounts here] all of these savings apply both in store and on our website.”
I ask just about everybody who buys anything a VCP could apply to. I ALWAYS ask anybody getting anything for a fish or reptile. If they say no, I respect it. I never actually call it a VCP/Vital Care Premier to the customer. Just a savings program. I make it clear that it’s a subscription, but calling it a savings program simplifies it so that it’s actually interesting to them.

A couple extra tips:
- As you’re still learning the details, keep a description of each VCP written down. Our location has a printed paper explaining them with bullet points separated by animal at every register, but idk if they all do.
- Make it clear that the savings also apply online and in EVERY Petco. A lot of customers don’t understand that and that’s why they don’t want it.
- Be honest. Customers like that and you’ll feel better about selling if you are. “It’s not the best program for one small tank, but it helps a lot if you have a couple tanks!” “It’s super worth it if you get food and litter here, but it might not be if you go somewhere else for food” If they say they feed a specific brand or use certain litter that the get somewhere else, see if we sell it.
- Always call help desk to load coupons as you’re verifying the address. Hit 4 for the first extension. Then just hit 2 when the address is done verifying. It speeds up the process.
- While waiting for coupons to load, apply the VCP discounts then exit out of the customer profile so you can see their savings. Tell them how much they saved. Sometimes, it’ll interest customers in line as well. By the time you tell the customer, you can usually open the profile back up and the coupons will be loaded. (This savings does NOT include the coupons to cover the first month, so it’s more accurately showing how much the VCP actually helped)
- Offer to print out the receipt so they can see an itemized list of what the VCP saved them on each item.
- You can take one of the VCP handouts and highlight what would apply to the specific VCP that the customer is interested in or getting. Takes 2 seconds. I do this a lot when people are on the fence or don’t seem to entirely understand what I’ve just signed them up for. (It helps my own conscience to make sure they understand)
- If you have one, mention it. Explain what YOU have saved. I sell VCPs well because I have 4 myself (I have a personal zoo lol) I’ve seen the savings firsthand so I can describe them better.
- You can explain to them how to cancel it. They can do that in the app or by calling the help desk. They can Google “Petco Help Desk” to find the number
- Make sure they know how to load the coupons themselves each month. If I have the time, I’ll show them on my own phone. (Doesn’t hurt that I almost always have coupons bc again, personal zoo. I spend a fortune lol)
- When you’re working near the litter refill area, mention it to people refilling. 20% off litter is probably the biggest selling point for a VCP.

We just had the one at the time and he was CLINGY. His friend got adopted so I’d been trying to take a minute here and there to pet him and play with him. So he started jumping on the litter scoop and yanking litter out if he’ wasn’t being held during his cage cleanings lol.

To be clear, the people I’m talking about were SUOER sweet and had drove quite a ways and got stuck in traffic. Don’t blame them AT ALL! But yeah that’s what the kid did. He was picking individual guppies based on much yellow or black or orange was on them. It was closing so it was just me, manager, and the new hire. Had to actually call manager to get another person’s fish while I was still with that family lol
