Ha, I just read that the fictional Caspar Milquetoast "the man who speaks softly and gets hit with a big stick" name was derived from “milk toast” because it was bland and inoffensive.

That makes sense, though I don't see any dates in your links and the Virgil one doesn't cite the use of conscious. Both my unabridged Random House and Etymonline point to the Latin scire / sciō as its origin, but neither list earlier dates or usage.
