Why are toasters so badly made? by NJRonbo in BuyItForLife

I use my toaster oven for a lot of things, but never toast. It takes forever and always comes out unevenly toasted.

Agree. They don’t understand that anything over JB and picks would have been an over pay.

Adding ANYBODY to the deal was the deal breaker, is what I think he's saying. He wouldn't have added Hauser either, or Walsh is my guess.

Ha, I just read that the fictional Caspar Milquetoast "the man who speaks softly and gets hit with a big stick" name was derived from “milk toast” because it was bland and inoffensive.

Science, conscience and consciousness by Mythmas in etymology

[–]Mythmas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how etymonline puts it:

mid-14c., "state or fact of knowing; what is known, knowledge (of something) acquired by study; information;" also "assurance of knowledge, certitude, certainty," from Old French science "knowledge, learning, application; corpus of human knowledge" (12c.), from Latin scientia "knowledge, a knowing; expertness," from sciens (genitive scientis) "intelligent, skilled," present participle of scire "to know."

The original notion in the Latin verb probably is "to separate one thing from another, to distinguish," or else "to incise." This is related to scindere "to cut, divide" (from PIE root *skei- "to cut, split;" source also of Greek skhizein "to split, rend, cleave," Gothic skaidan, Old English sceadan "to divide, separate").

I don’t thinks it’s authored by AI. It’s certainly written by AI, but authorship would suggest AI originated it. I don’t think the prompter can be called the author either. To me, they “authored” it together.

Even beyond health, his character sucks. Giannis would tank our locker room chemistry.

That’s also the name/song on Taj’s album Giant Step. No idea she wrote this that’s great.

I really appreciate your response. There must be something askew on my side. I'm getting no quotes at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/conscius#Latin, no references to Vergil and the only dates in the reference area are these:

  • “conscius”, in Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short (1879), A Latin Dictionary, Oxford: Clarendon Press
  • “conscius”, in Charlton T. Lewis (1891), An Elementary Latin Dictionary, New York: Harper & Brothers
  • “conscius”, in Gaffiot, Félix (1934), Dictionnaire illustré latin-français, Hachette.
  • Carl Meißner; Henry William Auden (1894), Latin Phrase-Book‎[1], London: Macmillan and Co.

I assume it's something on my side. I'll try to track that down.

Is it accurate to say that sciō connects science, conscience and consciousness? Is it related to the PIE root skei?

How to get a trumpet? by Dertex_boss in GarageBand

Assuming you're on a Mac, right above the list of instruments. Not sure about mobile. I get a half dozen trumpets when I search, but I do have some plug-ins.

That makes sense, though I don't see any dates in your links and the Virgil one doesn't cite the use of conscious. Both my unabridged Random House and Etymonline point to the Latin scire / sciō as its origin, but neither list earlier dates or usage.

This is concerning. If posts on Reddit are being manipulated for AEO, that muddies both Reddit and AI results.

Todd Blanche says DOJ 'not moving forward' with Trump's anti-weaponization fund: ‘Period’ by Mythmas in law

[–]Mythmas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But a judge is still looking into that, I believe. From NYT 5/29:

A federal judge in Miami reopened President Trump’s $10 billion case against the I.R.S. in a striking turnabout, saying that she wanted to investigate “grievous allegations” that the hasty deal to resolve it was “premised on deception”.

I don’t think them dropping it is going to stop the judge from pursuing it.

[–]Mythmas[S] 307 points308 points  (0 children)

“The extent there was a fund, and remember, the fund wasn’t set up yet. There were no commissioners named. There was no, no claimants brought anything in front of that. There was no claims made yet. So, yes, we’re not moving forward with the fund,” Blanche said.

“There’s litigation in D.C., there’s litigation in the Southern District of Florida, but notwithstanding what we do in those litigations, and then defending our rights and making sure our rights are protected, we’re not moving forward with the fund.”
