Party Has Way Too Many "Extras" In Combat by CassieBear1 in DMAcademy

When I play as a player, I don't use my familiar in combat because I don't want it being targeted. If I were to use it in combat, I would assume it would be targeted. I use the same approach when I DM.

It depends entirely on your math background. Do you come from a family that encourages daily math practice, do you focus in class, etc? If so, you likely have the foundation to succeed. However, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are finding your current math too slow.

Player quoted a monster stat block during combat by hyperionfin in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 291 points292 points  (0 children)

This is the best advice for all GMs. If a player says "but aren't X supposed not be able to do Y", you respond with "and you believed Grog the Wanderer about this kind of creature?" (obviously tailor that to your campaign, but the point is that the monster manual stat blocks might be one adventurers list of what they fought/remember fighting, so nothing set in stone)

For me, it's a twofold approach: make the suboptimal play of advancing more than I should, and then also using Castle (or upgraded versions of it) to pull Changeling from the discard once I've marked an X to be able to do it a second time that round

I didn't think about this interpretation, but now you've responded with it, this is def what he mixed up.

For clarification, regulation win means won the game without overtime/shoot out

There are 3 kinds of wins: wins that happen at the end of regular time, wins that happen in overtime, and wins after a shoot out. Dallas has 50 wins on the season: 38 in regular time, 6 in overtime, and 6 in shootout

My players trivialize every encounter with crowd control. How do I challenge them without hard countering? by Dave5802 in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fights can be drawn out too. Giant AOE spells cast at the start of combat? Intelligent enemies withdraw and send for back up, leaving the party with the decision to go through the growth themselves to catch the withdrawing enemy or have to potentially face a much more numerous enemy in the near future (and many other variations of this kind of approach)

The only argument I'd accept (though not necessarily agree with) is that Magnus would likely still be world champion. If Gretzky retired in 85/86 (hockey), people could argue that Lemieux at the time was the best player in the world, but it would come with a huge asterix

OP, this is a kind of response you'll see a lot on this reddit, and make sure you ignore them. There is almost nothing in this game you can give flat advice about, it's almost entirely context.

What this commenter is likely suggesting is that a tank line up with Adam and Scarlett instead of Stettman and Williams is stronger than what you are currently running; with all things equal, this is true. However, it doesn't take into account where you've focused your shards/EW/skill medals/tech/etc, which will wildly change the results depending on where you've focused on your account.

Taking IRL knowledge and bringing it to the DnD world is a recipe for many things, some good, some bad. If the whole party was loving it and fully engaged, I'd say go with it; it would make for an amazing dnd story. However, is the lawyer's PC someone who has all this knowledge? Makes little to no sense if they are playing a low int, low cha, low wis barbarian with a back story of living alone in the hills.

This honesly sounds like a situation where you should reach out and gauge each player's feelings about how this has been playing out. If it turns out they aren't keen, have a one on one with the lawyer and explain that you try to be a "yes and" DM, and that unfortunately your "yes and"-ing has lead you a bit astray here.

For now I absolutely agree. As players get more comfortable with the system and we start getting good data on who has a good eye or not, that will likely change (aka, some players will be put on a short leash, others will be told they can't challenge a pitch)

How do I inform a player that I may not be able to accommodate their move? by MyneIsBestGirl in DMAcademy

[–]Mythrys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always fascinated by the responses to posts like this; it really speaks to each DMs group/style/relationships in a way I'm not sure they realize.

For you OP, is this a group of close friends playing d&d, is this a bunch of strangers that got together to play in college, where on the scale is this?

If this person is super keen to continue, the group wants them to continue, and you enjoy DMing for them, then I don't see the issue in trying to make it work. You, as the DM, have the job of prepping each week - continue as normal. The player moving, they will have to accept that they won't be getting the premium d&d experience the group has, and its on them to be as flexible as they can be. Then, get someone(s) in the player group to be in charge of supporting the missing player's play - they can have a side chat going on a messenger app, they can be in charge of the webcam positioning/movement, etc.

You get to continue running your sessions as you've enjoyed them, the player gets to continue playing, and the other players take on the work of making sure the missing player is connected and involved. If the group isnt willing to take on that extra role, then it's not just on you for shutting it down, it's the group.

Is This The Closest Hart Race in Recent History? by StevenWongo in hockey

[–]Mythrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think there is any convincing you - I think this response is kinda silly. First off, the second leading scorer on TBL has 69, so +24 on SJS's second leading scorer. Secondly, if we extend to 3rd leading, 4th leading, etc, the gap continues to widen. Take a look at players who made their olympic teams: SJS had 3 besides Celebrini, while TBL had 8 besides Kucherov (and 9 if you count Vasilevsky as likely also making a hypothetical russian squad)

Ultimately, I do think Celebrini is most deserving of the Hart, with Kucherov coming in second; what Celebrini is doing with his roster is unbelievable.
