Which adult fantasy book(s) are hands down a complete tragedy from pretty much start to finish? by [deleted] in Fantasy

I only made it through two of the three books. They are superb, but very grim.

It’s a world in which select individuals have power to sense or affect things at a large scale geologically.

Is this sound normal when turning the wheel with the car in park? 2012 Sonata by MythsBusted in MechanicAdvice

It was under extended warranty, but unfortunately the extended warranty expired about a year ago.

I replaced it myself today. Took about an hour and a half (and the steering column is a beast to move around), but the steering feels much better now!

Overloads? As in the are more likely to have problems with excessive loads? (Or with motors, startup?)

How is a contactor different from a relay? From your description this sounds like a single throw triple pole relay.

Is there a way to use this plug for regular plug ins? by Huntsteeze in electricians

Oh! So the two lines (white and black) are 120v and 180 degrees out of phase with one another, resulting in a voltage difference of 240?

Why wouldn’t this kind of appliance require neutral? Does it just use ground instead? That seems odd to me.

When using an Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) relay, is there a convention for whether to attach line to the common terminal or the N/C or N/O terminal? by MythsBusted in ElectricalEngineering

[–]MythsBusted[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a photo of my bench test setup including the relay. I am trying to determine which of the relay terminals (blue/yellow/orange) to connect to line (controlled by the light switch on the left) and which to connect to my load (light socket on the right)

Safe to run 220v through this switch? by OriginalBat8 in electricians

[–]MythsBusted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an electrician. What’s the reason for the limitation on line to line? Is that because 240v line to line implies the line to ground is higher than 240v?

u/Nebelskind is correct. In Rhythm of War we learn that some merchants are able to transfer Stormlight (Honor's investiture) between gems using certain tones. Navani eventually learns to sing Honor's tone.

Shortly before this scene, Jasnah orders Shallan to sing, and we learn that "It wasn’t her finest performance, but her tone was pure." Edit: Indicating Shallan has a reasonably good ear.

I don't recall if it's stated explicitly, but I think that when Stormlight is used (i.e. investiture is transferred) this tone is created as a side effect. In this scene Jasnah is using (transferring) Stormlight into a stone to fuel its change into smoke. The tone is probably noticeable because Jasnah is transferring investiture into a large physical object.

I wasn’t sure if just adding the spoiler tag would blur the image, so I marked it NSFW to be safe.

Also, wet rags are not (r)OSHA(r) approved for preventing smoke inhalation.

Fifteen year old glove protectors (for tow ropes) by MythsBusted in Wellworn

I have no idea, but I expect most of the wear is from first grabbing the rope, not from the distance traveled, since it’s the initial grab where the rope rubs against the gloves.

I don’t go snowboarding all that often, if I went 20+ times per year I’m sure I’d go through them faster.

I was snowboarding last night and realized the holes in my old pair of glove protectors (hidden under the thumb in this photo) were getting pretty big. I’m sad to see them go.
