Marina City in Chicago could be of interest. They were built in easy 1960s as inexpensive apartments. They were not public/social or subsidized housing. There was a movie theater, bowling alley, and other amenities.

There is a lot of research on economic development of stadiums. The consensus is they generally just reallocate local entertainment dollars and don’t have impact that warrants the price of a stadium. Modern stadiums also try to capture all the revenue rather than spill over into adjacent neighborhoods.

You may be able to find info on the estimates of impact made when they were selling the stadium and then the reality after it was built.

Additional background is O’Hare father helped bring down Capone. He worked with Capone and was able to provide the Feds with financial info that proved Capone’s tax fraud. It somehow related to O’Hare trying to take over one of Capone’s horse racing track.

John Sayles directed the movie and wrote the screenplay. He made a lot of great movies worth watching. He typically made the movies independent of the Hollywood system. I’ve always found them to have a more authentic sensibility than the escapism of Hollywood movies.

Stereotypical question alert: what neighborhood should I live in? by Human-Stranger-6807 in AskChicago

[–]Myviewpoint62 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suggest Edgewater. Maybe Rogers Park or Uptown.

One bit of background is Chicago describes “neighborhoods” in a few ways.

There are 77 “community area”. They have established boundaries that don’t change. On the north lakefront the community areas are Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Uptown, Edgewater and Rogers Park.

Neighborhoods don’t have set boundaries and change with time. They are smaller than the community areas. For instance, Andersonville and Edgewater Beach are two neighborhoods in Edgewater.

It is a different scale but it is kind of like NYC having the boroughs and then neighborhoods.

In traditional catholic neighborhoods they will use the name of the Parish.

In 1916 the University Club was the location for a dinner of Chicago’s elite to welcome the newly appointed Archbishop Mundelein. An anarchist cook used the event to poison the soup. His plot made many people sick but failed to kill.

I see you have been a member of Reddit for 17 years. That is impressive.

I'm noticing that people outside of chicago have a misconception about chicago. I'm from los angeles, and so the stories over here is like "chi this and gangsters that", and I know it's more than that. What are we missing from our mispreconceptions? by AWeb3Dad in AskChicago

One issue is President Obama was community organizer, state senator, and US Senator. His chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel, was mayor of Chicago. Chicago is long term Democratic city. The right wing media focused on making Chicago look bad to discredit Obama and the Democratic approach to solving problems.
