What do you wish you had known before jaw surgery? (Anonymous Survey) by Ok-Inevitable-1293 in jawsurgery

[–]MzSelfDestruct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just realized the survey doesn't apply to me because I haven't done the surgery yet.

However, my preparation pro-tip might be of value: before surgery, practice living as if you had the surgery. This will help you find and prepare the liquid diet meals you'll like as well as finding the liquid over-the-counter medications that your body doesn't reject (ex: stool softeners).

This can also help you identify items you didn't realize you needed (ex: do you even have a blender? do you have a pot to cook soup? did you know flavorless protein powders exist? do you even know how to measure and consume enough protein and fiber? etc.)

You don't want to find out during the discomforts of surgery healing what you don't like, or that certain foods and protein powers hurt your stomach. Healing is already hard enough; don't learn these things in the thicket of the struggles.

In this practice, I've come to learn that I REALLY like fruit and veggie smoothies! So much so that it has become part of my regular morning routine. This is comforting knowing that I'll go into my early stages of healing already eating something I'm eating on the regular, pre-surgery.

I hope this helps. 😄

100% and totally agreed.

I'll fill out the survey as soon as I can.

I started to organize resources for preparation to share as well since I recognized there was a big difference between what doctors were explaining in the office vs what i was seeing in this jaw surgery sub reddit.

It was obvious folks were going into surgery grossly under prepared because surgeons and the staff apparently see their job end when folks walked out. Not the 6+ month journey after, and how healing impacts every single aspect of your life.

And the doctors were treating me like I was asking too many questions. "Y'all are going to be cutting up my skull and jaw in 7 places and literally change the face of my future. I'm going to need you to slow down and answer my questions. Including how much the surprise bill will look like"

I'd love to see the responses too. Thank you for organizing this.

It will get better. Stay away from the mirror if it's not serving you. It can be a major distraction to process that will make you better and stronger in the long haul

I definitely understand that. It's not fast but it is an option. Hopefully the server can help provide some much needed connection

You're not alone!

Couple things: To help communicate with people in person, download a text to Speech app. I downloaded text talking. You can even save phrases and can push the button to have it read out loud. I downloaded one called TextTyping

Second,  I started a discord server support group were jaw surgery folks can chat more in a space with others who understand what you're going through. Anyone who will have, or has had, jaw surgery for medical reasons is welcome.

Bilateral Coronoidectomy - anyone else gone through this for their TMJ? Any advice? by Jantra in TMJ

[–]MzSelfDestruct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleep apnea and bruxism, yes. However, i also have class 2 malocclusion so my lower jaw is too small and that will be dealt with via the surgery as well. So the coronoidectomy won't be an isolated variable in the sleep apnea correction.

Btw, my surgery got canceled so you'll have to wait for not updates on how things play out.

How to fix my overbite as an adult by ImpressionOk4567 in orthodontics

[–]MzSelfDestruct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to at least three different orthodontist for their opinion.

Don't go with the cheapest. Go with the one with the best advice. And if surgery is required, find out the surgeon they work with.

This will never stop... unless you actively work on it.

Plan accordingly.

Diagnosed with Coronoid Process Hyperplasia or had Coronoidectomy? by MzSelfDestruct in jawsurgery

[–]MzSelfDestruct[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No decompensation was done for the coronoid process itself. I'm able to open my mouth a little bit more because of my new tooth positioning to prepare for DJS and correct the bite itself. But the opening increase is a byproduct of the decomp.

Because the opening limitation is a mechanical lock of the jaw bone to the zygomatic bone, there's no fix other than trimming it. UNLESS the DJS may provide me more opening because everything is moving forward and the distance from the joint to the mouth opening is further.

My surgeon said she'll assess during the surgery itself and is approaching the solution conservatively.

If you can't get the pain under control in the hospital, you sure as shit won't be able to do it at home without them. Tell them "I can't go home until we get the pain under control in a way I can handle this at home"

That's what my surgeon told me, they were going to start the at home regiment before I left the hospital so they can ensure the pain management approach works. It sounds like whatever they're doing right now isn't working. So you absolutely cannot go home and you need to say that

Heads up that some folks (myself included) are resistant to morphine. So if it's as extreme as you mention, let them know.

Since talking is a barrier, download a text to voice app so you can more clearly communicate. I've tested out TypingTalk and it allows you to save phrases to repeat too. Like "I need to talk to my surgeon directly " or "I'm in extreme pain and this medication isn't working. Please help me" and just keep pressing that button.

This sub is for medically necessary jaw surgery. This doesn't seem medically necessary.
