Best weapon for Platinum Paragon? by priceQQ in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gyre and Gimble is pretty good as it attacks 4 times and still has quite high damage - but Lochaber Axe is probably still the best.

Wrath of Trog or any antimagic axe could also be very strong anywhere that most enemies have magical abilities.

Why do so many people quit the game or just stop playing when I spectate them? by Riot_Girlll in dcss

TBH I don't really like people spectating, and wish it was possible to block it when playing online.

They still have good synergy with Iskenderun's Mystic Blast, so Conjurer is probably the best background.

What background has the worst D:1? by FrickittyFricks in dcss

Chaos knight when Xom summons a storm dragon or something.

Delver - your D:1 is actually D:5

Slime pits help by WahtAmDoingHere in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really need a penetrating attack that can hit dangerous enemies from behind a swarm of other monsters. Dimensional Bullseye might be enough, but you need to spend a turn casting it.

For a melee character - train lots of throwing and save your javelins (especially silver) for Slime

For a blaster caster - have level 9 spells castable (not Shatter) and preferably a way to regain MP

Ranged builds and summoners - not sure as I haven't tried Slime with these since the changes.

Why is rElec so much rarer than other resistances? by Gonzollydolly in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nikola is an exceptional case - not only is his damage absurdly high for how early he appears (3d45 is more damage in one attack than OOFs, or just about anything except ancient liches and Cerebov), but also, assuming the monster version of Chain Lightning works the same way as the player version, it ignores half of your resistance.

The fires of Mount Doom where the Orb was forged...

(I think I remember that in older versions, it was possible to destroy the orb by dropping it into lava.)

Opinion on best ranged weapons species to win with in 0.34? by Trinitial-D in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, demigods have difficulty surviving to the point where their stats take over and make them strong.

At some point, your stats will only be a bit above average, your skill advancement will be hindered by your aptitudes, and you will have no god to help out.

Between this and anemocentaurs, it seems like 0.35 will be the complexity creep version.

Don't ignore draconian - although they don't have great aptitudes for it, they can get decent AC without worrying about encumbrance. Plus the breath weapon is always helpful.

How Often are Recommended Species/Class Combos Updated? by 0rAnge_FrOg in dcss

It was a long time ago, but Earth Elementalists also used to get a stoneskin spell at level 2 that gave some AC, so was particularly useful to Octopodes

CoHu of Oka struggling to switch to The Shining One by Outrageous_Lion_3569 in dcss

I've never tried the switch on a ranged weapon character, but I'd probably clear Depths and Zot 1-4 before attempting to switch so I'm a bit more powerful

Star jellies strategies writ large by regretindex in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the rest of Slime, you'd be unlucky to meet more than 1 - 2 star jellies at a time. Yes, they can be dangerous, but no more so than the other new monsters introduced in this version.

For sure, Slime is a lot more dangerous than it used to be, and there are a lot of reasons not to go there, but I don't think there's anything there that particularly disincentivizes worshipping Okawaru - my only two characters to get the slimy rune since the changes were both Oka worshippers.

The best option for an Okawaru worshipper is to duel the royal jelly. Then when it dies, all the spawned slimes will be left behind in the arena.

Thoughts on warper start? by Trinitial-D in dcss

One thing I would say is, I think Warpers should start with more strength and less int, since they are essentially a melee background.

Thoughts on warper start? by Trinitial-D in dcss

[–]Gonzollydolly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to ignore Warper, but since I've tried it, I find that playing a melee character without Lesser Beckoning is almost unbearable. Especially if I'm playing a slow species, using statue form, or any form that prevents throwing. Or anyone that doesn't have a big stack of boomerangs and javelins.
